We Love Weekends

We Love Weekends: Sep 28 – 30

Rebecca: Friday I’m headed to Penn Social to drink some fine brews, play skee ball, billiards, shuffle board, foosball and shoot some virtual big game via Big Buck Hunter. You know it!!! Saturday I’m checking out the Green Festival at the Convention Center. I’m particularly looking forward to DIY workshops like: Vertical Gardening Demonstration and Bike Maintenance101. Sunday I’m finally catching the George Bellows exhibition at the National Gallery of Art.

Carl: I have a meeting Saturday morning at the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria. If you have never been there, it is definitely worth a tour. They take you all the way to the top and on a clear day, as Saturday is looking like it might be, you can see quite far. Saturday and Sunday will be spent working and putting together some promotional materials for my book that was just published about living in Buddhist temples in Thailand. Also beer. I need to get back on the homebrew writing horse again. I wonder what such an animal would look like.

Tom: This weekend is about enjoying all that Fall has to offer, and about celebrating the history of my neighborhood! Brookland turns 125 this weekend, and our neighborhood is celebrating with a grand parade up 12th Street on Saturday morning between Franklin and Michigan Avenue, and then having a community picnic lunch (food provided!) in the park at Turkey Thicket. It’s not every day your neighborhood celebrates its quasquicentennial. Count me in for another good long bike ride on Sunday, with the weather permitting.

Fedward: Wedding? What wedding? Oh, the one two weeks from Sunday? When we’re not trying to solve our cake problems and figure out our rehearsal dinner, the Social Chair and I will distract ourselves with some theatre, namely the opening night of Forum Theatre’s Holly Down in Heaven and the closing weekend of Round House’s Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. And we’ll enjoy one of our last brunches as a non-married couple at the Passenger. Aside from that, it’s 22 days to Puerto Rico!

Joanna: I’ve been wrestling with what to do this weekend, so obviously I have to start at Woolly Mammoth’s wrestle-heavy The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Diety. I’m also excited to head with the throngs to Opera in the Outfield on Saturday night. During the days, the husband and I plan to take the dog to Rock Creek Park for a little early fall wading; and we’ll be cooking and storing up soup for the winter, so hearty recipes welcome. To find the energy for all of that, I’ll probably head over to the Turkish Festival on Sunday for some serious coffee.

Don: With the weather as beautiful as it’s slated to be – small rainstorms be damned – my goal is to spend as much time outdoors as I can manage. The usual destination for us is Roosevelt Island but we’ve recently enjoyed some of the paths off the GW Parkway south of the airport. Perhaps Rock Creek – we’ve never taken the pup there.

We Love Weekends – Sep 21 – 23

Rachel: I’ll be playing one of my last solo acoustic shows of the year this coming Friday at Fireflies in Delray (Alexandria). There’s no cover charge and the splendidly talented Molly Hagen will also be performing. The two of us will be there from 9 – 11 p.m. so feel free to stop by and enjoy the music while grabbing a nosh or a drink. Saturday’s kind of up for grabs. It might be spent at the Navy Yard for a ballgame, not sure yet though. Then comes Sunday when I’ll most definitely be at Nats Park …because why not, right?

Alexia: so many shows, so little time. Thursday night I’m super stoked to see the Make-Up reunion at Black Cat, along with super-sassy favorites of mine openers Coup Sauvage and the Snips! Saturday my mind is blown by how many shows there are going on that I want to see. First, I want to check out GEMS (new band from the duo that brought you Birdlips) opening up the night at Rock & Roll Hotel. Then comes the hard part- dividing myself into three people so I can be at the following places at once (or developing super-speed to race from one to the next) there’s E.D. Sedgwick & Heavy Breathing at Comet Ping Pong, Shark Week at Velvet Lounge (if you haven’t seen these kids yet, do it before they get too big and leave DC in their dust!), and DJ Will Eastman is doing an epic 6-hour DJ set to celebrate the 12th anniversary of his dance night Bliss at U Street Music Hall. I’ll see you on the flipside.

Marissa: Maybe it’s my imagination, but it seems like there are even more festivals happening this autumn. So with that in mind, I plan on heading down to check out the DC State Fair/Barracks Row Fall Festival on Saturday. After that, to mark the first official day of fall I’ll probably wear a sweater, scoop chili into my mouth while cheering for some football game on TV, holding a pumpkin and glancing at the changing leaves outside. Can you tell how excited I am for this season!? Saturday night holds a birthday celebration for two close friends and come Sunday it might be time to channel that enthusiasm into some apple picking.

