Boil Order for Shepherd Park

shepherdparkboil.png
click for Google Map

WASA has put out the alert that residents in Shepherd Park should be boiling their water before using it:

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC WASA) is issuing a precautionary boil water/bottled water advisory for a portion of Northwest DC, affecting approximately 750 buildings.

DC WASA experienced a loss of pressure around 12:00 noon on Monday, December 07, 2009. This resulted in a drop of water pressure in the vicinity of 16th Street and Georgia Avenue, NW. A smaller neighborhood may have lost water pressure entirely, which could present a water quality problem.

WASA does not believe there to be contamination, and this is a safety precaution until they can safely test & flush the system. If you have questions, or are near the affected region, you can call WASA to confirm at 202-612-3440.

Metro: People Are Actually Using Their Farecards!

This should shock precisely no one, but WMATA is expressing some concern that riders are actually using their farecards until they’re empty. WMATA was hoping to use the $11M in unused fare-dollars for other budgetary purposes next year, but the rise in SmarTrip card usage (upwards of 70% on rail and 60% bus, now!), and the recession that has people keeping their farecards and reloading them, even when they have less than a fare on them. Metro had been tapping up to 5% of fares as a slush fund of sorts useful for paying small deficits, but with fewer farecards in use, their accountants are recommending only 3% of fares be used in that manner.

There are internal proposals at Metro to raise fares up to 15% to cover the budget gap.

Cocaine Smuggled Inside A Chicken at Dulles

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

Drugs get smuggled in and out of this country just as often as teeny boppers buy Jonas Brothers records. So why did Wagner Mauricio Linares Aragon, 32 of Guatemala, think it was a good idea to smuggle close to $4,3000 worth of cocaine inside of a carry-out chicken at Dulles International Airport? My best guess is that it hasn’t been done before (as far as federal/local authorities know).

Aragon was found carrying 2.3 ounces of cocaine inside his carry-on chicken during a second inspection by Customs and Border Protection early Sunday morning according to officials.

“Officers have seen many unique narcotics concealment methods, and they all present the same challenges to discover them,” Christopher Hess, director of the agency’s Port of Washington, told the Washington Times.

Aragon and his smuggled stash was turned into the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. So a word to the wise — don’t smuggle your illegal narcotics inside a cooked chicken. You WILL get caught.

Polls: Gray > Fenty

‘DSC_0131’

It’s hard to poll for mayor when there’s only one candidate. It’s just Mayor Fenty who’s tossed a hat into the ring for the mayorship. However, that’s not stopping people from paying pollsters to make phonecalls. The AFL-CIO polled 500 likely voters and pitted Mayor Fenty against three imaginary rivals: Kwame Brown, Vincent Gray and Michael Brown.

The results? Well, for imaginary opponents, Mr. Mayor isn’t doing as well as he’d probably like. Against Council Chair Gray, he’d lose 43%-39%. Against Kwame Brown, he’d edge out a victory, 42%-40%. Against Michael Brown, another win, 44%-37%. It’s hard to compete with candidates that don’t exist, because their flaws can’t be pinned down or addressed. SO, they have that going for them, but it’s not easy to be a mayor whose whole purpose in life seems to be to spin up the Council, so, I’d say these poll results are pretty solid.

Sen. Corker’s Daughter Carjacked Near Verizon Center

Tennessee Senator Bob Corker’s oldest daughter Julia, 22, got carjacked last night at the corner of D and 7th Streets NW (near the Verizon Center) by two attackers. One of the men stopped to ask Corker where Gallery Place was while the other opened her driver’s side door, pulled her out of the vehicle, choked her, and threw her to the ground where she then lost consciousness.

She awoke from her brief stint of a black out only to find the attackers driving away in her SUV. Lucky for Corker, her SUV was equipped with OnStar and police were able to track the men down and arrest them.

Corker was not seroiusly injured in the attack.

Ride With Style: New DC Sports Vanity Plates Are In-The-Works

Want to drive with pride while donning your favorite team’s colors with a new vanity license plate? You could be soon thanks to council members Kwame R. Brown (D-At Large) and Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) who announced their plan to create plates for the Redskins, Wizards, United, Capitals and Mystics on Tuesday.

All plates would still say “Taxation without representation”, but at least now you can add a unique touch to the front and rear of your daily ride.

