We all know that the next couple of days will be filled with holiday excess. So why not plan to do something noble next week to compensate?

As part of Kimpton’s Red Ribbon Campaign for HIV/AIDS Awareness, a $10 donation will cover your entrance and one drink ticket to their Red Hot Night on Tuesday, December 1. Extra drink tickets are $5 each, with a silent auction featuring a weekend getaway to a Kimpton hotel, airfare included.

At Hotel Rouge from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, all proceeds will go to the Whitman-Walker Clinic. Of course there will be red-themed specialty drinks like the Cordon Rouge – Absolut Ruby Red, grapefruit juice and passion fruit puree – but the best part is helping raise money in the fight against DC’s HIV/AIDS epidemic.

RSVP to the Whitman-Walker Clinic at 202.797.3543.

$4325 for schools ‘donated’ by 27 HOV violators

‘Lonely’

WaPo reports today that the Virginia state police handed out 27 HOV tickets during a crackdown initiative on Thursday, including one $1,000 fourth-time offender citation. If you’re the gambling sort be aware, the fines are based on number of violations in the preceding five years. First time, $150, second time $250. Then $500 then $1000.  If it makes you feel any better the money goes into the State Literary Fund, which, according to the article “provides money for schools.”

Interestingly, it’s a little more involved that that. The Literary Fund is mandated by the Virginia constitution and sets a low-water mark for it – 80 million – and anything above that can be disbursed by the General Assembly for various school purposes. The amount below that is controlled exclusively by the Board of Education, subject to the limitations of law that have been set up over the years. The BoE can make loans and investments with it, but Virginia isn’t obligated to back those loans up with anything beyond what’s in the fund.

The BoE seems to be cautious with how they make those loans; the list of what’s been lent out and what’s on the back burner can be found here and there’s a lot more things deferred than paid out. Also interesting, at least to a gadget nerd like me, is one of the limitations on what a borrower can use these funds for: no “Loose technology equipment” but “Technology infrastructure and built-in equipment” is okay. I wonder if this is why these somewhat silly “electronic classrooms” that have become in vogue over the years are so common – is there a funding disparity for stuff based on whether you screw it into a rack in the closet or not?

If you work out in Tysons Corner, your lunch options have just expanded.  Starting today, two free lunchtime shuttles will be circulating through the area every 10 minutes.  Every weekday from 10 AM to 2:30 PM, Tysons Connector buses will connect Tysons Corner Center, Tysons Galleria, and various employers in the area (check out the PDF map of the routes).  In such a car-dependent and pedestrian-unfriendly place as Tysons is today, the Tysons Connector is a welcome addition.  Finally, a good way to try out a new lunch place down the block without having to get in your car!

I can’t remember prohibition.  My grandfather can barely remember prohibition.  But that doesn’t mean that the anniversary of its repeal is bad excuse to drink.  The 76th (thanks Nicole) anniversary of the 21st Amendment is less than two weeks away and DC’s Craft Bartender’s Guild is celebrating in style.  They are hosting the Repeal Day Ball on Dec. 5 at PS7 in Chinatown.  Tickets are available to the public at $100 a pop, which gets you in the door and lots of booze.  If you’re really interested in DC’s bartending scene, you can throw down an extra $50 for VIP tickets, which gets exclusive demonstrations by DC’s best and a chance to meet your favorite mixologists. Tickets are available here.

Escape Routes for Wednesday

‘Traffic’

By the time Wednesday afternoon rolls around, you’ll probably be ready to head home for Thanksgiving, just like most other DC-area residents.  While we’re all hoping that traffic is flowing as smoothly as in the image above, chances are you’ll be stuck in some congestion along the way.  Luckily, the Washington Post has a list of back-up routes to help you avoid the backups on I-95 and I-66.  Some tips: consider an alternative route to avoid the great hated state of Delaware (from the article: “So much driver anger against such a small state!”), take the scenic route to avoid I-66 traffic, and most of all, just stagger your travel times.   Consider coming back to town on Saturday if possible to avoid Sunday traffic– plus, you’ll get out of one more day of forced family time!

Rhee’s next public kerfuffle

Michelle_Rhee

WaPo’s DC Wire blog has an item that we’re likely going to hear more about in short order: the LA Times has gotten their hands on a congressional report about the firing of Inspector General Gerald Walpin in June. In it is information about conversations Michelle Rhee had with Walpin last year about Kevin Johnson, who she got engaged to very recently.

