Georgetown shop, Commander Salamander, which surprisingly has its very own definition in the urbandictionary, will be shutting it’s Wisconsin Avenue doors shortly. The shop known for it’s puny t-shirts, colorful trucks and gag gifts has long been a staple of the Georgetown shopping scene. No word yet on why the shop is closing, but fortunately, sister shop Up Against The Wall, with a location in the Georgetown Mall on M Street across from J. Paul’s, will remain open.
I heard they are going to open a Penguin Feather there.
@lou what’s Penguin Feather?
Lou, I just laughed so hard I think something ruptured. Talk about another blast from the past…
Rebecca, Penguin Feather was an old school DC record store (yes, records). For us who grew up here back in those days, Kemp Mill, Commander Salamander etc were the places to hang. My commute takes me past Commander Salamander every day, but I probably haven’t stepped foot inside in 25 years. Might have to pop in before it’s gone.
@Lou they’re having 80% off closing out sale. you could get those tapered electric blue jeans you’ve always wanted.
NOBODY wants to see that
The Penguin Feather in Vienna was a head shop that sold used records, tapes, etc. Eventually, they got busted too many times to stay open.
oh that’s sad! some of my best memories were skipping school and going to commanders with my friends!
This is really really sad. it’s like finding out your favorite street bum that you pass every day finally bit it after 30 some years :(
yo up against the wall is NOT in the Georgetown Mall. Do your research!
@yo indeed you are correct. Up Against The Wall is located on M Street directly across from J. Paul’s.
Georgetownmetropolitan.com has a great round up of all the closings/openings in the Georgetown hood. Very comprehensive.

I worked at Penguin feather records back in the early 80s. I’m from England. Anyone remember me?
