Brunch Updates (Brupdates?) on 14th Street

Were you just thinking to yourself, “I wish I had more brunch options on 14th Street between P and T Streets?” Well, the restaurant gods were listening to your odd request, because two places that fit the criteria are upping the brunch ante.

At Masa 14, you can eat all you can eat and drink all you can drink on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00am to 2:30pm. For $35, you can sample as many of their featured tiny dishes as you would like and sip (or slurp) on their bottomless signature cocktails. There is the Masa Breakfast Pizza, Chilaquiles, Pho Beef Sandwich, and Tenderloin Benedict. And the good news is, you don’t have to choose! Have ’em all.

A little further down the street, Estadio will debut their brunch menu starting this Sunday. For now they will just be serving on Sundays, but by mid-November, you will be able to enjoy Saturday brunch as well. Some dishes from the dinner menu will be available in addition to breakfast specialties like Spanish torrijas (think French toast) and fried hen eggs with chorizo.

So many options, so few Sundays (and Saturdays).

The Winning Ticket: Robert Randolph

RobertRandolphP

As a way to say thanks to our loyal readers, We Love DC will be giving away a pair of tickets to a 9:30 Club concert to one lucky reader each week. Check back here every Wednesday morning at 9am to find out what tickets we’re giving away and leave a comment for your chance to be the lucky winner!

Another cool one to give away this week! Enter to win a pair of tickets to catch the master of Sacred Steel soul himself, Robert Randolph and his Family Band at 9:30 Club on Friday October, 29th!

In case you didn’t know it, Sacred Steel is what the Pentecostal Church music circuit calls the pedal steel guitar. My recommendation to the winner is to snag a spot near the front of one of the balconies to watch Randolph’s fingers flying all over that thing. He is one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time after all. Oh yeah, did I mention Randolph and The Family Band have one of the toe-tapping-est sounds around? Just check out the tunes on their Myspace page and try to resist their funky soul sound.

For your chance to win these tickets simply leave a comment on this post using a valid email address between 9am and 4pm today. One entry per email address, please. Tickets for this show are also available through Ticketfly If today doesn’t turn out to be your lucky day, check back here each Wednesday for a chance to win tickets to other great concerts.

Bruins Drop Caps 3-1

The Boston Bruins capitalized on some early opportunities and held on to the lead in front of stellar play by goalie Tim Thomas to defeat the Caps 3-1 last night at the Verizon Center. It was the Caps first lost at home this season. Goalie Semyon Varlamov came off the bench to replace a dizzy Michal Neuvirth halfway through the first period. Alex Ovechkin was held to no points for the first time this season by Boston’s tight defense.

The Capitals started the game with some jump in their legs, getting several quality scoring chances in the first and generally dictating the pace of the game. Only some exceptional saves by Bruins goalie Tim Thomas kept the Caps off the scoreboard. Even an early fight between Matt Hendricks and Greg Campbell went in the Caps favor. But the Caps’ trend of allowing odd-man breaks continued to hurt when Milan Lucic sprung Nathan Horton and David Krejci on a two-on-one break with with Krejci converting to give the Bruins the lead. It was the fourth time in six games that the opposing team has scored first on the Caps. Two minutes later, Lucic put back a rebound on a shot by Johnny Boychuk to go up 2-0 with just seven shots on goal.

DDOT this afternoon released a 42-page updated Streetcar System Plan to the Council for review and approval.  The plan focuses on the existing line that is intended to run from Union Station to Benning Rd NE & Oklahoma Ave NE, as well as the Anacostia line that’s planned to run from the Anacostia Metro to 2750 South Capitol Street near St. Elizabeth’s.

DDOT intends to have the system begin operations in the Spring of 2012.  The plan released today includes a set of goals that have been funded by the council but require approval.  Those plans include options for turnarounds at both termini (10 sites, total) and a maintenance facility (3 sites, total), and recommendations based on those options, and will build overhead power lines along the H Street line.  We’ll have more about the plan later this week.

And so it begins: Newseum announces New Years’ Plans

There are just ten and a half weeks before the end of the year.  73 days.  But, starting today, you can expect the New Year’s Eve plans emails to start rolling in. Newseum was the first in my email box, and they’re offering a gala formal called the “Headliners Ball,” which features two hours of open bar, and a champagne toast at midnight for $125 a person.  You can add a five course dinner at The Source by Wolfgang Puck for another $100, and then you can crash at Hotel Monaco for another $199.  That’s $650 for an evening for two at Newseum on New Year’s.  Whew, that seems pricy for one night, don’t you think?