Extra fees would include a one-time payment of $25 for the plate and a $20 biennial renewal.

The only question I have is: What about those Nationals? They need some love too!

You can catch entire ceremony from the warmth of your own living room live on WETA – TV or at WETA’s website.

Area Museums Making Cuts

‘Castle silhouette’

The Newseum has cut 29 people from its full-time staff, trimming down for the second time since its April 2008 reopening. The cuts came late last month. The floor staff saw only minor cutbacks and the museum president, Kenneth Paulson, has stated that the cuts “should not affect the experience of museum visitors.”

Fundraising seems to be the culprit for the Newseum, which is not a federally subsidized museum. Paulson indicated that the museum had fewer new donors that caused the facility to fall short of its budgeted pledges by about 20 percent.

Across the Mall (relatively speaking), the Smithsonian Institution has received over 150 responses to a voluntary buyout plan it announced in September. The Smithsonian stated earlier this fall that it wanted to trim its staff for economic reasons, especially due to large declines in its endowment. In 2003, when the institution last offered a buyout, 238 employees left. Officials have said that with the tighter operational budget for 2010, no buyouts would be offered next year.

National Opera Forced To Cutback

Opera goers have fewer opportunities for frilly stage shows and musical pizazz during the 2010-11 season now that the National Opera is cutting back.

The rumors  floating around the past few weeks are true – WNO is dropping eight staff positions and re-issuing a new (shorter) season of productions due to a decrease in their annual budget. The 2010-11 season will host five operas, which is one less than this season, and two less than one before.

The international image the WNO aimed to achieve since welcoming Plácido Domingo to the WNO team in 2003 runs the risk of decline due to this slight financial set-back but their “show must go on!” attitude, dedication to the fine arts, and planning for future fundraising opportunities could surely prove to be what restores the program.

Salahis on Today

salahiontoday.png

The White House Gatecrashers, Michaele and Tareq Salahi, were on the Today Show this morning to talk about the State Dinner and all the attention that has come along with the event. They’re sticking to their claims that they were invited to the State Dinner. They’re saying now, that “their lives have been destroyed,” over the incident, which sounds like exactly what someone auditioning to be on a reality show, and frankly, if your life was destroyed by the fact that you crashed a State Dinner? Good. Just be glad you’re not in jail. Yet.

They were cagey in terms of talking about who invited them to the State Dinner, suggesting that the Secret Service is preventing the release of their invitation. They’re refusing to comment with regard to the reports regarding Michele Jones that suggest that she was unequivocal regarding their utter lack of an invitation.

These are not people who belong in the spotlight. These are people who belong in jail.

Edited, 11:12a: This will be our first & last word on the Salahis, unless of course they get hauled off to jail. Then expect one more post to gloat.

BREAKING: Fire Bombs in NW DC

twitpic

A reader and WUSA 9 report that a man threw Molotov cocktails into the intersection at 17th and K St..  He was apparently holding a sign that said “Justice” on top of a van with “Not my $200 Million” emblazoned on the side.  It is not clear exactly what he was protesting.  Police arrived on the scene quickly and took the man into custody.  At this point, it appears that no one was hurt, although traffic is stopped at the intersection in question.  We’ll get back to you with more details as they become available.

Update 3:05: DC Fire and EMS Twitter reports a suspicious package in the van.

Update 3:08: Live video feed of 17th and K St. intersection.

Update 3:13:  One of the entrances to Farragut North is closed due to the incident.

Update 3:20: Officers seem to be moving around the van without much trepidation.  The suspicious package appears to have been a false alarm.

Update 3:27: Van driven away by police.  It appears as though the incident is wrapping up.  Can any readers on the scene confirm the Molotov cocktails?

Update 3:50: Intersection is reported to be clear.  Just in time for it to get gridlocked by Maryland drivers during rush hour!

Update 4:00: Several witnesses (thanks Sean!) report that there weren’t actually any Molotov cocktails, after all.  WUSA 9 still reports that 3 were thrown.

White House to Hold Science Fair

Via the New York Times comes the news that the Obama White House will be holding Science Fairs to honor those individuals who are capable at producing scientific knowledge and events, and not just those who are good at sports:

“If you win the N.C.A.A. championships, you come to the White House. Well, if you’re a young person and you’ve produced the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too,” Mr. Obama said. “Scientists and engineers ought to stand side by side with athletes and entertainers as role models, and here at the White House, we’re going to lead by example.”