Tom: I wish to go to the Festival! That is, the Friends of Rhode Island’s Fall Fest on Saturday afternoon, with food from Lace on the Avenue, Rita’s and Taste, there’s going to be some awesome eats, as well as some amazing art from Art Enables, and a great event from DC Brau, as well as the DC Statehood Committee of the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association. Sunday I’ll be focused on the Nationals, as they continue their miracle worst-to-first season against the Brewers. Somewhere in there, I’ll be visiting some of DC’s fine car dealership in search of a sweet new ride.

Natalia: I have fall and food on my mind (what else is new?) Friday I am headed to Elizabeth’s Gone Raw to celebrate the week-end and try my first raw dining experience, which I will share with all of you following. Saturday, I am headed out to Homestead Farm to pick and purchase my weight in apples. With the cooler temps, baking is a must, so I am excited to spend some time reading up on the perfect apple pairings, and mastering the art of pie. Saturday night I am headed to Johnny’s Half Shell for a Texas style crab fest, for the last summer reminder. Sunday, undefined, but maybe Ill give in to learning a bit about Football.

Don: My goal is outdoors, beer, and baseball. All of which should be lovely. Woooooooo Nats!

Fedward: The Social Chair is going shopping for accessories and accoutrements (the top billing for Spanx on that page makes me appreciate my gender prerogative even more than I already did). We’re also headed to KoGiBow for a cake topper. That probably means we should finalize our plans for cake or cake substitutes, huh. When did time start moving so quickly? 29 days to Puerto Rico!

Carl: While Don, Tiff, and the rest of the We Love DC nerds are getting more and more pale, clicking the reload button on the Apple Store website, this weekend I will be getting ready to launch my new book (already available on Kindle). So yeah, I will be getting more pale too. On Saturday I have a funeral to go to as well, and on Sunday I will be slipping into a corset or tights or something before going to the Renaissance Festival with Beautiful Fiancee. I also plan to get back to homebrewing after a hiatus, which reminds me – what beer is good for a spring wedding? I see one of those in my future. Let a brother know.

Rebecca: Friday I’ll be chillin like a villain in Glover Park checking out the newly opened Slate and Mayfair & Pine. Saturday morning WAWSL soccer kicks off early after which I’ll be heading over to the H Street Festival to catch some culture, urban fun, awesome food and spend the day outside. Saturday night I’ll likely stick to H Street and hit up the Star and Shamrock, Sticky Rice and The Rock and Roll Hotel. Filling out my weekend, Sunday will be bottomless mimosas at Scion in Dupont.

We Love Weekends – Sep 7 – 9

Marissa: After a bunch of time out of town, I’m ready to get reacquainted with the district. I’ll be browsing through what’s showing this weekend in the DC Shorts Film Festival, and then finding some time to stop by the freshly opened Union Market. Come Sunday, some friends and I are planning on checking out the sights and sounds at the annual Adams Morgan Day Festival. If I’m lucky, I’ll sneak a good brunch in there somewhere.

Tom: Weekend again?! Already?! Awesome!! After last weekend’s successful group of parties for the Doctor Who premiere and Labor Day Weekend, look for a low-and-slow sort of weekend. Part of me is thinking it might be good to try out last year’s course for the WABA 50 States ride or maybe start looking at The Seagull Century as a potential longer rides to stretch my legs. I’m also looking forward to some time at either American Ice Company or Boundary Stone DC to enjoy my favorite spots in the city. My beloved 49ers start the season this weekend, also, so look for me out at one DC’s finer sports bars with my Jerry Rice jersey on.

Nicole: I’ll be in Chicago this weekend for a wedding (including attending my first-ever bachelorette party), but I’ll tell you exactly what I would do if I were here in DC. I would definitely not miss Fashion’s Night Out in Georgetown. There’s so much free food it’s like college all over again, only with more tiny cupcakes. Fewer tiny cupcakes but still awesome? The new American Trail exhibit at the National Zoo. Between that and the cheetah cubs, I would definitely be planning a visit this weekend. Oh, and I would hang the pictures I said I was going to hang last weekend. Sue me.