DC9 has liquor license suspended

In a notice posted Tuesday afternoon, the DC Alcoholic Beverages Regulatory Agency suspended indefinitely the liquor license of music venue DC9, proving that once again, liquor licensing can be used as carrot and stick in this occasionally puritan town.  DC ABRA has indefinitely suspended DC9 from serving any alcoholic beverages at their establishment.  The club has cancelled or moved all shows through the end of the month.

We’ve requested comment from DC ABRA director Fred Moosally, but at press time, haven’t had a reply.

Nats extend Mike Rizzo’s contract, promote him

In the days following Stan Kasten’s announcement that he was departing the Nationals, there was much conversation concerning the fate of the President’s position with the team.  Many wondered if the job might be split into two pieces, one for stadium and non-baseball operations, and one for baseball front office operations.  Today, we got the answer, as the Nationals promoted general manager Mike Rizzo to a new position: Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations and General Manager.

Ben Goessling from MASN Sports was on the call this afternoon and has a full summary with quotes from the call.  Rizzo’s promotion came with a five year contract extension, putting him at the top of the club’s baseball hierarchy through the 2015 season.  Principal Owner Ted Lerner is very pleased with the extension of their front office man, saying, “Mike Rizzo is unquestionably one of the best baseball minds in the game.”

Jaime Moreno, DC Soccer Legend

Jaime Moreno, DC Legend

For those that don’t follow soccer, it’s hard to put into appropriate terms what Jaime Moreno means to D.C. United and the MLS as a whole.  As crucial as Riggins and Sonny Jurgensen are to the Redskins success a generation as ago, Moreno means more than that to United.  As important as Ovechkin is to the Caps, or Strasburg to the Nationals, Moreno is all that and more.

Moreno’s contributions to Major League Soccer are on par with Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron’s to baseball.  In his 14-year MLS career, he’s the only member of the 100-goal, 100-assist club, and is tied for the all-time lead for goals with 132.  He gets a shot at 133 this Saturday, and we’d like to send you and a friend to go see the game.  Leave your name in the comments with a valid email address in the appropriate field and we’ll pick at random on Thursday afternoon.

The team has been celebrating Moreno for the last month, and their archive of coverage is deeply impressive. Moreno has been the constant leading presence for the team from its creation through its four MLS Cup Championships and through the denouement of United over the last two years.  In many ways, Jaime Moreno is D.C. United, and it’s hard to picture the state of the franchise without him as part.

The team has a number of events planned for Saturday, culminating with a special honoring of Jaime Moreno by the 2011 Season Ticket Holders with all of the earned trophies during Moreno’s career.  Moreno is probably the least-celebrated DC star athlete, which is a shame.  Get out to RFK on Saturday afternoon and give Moreno the attention he deserves.

The John Wall Impact: People Will Notice

DC has suddenly become a very crowded sports town in the last six months. Even without what some would call “winning” franchises, the national spotlight has constantly swirled in the direction of the District throughout the fall. Most interestingly, that focus may have finally grown to include a team that has generally been under the radar for a few seasons (at least for its on court performance): the Washington Wizards. The center of the attention is the lucky draw of a lifetime, the #1 pick from the University of Kentucky, guard John Wall.

Photographers get a win

Via our neighbors up in New York City, some good news for all you DC photographers: The Department of Homeland Security is, once again, being forced to admit that you have the right to take pictures of federal buildings. As part of a settlement brokered by the New York Civil Liberties Union, DHS –and specifically the Federal Protective Service, those guys who run the security for almost every federal office building around the country, including those in DC–has “agreed to provide federal officers written instructions emphasizing the public’s right to photograph and record outside federal courthouses,” the NYCLU says. We Love Vegan: Part 1

courtesy of ‘erin m’

Over an especially gluttonous meal one night, filled with lamb chops and veal, we had a thought: What would life be like without all this meaty goodness? But not only without meat, what about life without this cheesy, eggy goodness? That crazy night (after maybe a few too many glasses of wine) the idea of Vegan Week was born. We, your loyal food writers here at We Love DC, decided to tried are very best to eat completely, 100% vegan for one week.

Well…one work week. Ashley ate most of her meals out of the house, for no other reason than everything she knew how to cook had bacon in it, while Katie had to make her decidedly unveg work location work for her. What follows is the sometimes humorous, sometimes surprising, sometimes depressing account of Vegan Week 2010. (For more on our decision to go vegan, check back here Thursday at 11 a.m. for the wrap-up post in this series, We Love Vegan: The Question and Answer Session.)

Dun-duh-duuuuuuuh.

