We Love Music: April Music Preview

Every band’s gotta start somewhere. Last month, we took a look at local acts at local venues. The homegrown groups got some sweet, sweet lovin’ via your attendance at their shows. April, the first full month of spring, calls for a savory new way to titillate your aesthetic sense. Here are five concerts to catch at the hometown venues you’ve learned to love with up-and-coming east coast (and Canadian!) musicians, air guitar pros, and a personal favorite of mine (aka live jazz). Johns Hopkins Has a Little Fun

You’ve got to love a major university that can poke a little fun at itself on April Fools Day.  Today, the administration of Johns Hopkins University announced that they’re finally dropping the ‘s’ at the end of Johns once and for all.  Not only did they craft a nice little press release about the change (saying that they thought the extra ‘s’ was probably just a typo anyway), but they have some great photos all over their site of the ‘s’ being removed from university buildings.  My favorite has got to be the front page image.

Well played, JHU.  Anyone spot any other good local April Fools jokes out there?

It’s official: Metro has appointed James M. Dougherty of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency its new Chief Safety Officer. His first day will be April 19th, when he’ll be knee-deep in orientation to Metro.

While credited with improving SFMTA’s safety record, he’s only occupied the top safety job there for a year. He’s held safety positions with two other transit agencies before that, however, and was a police officer for 22 years.

So just in case you didn’t know, April is National Frog Month, and Alexandria’s Buzz Bakery is ringing it in with all the froggy food you can imagine.  Pastry Chef Josh Short has created a dessert menu that I’m sure will make you green with envy.

With everything from iced Kermit Cookies for $2.25 each to a Frogger Pie made with an Oreo crust and crème de menthe cream for $2.95 per slice, these are just too cute to pass up.  Even better, if you pick up half a dozen iced Kermit Cookies or more, you can enter to win a brand new DVD of “The Princess and the Frog!”   You’ll definitely score points with the kiddies with that one, so make sure you stop in soon!

Today is what should have been Sean Taylor’s 27th birthday. Taylor was murdered November 27, 2007, having died from critical injuries due to gunshots wounds from intruders who entered his Miami area home.

Taylor is remembered for his hard work as an NFL safety who played for the Washington Redskins for the duration of his four year career.

He was also posthumously inducted into the Redskins’ Ring of Fame on November 30, 2008.

Where’s yer kilt? Everyone’s Scottish during Tartan Week!

Are you a fan of Irn-Bru, neeps and tatties and wee drams of whisky? Did all that sound like a load of gibberish? Nae bother. Regardless, dust off those kilts and sporrans, Tartan Week is coming our way. Sadly, Scotland Week doesn’t seem to be making too many appearances in the nation’s captial this year, but good old Alexandria will be getting in the spirit this Saturday.

On April 3 from noon to 6 p.m., a National Tartan Day Celebration takes over Market Square (at 301 King Street). Think piping, drumming, kilts, shopping and live music by The Devil’s Tailors. I, for one, cannae think of a better (free!) way to spend a sun-kissed Saturday.

Max: With the weather shaping up to be perfect for the weekend, there will likely be very little hibernating going on.  Friday night I’m super excited about Cherry Blast, Pink Line Project’s follow up to last year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival event.  This “creative extravaganza” will feature performance art, dance, film, fashion and more (and I’m happy that it’s only a few blocks from my house). I’ll be playing with my new camera at the United/Revolution home opener on Saturday.  And sadly, after brunch at Lauriol Plaza, I’ll be indoors on Sunday editing photos from the weekend.

Tom: Big weekend!  The best man from our wedding is in town, and it looks like we’re going to spend some time being tourists.  Friday after the cherry blossoms, we will be having one last cookout at our Arlington place before the big move into the city in two weeks.  Then Saturday it’s brunch and a birthday party for my cousin-niece Lillith in Falls Church.  Saturday is also a sports extravaganza double-header day, with the Nats finishing their pre-season against the Red Sox at Nats Park at 4pm, and then D.C. United will be opening their home season (tickets still available) against the Revolution.  That’s right: It’s DC vs Boston on Saturday!  Sunday is Easter, and that will mean the city’s restaurants will be a zoo.  Catch me at home, brunching it up with my sweetie after Church.   Continue reading

Ice Cream gluttony for a good cause

I don’t mean your own at the B&J ice cream happy hours, I mean Paul of local music duo Paul & Storm eating an entire Fudgy the Whale tonight. What started out as a stunt to get more twitter followers has turned into An Event as well as a drive to raise money for the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

And just because community service can have a personal payoff as well, local business ThinkGeek is raffling two $100 gift certificates off to everyone who contributes via the link on this page. Each $1 gets you 1 chance to win. Like a lotto scratch-off card, but with less rubbing.

Wait, that sounded dirty.

Watch the debacle live at 8pm tonight if you dare.

Nationals Make Improvements Before Pre-Season Opener

Victory Knot Pretzel

Special to We Love DC by Hal Mangold

Let’s get one thing straight right now: The Washington Nationals probably aren’t going to be very good this year. They might be bearable, even fun, to watch, but expecting them to be anywhere other than knife-fighting in the basement of the NL East is probably too much to ask given the catastrophic 2009 season. I’m pretty sure the brass over at Nationals Park are well aware of this, and at the very least it looks like they’re trying to make sure that coming to DC’s temple of baseball has other attractions than what’s on the field. So it came to pass that on the stunning Spring day that was yesterday, the Nationals rolled out the PR red carpet (literally, as it happens) and guided a motley band of local TV, radio, print and online media around Nationals park to show off the new polish that’s been applied to the place. There’s something kind of magical about walking around a mostly empty ballpark, and the weather couldn’t have been better for it. Continue reading

If you missed last week’s Free Cone Day don’t fret, because the Ben & Jerry’s in Georgetown is throwing ice cream happy hours from 4-7pm. The happy hour special is 3 scoops for a mere $3.  That’s an uber steal considering scoops normally go for $2-3 a pop.  With the fantastic sunny and warm weather predicted for the next few days, let’s trade up our HH beers for some HH Cherry Garcia.