We Love Weekends – Aug 31 – Sep 3

Yep, I’m counting Monday in there too – it’s a long weekend for most of us (and you should expect us here at We Love DC to push our usual weekly items out a day as well) and we’re going to grab hold and enjoy it as best we can.

Nicole: In an exciting addition to last weekend’s activities, I went to Ikea and subsequently stayed up until 4am framing things, including some fantastic photos by Claude Taylor and photo collages by Matthew Parker. But this weekend I’m taking it to the next level and hanging everything after a trip to Ace hardware. Saturday night I will be celebrating my best friend’s birthday all over Dupont Circle. Look for us at Buffalo Billiards, Lucky Bar and anywhere that will serve food after 1am. I’ll be the one in the cute dress with the Band-Aids on all her fingers.  Continue reading

Rachel: Really looking forward to this weekend. Friday will be a much needed night IN before the rest of the weekend goes down. Saturday will be tail gating at Jiffy Lube Live for the Brad Paisley concert. Needless to say, I’m pretty pumped for that. Then Sunday I’m hitting up the Bud Light Lime Pool Party at the Capitol Skyline Hotel. (PS – Who says Klout isn’t good for anything … ‘cuz my access to this event is strictly due to a Klout perk … LOVE IT!) That’ll be followed by shared bill with fellow DC songwriter Nita Chawla at Bossa Bistro and Lounge in Adams Morgan. Music starts at 8 p.m. We’d love to see you there!

Mosley: I’m going to be Mr. Lame this weekend and get the last of my packing down for moving out of my apartment early next week.  But if I had the time, I’d love to take advantage of this awesome late September weather we’re having.  Maybe take a walk to the Arboretum and see the Capitol Columns; or walk up the Rock Creek Park trail; or finally checking out the Boundary Stones.  All things I’ll have to wait for until next week, before I head off on my trip.

Nicole: I’m hoping to make my honest weekends a signature thing, so I’ll be straight with you again: I am taking a long weekend, and I am going to spend it studying for the GMAT. Saturday morning will be the highlight – it’s DCPS Beautification Day, and I’ll be volunteering with the Caps at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. But you can’t keep a party girl down! Saturday night I will be hitting it hard, demolishing all challengers at Apples to Apples, Taboo, and a very complicated version of charades I am happy to introduce you to (and subsequently beat you at.)

Fedward: We’re taking advantage of the National Building Museum’s late Thursday hours to get ahead of our weekend with some mini golf. Friday night the Social Chair has plans, so I might go console myself at Fiola with one of Jeff Faile’s famous Negroni variants (remember: we knew him when). Saturday we’re babysitting so the Eldest Niece of the Social Chair can have a birthday party. Sunday we’ll finish the weekend with our traditional brunch at the Passenger.

Don: Music, drinks, puppies and code, oh my. I’m starting off the weekend early Friday evening at The Yards to see our own John Athayde in his superhero evening identity as part of Juniper Lane. How many concerts can you take your dog to, after all? Then I’ll bolt down the street to try to join a friend and valued colleague for his going-away shindig. The plans beyond that are sketchy, though they’re going to be heavily biased towards the out-of-doors, given the lovely early fall weather we’re having. Except to the extent that computer obligations will tie me to my laptop. Maybe I’ll find a nice patio…

It’s the weekend and we couldn’t be happier. Well, if someone cancels Monday, maybe, but for the moment we’ll take em as we get them. That means baseball, booze, and indulging my silly sense of humor about tv character names.

You’ll get it or you won’t. I ain’t claiming it’s genius; I’m just tried of running the came Comet Ping Pong picture over and over again. Take some others and put em in the WLDC Flickr pool, wouldja?

Mosley: Movies and baseball are my plans this weekend. Saturday night is the 500th President’s Race at Nationals Park…oh yeah, and the Nationals are playing the Mets (guess it’s a side show or something). I’m either going to see Teddy’s 500th defeat or his first win, so it should be a banner evening. On the movie front, there are two possibilities at E Street to see a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yeah. And then on Sunday, at the AFI in Silver Spring, is the great Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; I’m always a sucker for the underrated movie in a long running franchise.

Alexia: What else, but a weekend of rock? Friday night heading to Black Cat for a sweet night of indie-rock with Lorelei (their album release party), Deathfix and Sun Wolf! So stoked! Saturday night heading to Comet Ping Pong to see the shoegazer-tinged stylings of Silo Halo, Motion Lines, and Deep Time, and shake it to the soul DJ delights of DJ Names Names (Ian Svenonius). Yeah!