To this I say: Fuck Yeah, Science.

Attention all DC sports fans — Ryan Zimmerman is officially the coolest Washington National. Why? He’s hosting/MC-ing Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall’s birthday party at the Shadowroom.

How did this pairing come about? No one’s sure at this point. What we do know is that it’s happening.

An anonymous source for the National Enquirer said Zimmerman might be “doing magic tricks and making balloon animals for the kids,” but really … who in the heck made the final decision in naming the Golden Glover/Silver Slugger/All-Star the host of a party?

I mean, COME ON folks! We’ve all seen his interviews. Can he play ball? Yes siree. But can he host a party? I guess we’ll find that answer sooner than we thought.

One person was left dead this morning after the tour bus for 16-year-old pop star Miley Cyrus overturned on I-85, 30 miles south of Richmond. Cyrus was not on board.

Her black-and-maroon luxury tour bus hit the concrete at around 8:15 a.m. after skidding several hundred feet, according to Virginia State Police. The bus was on its way to Greensboro, N.C. for the next stop on the 2009/2010 “Wonder World Tour” when the  accident occurred.

Members of the Cyrus production crew were on board but only one of the nine were injured. No further personal information regarding the individuals involved in the accident have been revealed by police.

Cyrus is still scheduled to perform on Sunday in Greensboro.

Fire In The Sky, Thunder In Your Ears

Boy oh boy did DC get her share of nature’s greatest light show last night.

If you didn’t see it, you might’ve been sleeping. But if you didn’t hear it, then I’m jealous because I’m a light sleeper and you’re not.

This November weather rarity was explained by NBC4 Meteorologist Tom Kierien: a front from the Midwest picked up speed while moving through the mid-Atlantic region, generating isolated thunderstorms with frequent lightening. This is odd during the post-spring/summer months due to cool temperatures, but somehow the airspace above our fair city provided enough lift to create the rainy show we were treated to on Thursday night.

Sounds good to me. I mean, it could be worse: below 30 and snowing! (Knock on wood.)

History buffs take note — there’s a new, interactive Web site being launched in honor of the 146th anniversary of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

This multimedia expansion of the pristine marble temple was launched today by the National Park Service. The site includes videos, panoramas and oral testimonials from the park rangers who have worked at the memorial for decades, according WTOP.

If this catches on as a web trend, similar sites may be launched in the coming months. The nonprofit Trust for the National Mall is currently raising money to build the sites for other Washington memorials.

The site should be viewed with a high-speed connection. Still having trouble viewing the site? NPS recommends downloading the latest version of FlashPlayer.

Public Enemy Spreads Holiday Cheer To Homeless DC Youth

DC just got some serious points added to their street cred.

Hip hop bad boys Public Enemy are back and are storming the DC streets tonight via a flat-bed truck (slowly making their way to GW’s Lisner Auditorium). If that doesn’t make you want to shout “FLAVOR FLAAAAAV”, I don’t know what will.

Public Enemy’s evening is set to start at the Sasha Bruce House with a Thanksgiving dinner for the 30+ homeless kids staying in the home as a part of National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. Shortly after, they’ll load up that flat bed and start doing what they do best — busting beats and pumping politically incorrect jams.

The flat bed show is scheduled to start around 7:30 pm at the Foggy Bottom intersection of 18th and G Streets NW.

Want VIP access to the show? Easy — bring a winter coat to donate and you’ll get an instant ticket upgrade.

Want to track the truck? The Post’s got the dish of where it should be and around when.

Streetcars En Route

streetcar.jpg

The Streetcars that will ride the rails in Anacostia in 2011 or 2012 left Ostrava, Czech Republic today first via flatbed truck, and then they’re bound for a cross-Atlantic ship to get here to the District in about 4-6 weeks. The three cars cost $10M to procure and have been in storage at the manufacturer for the last two and a half years. In addition, we’ve had to extend their warranty, despite being kept in storage since manufacture. They’re a fairly hefty investment in the new streetcar system, and hopefully we’ll one day see them on our streets! No word where they’ll be stored while we wait for the rails to be built.