Five Baseball Lessons From Thomas & Billy Heywood

Billy Heywood Played Here
The HHH Metrodome, Summer 2009
Photo byRachel Levitin

Billy Heywood could be integral toward the Nationals having a better than sub-par season. Don’t know who Billy Heywood is? He’s the first and only 12-year-old baseball manager whose team lost to a guy who notched 300 wins in the 2009 season (against the Nationals at Nationals Park) aka Randy Johnson in the 1994 film, Little Big League.

Sure – Billy Heywood is a fictional character from a 90’s sports movie made for children. That is but a mere technicality. Writer Gregory K. Pincus captured what was great about baseball through a 12-year-old boy who, if he were Jim Riggleman right now, would know how to knock some sense into our Nationals before the season gets them down.

Here are five lessons the 2010 Nats could learn from Billy Heywood and his grandpa Thomas:

Lesson One: There’s 162 Games, Don’t Forget

Thomas Heywood: Okay. It’s only May. A lot can happen. [On the Twins losing record] … You’re not making excuses because the Twins are losing? You’re not front runners are you?”

The correct answer in this scenario is: “No way, I’d rather see the worst team ever than go to my grandmother’s,” according to the movie. I agree. As much as I love my grandmothers, going to a baseball game on a school night was always a can’t miss opportunity.

Anything can happen between April and October. Anything. That’s what’s great about baseball. That’s why even the team that loses the most deserves support. They’ve made it through the minors. It took most of them awhile. They deserve fans just as much as the next guy.

City Council has been hammering out the rules related to medical marijuana, and it doesn’t look like DC residents are going to get the right to cultivate at home, at least not for a while. (There goes my plan for my new backyard!)

The bill under consideration by the Council allows DC residents with a specific list of medical conditions to possess up to 2 ounces per month, which the Examiner reports is enough for “about a joint a day.” The bill does provide for a committee to study the home cultivation question and make a recommendation to the Council by 2012.

I know that I’m having a really difficult day here thanks to some jerks at Comcast, and this baby bird made me go awwwww just a little bit. Better yet? there’s video of it pecking out through its shell.

Eat Like Me: March’s Best Dishes

Spring is a lovely time in Washington – this isn’t a revelation. But it’s a perfectly pleasing time to be eating out in our city. Chefs are getting excited about spring farm produce, and menus are waking up from their brussel-sprout-and-short-rib trance. Fish makes it’s way to a more prominent place on the menu, and cherry cocktails celebrate the turn of the season. The arrival of Zaytinya’s Easter festival makes me think of sundresses, and the announcement of RAMMY nominations makes me want to strip off my tights and thrown on some open-toed heels. These events that make DC the perfect place to eat in spring, and I’m oh-so-happy to be back here again! Continue reading

Anyone can participate; the choreography is available on YouTube, and while it looks complicated, it has been specifically designed for novice dancers to learn easily.

But maybe you’d prefer to have a professional teach you the steps? No problem! Dhoonya will be hosting workshops to teach the choreography at Metro-accessible locations in Arlington and Takoma Park:

  • Wednesday, March 31st, 7pm – The Dance Exchange, 7117 Maple Ave, Takoma Park, MD

Where in the World is Mayor Adrian Fenty?

The headline for this post sounds a lot better if you sing it to the tune of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” Mike Debonis from the City Paper has the word that Mayor Fenty’s out of the country. Worse still, his return isn’t clear and his spokesman’s not talking. No one begrudges the Mayor a vacation, but a comment would be nice, or perhaps a timetable for your speedy return might be a good thing to work on, don’t you think?

Long train is long. Did you not notice?

‘blue shadow’
courtesy of ‘philliefan99’

WMATA has a press release out about a minor but odd incident that happened this morning. According to the statement a train of eight cars that was ready to be put into service accidentally coupled with another six-car line of cars that had been stored behind it in the rail yard. While the release does not say, presumably a physical junction can happen without someone taking some sort of deliberate action. Perhaps just bumping the cars together, as the release certainly doesn’t imply that someone must have taken steps to couple them.

After the train pulled into the station and allowed passengers to board it was apparently brought to someone’s attention that, hey, there seem to be a whole lot of other cars hanging around back there – is that on purpose? Passengers were unloaded and shortly afterward able to board another train.

If you’re thinking “how exactly does a train operator not notice that she or he is dragging 75% more cars than expected?” well, apparently WMATA is as well. The release concludes with “The train operator was taken for standard drug and alcohol testing and is out of service pending an investigation.”

We Love Music: Midnight Spin

MS Piano

The Cubs came to town to play the Nationals last July. As a Chicago North Sider by birth, I refuse to miss any Cubs-Nats games played inside the Beltway. As luck would have it, I showed up at the Bullpen beer garden outside Nationals Park before game two of the Cubs-Nats series; the same night Midnight Spin happened to be the entertainment on tap.

I remember it like it was yesterday. A friend of mine and I were a few lite beers into our evening about an hour before game time when out of the loud speakers rang the opening chords to Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” à la Midnight Spin. It was love at first listen.

Beer induced love is a pure love, at least in my experience. My friend bet me that I wouldn’t remember the band’s name in the morning. That friend was wrong. Unlike a beer induced one-night stand, not only did I remember their name, but I wanted a second date. Continue reading