A disclaimer: Through plenty of Plant Alternative research and polling our friends who know a little bit about living a meat-free lifestyle, we came to our conclusions about how to attack Vegan Week. We tried, to the best of our abilities to eat vegan, and to our knowledge we did. If we screwed something up along the way, it was on account of our own stupidity more than anything else. We are not vegans, not even vegetarians, but we tried our best. Also, just a reminder, we here at We Love DC respect all lifestyles, from the meatful to the plantful, and expect that you do too. Take your haterade elsewhere, thanks. Continue reading

Tomorrow night, you can go bare in Dupont Circle – at the launch of Herban Lifestyle’s Naked ™ beauty and skin care line, that is. Come check out the new body butter, mineral soak, facial masque and more. They have only minimally processed natural, organic and fair trade ingredients and no harsh chemicals.

Chief Herban Developer Mary Kearns will be debuting them at One Restaurant and Lounge, at 1606 20th St. NW. Even if she were not a friend of mine, I’d still suggest you go; her products are great, and they’re very green.

Prices range from $5 for lip balm to $35 for bath tea. Fifteen percent of tomorrow night’s proceeds will be donated to Miriam’s Kitchen.

Despite our best efforts, it’s hard to pick a favorite time of year.  Some say it’s the spring when the weather starts warming up and the cherry blossoms burst onto the scene.  Not long after we’re given an 80 degree day and are drinking margaritas on a patio which could easily contend for my favorite time of the year.  Yet somewhere deep down in my twisted psyche, the month of October will always hold a special place.

Perhaps it’s my memory of wearing vampire teeth with fake blood on them and running door to door with my friends to fill our pillowcases full of candy.  After a few years of practice, we knew which houses gave out caramel apples, which gave out toothbrushes, and which geriatric neighbors had the ability to scare the crap out of us regardless of what they were giving out.  As Seinfeld once said, the main objective of a kid is to, “Get candy, get candy, get candy,” and get candy we did.  Unfortunately, most houses gave out miniature versions of the real thing, from boxes of Nerds, to Dots, to Snickers.  It brought us great joy when our rich neighbors down the street plopped full size candy bars into our bags.  The weight of them as they hit the bottoms of our bags caused our tiny little arms to strain, but brought big smiles to our faces.  We then scurried off through the crisp October air, or snow as Denver would often have, to the next lit doorway in our sweaty little costumes.  We were on an important mission, a mission to get candy.

I Never Had a Motorcade for Parent-Teacher Conferences

Motorcades are one of those distinctly DC things that make morning traffic through the District even more fun. This morning, if you were on the Maryland side of things, you may have had a little extra company as President Obama and the First Lady took off from the White House early this morning to visit with Sasha and Malia’s teachers at Sidwell. West Wing Reports on Twitter indicated that they left fairly early (around 7:15 a.m.), and, as the Associated Press added, the couple stopped by Sasha’s elementary school before meeting with Malia’s educators.

Given the era in which we live, some cable talking heads will argue that this is just the President trying to push more of his current education platform through example, but the timing is more convenient than political. The Obamas have consistently attended their daughters’ conferences as long as 44 has been in office, including earlier this year in the spring semester.

Crystal City adds roadway tramp-stamp

Crystal City Road Tattoo: "Labor Line"

Last year, Vermont Avenue because the first street in DC to sport a fancy asphalt tramp stamp, and now Crystal City’s 18th Street in Arlington is joining the club, with a Steed Taylor-created “Labor Line”, as pictured above.  The design appears to be an evolution of an earlier Taylor piece called Evelyn’s Knot.

Personally, I’m not sure I understand the value of the road tattoos, and the coloring of the asphalt, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

District breaks 100-homicide mark

‘Crime Solvers’

The Washington Examiner reports that as of today, the District’s homicide tally for 2010 has gone over 100, to 103. The 100 homicide mark has frequently been cited by police chief Cathy Lanier as a benchmark number that she wants to hold the city under, but has not yet been able to achieve. It’s worth noting (as the Examiner does), that the District took an extra month to reach 100 this year, and that homicides are down 5.5% in comparison to last year. As of October 18th, 2009, there had been 109 District homicides in that year.

Giveaway: Worn Magazine is Back!

All Photographs by Max Cook for We Love DC.

People say that bigger does not always mean better.   However, in the case of Worn Magazine’s second issue – this statement could not be any less true.  With 52 pages of glossy, DC-centric fashion, 60-plus original photographs, and the introduction of contributing writers, Worn magazine is bigger, better, and, most definitely, brighter than ever.

With the success of the inaugural issue, Worn Magazine has continued to deliver on their promise – “to bring greater awareness of local fashion and art to the District and to the nation” – by making the focus of their fall/winter 2010/2011 issue to be on the artists who are trying to make it in DC.   Nicole Aguirre, Worn’s Editor-in-Chief explains it best in her editor’s letter.