The LA Times item leads with the fact that Rhee vouched for Johnson as a “good guy,” but that doesn’t seem likely to burn her much unless she was romantically involved with him at the time and didn’t disclose it. I’d hope my darling wife would speak at least a little positively about me if asked; if the person she’s talking to doesn’t take that connection into account then that’s their bad judgment, not hers.

What seems like a more curious bit is down at the bottom, when it discusses the history of Johnson’s problems with allegations of inappropriate behavior with two volunteers and one student at his charter school, St. Hope Academy. The LA Times says that the report mentions Rhee intervening with a teacher at St Hope who would leave “a few months later,” according to the LA Times, in June 2007.

It’s not all that odd, though, since that timeline puts the interaction before she was identified as our new chancellor on July 12th. At that time Rhee would still have been CEO and President of the organization she started and ran before coming here, The New Teacher Project. The LA Times also doesn’t mention that at that time Rhee was on the St Hope board of directors, making it reasonable for her to be involved in things happening at the school.

The only actual oddity I found was that St Hope’s announcement of Rhee’s coming to DC indicated she would continue to serve on the board. She clearly left – she’s not listed on the 2009-2010 form – but she either resigned very quickly or they jerked up their record-keeping. Her name is not listed on their IRS form 990, which requires listing the names of everyone who who served as a board member for any amount of time between Jul 1 2007 through Jun 30 2008. She does appear on the 2006 form.

I’d say the only issue for Rhee is whether it turns out she’s associating with questionable people, or to be more precise, planning on marrying him. There’s some interesting material in these resignation letters from board members who left St Hope earlier this year, and at least one doesn’t paint a positive picture of Johnson.

“DJ Zimm” To Host DeAngelo Hall’s Birthday Party? Yeah, That’s Happening.

Attention all DC sports fans — Ryan Zimmerman is officially the coolest Washington National. Why? He’s hosting/MC-ing Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall’s birthday party at the Shadowroom.

How did this pairing come about? No one’s sure at this point. What we do know is that it’s happening.

An anonymous source for the National Enquirer said Zimmerman might be “doing magic tricks and making balloon animals for the kids,” but really … who in the heck made the final decision in naming the Golden Glover/Silver Slugger/All-Star the host of a party?

I mean, COME ON folks! We’ve all seen his interviews. Can he play ball? Yes siree. But can he host a party? I guess we’ll find that answer sooner than we thought.

National Parks Not National Parties

Today’s Georgetown Metropolitan covered the growing incidence of kids’ parties staged at Montrose Park, part of Rock Creek National Park,  in Northwest DC.

Apparently, some of these parties have gotten “a little crazy” with parents trucking in pony rides, miniature petting zoos and moon bounces.

From the GM article, it appears the parties aren’t causing the neighborhood any trouble, but word seems to spreading, so my suggestion to neighborhood parents is to stick with the classic pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and pinata. You can’t go wrong with those classics.

One person was left dead this morning after the tour bus for 16-year-old pop star Miley Cyrus overturned on I-85, 30 miles south of Richmond. Cyrus was not on board.

Her black-and-maroon luxury tour bus hit the concrete at around 8:15 a.m. after skidding several hundred feet, according to Virginia State Police. The bus was on its way to Greensboro, N.C. for the next stop on the 2009/2010 “Wonder World Tour” when the  accident occurred.

Members of the Cyrus production crew were on board but only one of the nine were injured. No further personal information regarding the individuals involved in the accident have been revealed by police.

Cyrus is still scheduled to perform on Sunday in Greensboro.

Amanda Palmer at the State Theater

Amanda Palmer at State-0736, courtesy of Me

I had the good fortune to get to see and shoot Amanda Palmer last night.

Let me clarify – shoot as in take pictures of her. I am not the person Who Killed Amanda Palmer?

Let me also save you Gaiman-heads the trouble: No, he was either not there or not in evidence. Palmer’s dad was, however – he lives in the area and sings with the National Cathedral, according to the now-defunct Blade. Palmer did a duet of a Leonard Cohen song with him during the encore, something that’s become a tradition when she plays in the area.

The show was great and I’m becoming more and more fond of the State Theater as a venue. The management is relaxed and courteous, the sound’s good and the on-tap beer selection above average. More pictures after the jump.

Not the kind of coverage he really needed, mind you, but some more facts about the naked dude in Arlington I told you about Wednesday. Washington Post’s crime blog has additional delightful facts, like the fact that the stolen car he was found in by police? His ex-girlfriend was the one who’d reported it stolen several days prior.

WaPo’s writers seemed surprised she’d still want it back after the Naked Man incident, but really, you can do wonders with Febreze.

