The Winning Ticket: San Fermin @ DC9, 10/24/13

video-shoot-photo-2-ellis-girl-bull-facing-camera

Today we have a pair of tickets to give away for tomorrow night’s San Fermin show at DC9.

San Fermin, pronounced [SAN fur-MEEN], and their self-titled, debut album is the brainchild of Brooklyn music composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone who wrote the album in the Canadian Rocky Mountains over the course of six weeks. Tracks on the album alternate between female and male lead vocals allowing Leone’s concept for the album – a dialogue between an earnest, unhappy man and a cynical, elusive woman – to come to life. The inspiration for this concept was Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises which explains the album’s title, the bull-theme photos and the Spanish song titles.

Not surprisingly love anchors the issues explored in the album, but there is also a strong Biblical tie, in particular to forgiveness, hopelessness, lamentation and pilgrimage. These themes are acutely emphasized by the musical deftness of the eight-member group composed of Allen Tate and Rae Cassidy on lead vocals, Rebekah Durham on vocals/violin, Stephen Chen on saxophone, John Brandon on trumpet, Mike Hanf on drums, Tyler McDiarmid on guitar and Ellis Ludwig-Leone on keyboard. Whew. Hope I covered everyone there. Continue reading

This week we are giving away a pair of tickets to see Gomez perform at the 9:30 Club on Monday, July 18th. These guys debuted at the tail end of the Brit-Pop explosion and have kept their sound upbeat and eclectic over the years thanks to their multiple songwriter approach and rotating vocal duties. The Winning Ticket: Rx Bandits

As a way to say thanks to our loyal readers, We Love DC will be giving away a pair of tickets to a 9:30 Club concert to one lucky reader each week. Check back here every Wednesday morning at 9am to find out what tickets we’re giving away and leave a comment for your chance to be the lucky winner!

This week we are giving away a pair of tickets to see Rx Bandits perform at 9:30 Club on Saturday, July 9th. I haven’t really followed Rx Bandits since they emerged from the ska-punk scene back in the day, but from the tour preview below, it looks and sounds like they have developed into a more sonically daring group with a harder edge. What you’ll also see in the preview below is that this is actually a pretty nice triple-bill with Maps & Atlases and Zechs Marquise (a band who have a great referential name and an awesome sound that I will be tracking down more of ASAP). Also as you can read on the image above, this is Rx Bandits’ final tour, so these free tickets are probably your last chance to catch them until the inevitable reunion tour ten to fifteen years from now.

We are very pleased to be giving away two tickets to see The Twilight Singers perform at the 9:30 Club on Monday, May 9th. The Twilight Singers consistently deliver great live shows and their lead singer Greg Dulli is in a class all by himself. Dulli has been knock ’em dead since his days with the amazing Afghan Whigs and with The Twilight Singers has somehow managed to craft five incredible albums that started where the Whigs left off and evolved into an even more mature and emotional sound.

The Winning Ticket: Balkan Beat Box

As a way to say thanks to our loyal readers, We Love DC will be giving away a pair of tickets to a 9:30 Club concert to one lucky reader each week. Check back here every Wednesday morning at 9am to find out what tickets we’re giving away and leave a comment for your chance to be the lucky winner!

Today we’re giving away a pair of tickets to a late night party with Balkan Beat Box at 9:30 Club on Friday, April 29th (NOTE: Doors for this show are 11pm).

When some of your founding members served time with gypsy-rock phenoms Gogol Bordello and 90’s indie-rock princes Firewater, your band is guaranteed to combine global influences for an explosive good time. Balkan Beat Box specialize in an unclassifiable blend of classic Balkan and Mediterranean instrumentals, hip-hop, gypsy rock, and punk. Their live shows are pure insanity fueled by their volatile mix of diaspora sounds and high energy showmanship.

The Winning Ticket: Scala & Kolancy Brothers

As a way to say thanks to our loyal readers, We Love DC will be giving away a pair of tickets to a 9:30 Club concert to one lucky reader each week. Check back here every Wednesday morning at 9am to find out what tickets we’re giving away and leave a comment for your chance to be the lucky winner!

This week’s ticket giveaway is for a pair of tickets to see Scala & The Kolancy Brothers perform at the 9:30 Club on Monday, April 25th.

If you don’t know what the heck Scala & The Kolancy Brothers is yet, don’t feel bad, you are not alone. Odds are you might know their work without even knowing who they are. Their weird and heart-breaking cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” was used heavily in the ad campaign for the film “The Social Network” last year. That’s where I was first exposed to this massive all girl choir from Belgium and the pair of brothers who work with them. Digging into Scala a little deeper reveals a group that specializes in soul searching choral arrangements of famous pop tunes; a niche market that they have been dominating for years. Thanks in no small part to the exposure that “The Social Network” provided, Scala & The Kolancy Brothers are able to bring their live show to America. I have a feeling this is going to be an unusual and special night at the 9:30 Club.