You may have seen them before at the farmers market in Centreville or Reston, or at area wineries and events. I’ve not yet but love the concept, and a Washington Post review of their food makes my mouth water.

If you’re a fan, watch them tomorrow, then vote for them.

Boy oh boy did DC get her share of nature’s greatest light show last night.

If you didn’t see it, you might’ve been sleeping. But if you didn’t hear it, then I’m jealous because I’m a light sleeper and you’re not.

This November weather rarity was explained by NBC4 Meteorologist Tom Kierien: a front from the Midwest picked up speed while moving through the mid-Atlantic region, generating isolated thunderstorms with frequent lightening. This is odd during the post-spring/summer months due to cool temperatures, but somehow the airspace above our fair city provided enough lift to create the rainy show we were treated to on Thursday night.

Sounds good to me. I mean, it could be worse: below 30 and snowing! (Knock on wood.)

I’m all about enjoying a good alcoholic beverage, playing games and being environmentally responsible, so when VAT19 gave me the option to embody these principles in one amazing product, I jumped on it.

This set of  Reusable “Plastic” Cups allows us drinking game players to play pong, flip cup, beer die, etc. to our hearts content, all while knowing we’re saving local landfills from hundred of the classic, red Solo cups.

And no, users of these cups will not throw out these melamine, dishwasher safe cup; they’re much more substantial then the cheap, plastic version.

Crumbs Comes to DC!

Crumbs, the delicious NY cupcake shop, is expanding to DC! “The D.C. market was the next logical choice for our expansion,” said Jason Bauer, CRUMBS CEO and co-founder. “The CRUMBS brand has strong name recognition in the market and we decided to listen to our fans who have been asking us for many months to come to D.C.”

True, DC has lots of cupcake shops. But personally, I am stoked about the arrival of Crumbs in March 2010. Their cupcakes are huge, first of all, and they also come up with some creative flavors and decorations. Check out Orange You a Chocolate Lover— cute, right? Bring on the happy.

(Emphasis on SHOULD, reality is I probably never will. Let’s pretend it’s endearing.) So anyways, point is, today, I eat my words. And my words taste like truffles. Continue reading

Swinging near the ballpark. Trapeze, that is.

The Trapeze School of New York has been offering classes on the site of the old convention center at NW Hand 9th for about four months now but that time is going draw to a close. It’s always been intended to be a short term deal, though the classes running though the end of the month make it six months of operation, not the four the Washington Post originally reported.

It seems a more long-term home is on the horizon for TSNY, whose class schedule lists them as “closed for construction” at the end of the month and with a promise to open in 2010. They haven’t yet returned my call to confirm, but its almost certain that they’re the unnamed trapeze school named in a recent zoning board decision allowing a trapeze school “which must relocate from its present site” to set up in the area right next to Nationals Stadium.

The city calls the area the “Southeast Federal Center Overlay district” which is pretty lofty-sounding for an eight block area. You can look at Google maps’ sat view here – it’s the area below M between the Navy Yard and 1st SE. I’m not sure how gung-ho I’d be about swinging through the air at high speed in January but I’m all in favor of something more interesting in that area than parking lots and big holes in the ground.

History buffs take note — there’s a new, interactive Web site being launched in honor of the 146th anniversary of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

This multimedia expansion of the pristine marble temple was launched today by the National Park Service. The site includes videos, panoramas and oral testimonials from the park rangers who have worked at the memorial for decades, according WTOP.

If this catches on as a web trend, similar sites may be launched in the coming months. The nonprofit Trust for the National Mall is currently raising money to build the sites for other Washington memorials.

The site should be viewed with a high-speed connection. Still having trouble viewing the site? NPS recommends downloading the latest version of FlashPlayer.

2009 White House Christmas Ornament Poll: Naughty or Nice?

2009 Grover Cleveland White House Christmas Ornament

2009 Grover Cleveland White House Christmas Ornament

The 2009 White House Christmas ornament is upon us and this year’s edition celebrates the presidency of Grover Cleveland. Cleveland, the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms, was the president from 1885-1889 and 1893-1897. He was also the first president to have electric lights on the White House Christmas tree.

The front of the (deep breathe) 2009 Grover Cleveland White House Christmas Ornament depicts a view of the South lawn and The White House on a winter night. A lit Christmas tree and holiday decorations in the Oval Room can be seen through a window. On the back, the ornament shows one of many famous Cleveland family Christmas parties.

What do you think of this year’s White House ornament?