Tom: Let me entertain you! Actually let me entertain our out of town guest by doing a sweet beer tour of DC. We’re first up at DC Brau on Saturday at midday, sampling some good food and beer, and then touring over to Chocolate City Brewing before we head over to Meridian Pint for more beers. Safe to say I need to get my work in on the trails ahead of that! Sunday I’ll be heading out into the country in search of the best sweet corn and the last beautiful fresh peaches of the long hot summer.

Nicole: I can’t comprehend how any child of the ’90s could miss the Third Eye Blind concert following Saturday’s Nationals-Mets game, so needless to say, I will be there. I also plan to spend a sizable amount of time this weekend doing the following really cool things that probably will not get my update published on WLDC: helping my friend move into a new apartment in the hopes of earning free pizza, doing an embarrassing amount of planning for my upcoming fantasy football drafts, reading Simon Rich’s Elliot Allagash and Steven Johnson’s The Ghost Map, and listening to the amazing new Pandora station I created based on the Faith Hill-Tim McGraw duet “I Need You” until my roommates beg me to stop.

Don: Like Tom, we have an out-of-town guest to show around this weekend. We may go a little farther afield, though, and head to the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard. They’re having a dog-focused event, and we either integrate our boy into our weekend plans or we’re only out of the house in four-hour increments. So booze and leash it is… presuming the weather cooperates. Beyond that it’s likely the usual monuments and museums, though it’s always possible we’ll take a few moments to finally catch the Batman movie in IMAX while we’re there…

Marissa: August is just running away from me, and I’m doing everything I can to keep up and make the most of these fleeting summer weekends. Friday it’s time for a little jazz in the garden as the season winds down. Come Saturday, I’m taking an inaugural trip to Ray’s the Steaks for a giant steak that has had my mouth watering since Tuesday. Then Sunday afternoon, I’ll be heading out to FedEx Field for the Brothers of the Sun Tour with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. Cannot wait for all the country music that will be pouring into my ears!

Free Pussy Riot

Alexia: Friday two important events are happening, and you can go to both! First, a Solidarity Concert for Pussy Riot is happening outside of the Russian Embassy, starting at 5:15pm, featuring the music of Brenda, Mobius Strip, Sad Bones, and War on Women. Then, at 10pm Shark Week is having an EP release party, sure to be epic, at Montserrat House. Joining them for the fun will be Jeremy Teter and BROS (formerly BROADS). I suggest getting tickets in advance for this one, it’s gonna sell out. Saturday I’ll be doing some time in the recording studio, working on a fun project, but if I get out in time you may find me shaking it at Hot In Herre, a dance party at the 930 club hosted by Will Eastman, featuring jams from the 2000s.

So it’s the weekend soon and the We Love DC writers are planning outings involving music, food, booze, and baseball. Shocking, I know, but the devil’s in the details. Which are below. You didn’t think we’d keep it a secret, did  you?

Rachel: This weekend will be one of good friends, live music, and Nationals baseball all starting with drinks at Iron Horse on Friday night to celebrate a friend’s new beginning. Can’t be out too late though! I’ve got a hot date with The Fashion District Stage as a performer at the MidCity Dog Days street festival down around the U Street area at 1 p.m. Listen Local First DC rallied all the performance artists for the festival and there are some great local names on the bill for both Saturday and Sunday so be sure to checkout the listing’s on their webpage for who’s on which stage and when. Then it’s back to Nats Park on Sunday for Michael Morse Bobblehead Day aka the Nats vs the Marlins for some day baseball at 1:35 p.m.

Mosley: To paraphrase: “SPACEBALLS!!!  Of crap; there goes the AFI on Saturday.”  Other than that I’m hoping to try to do some museum going this weekend.  I’d like to get back over to the American Art Museum to see the Art of Video Games exhibit again.  And I still haven’t tried my hand at the National Building Museum’s Mini Golf course.  Both are things I want to do before the end of the summer.

Tom: Bring me your finest weekend, DC! I’ll start Friday by catching the Nats doubleheader against the Marlins, hopefully, after an afternoon strategy session on the upcoming redesign of our beloved site at Boundary Stone. I’m hoping to find some lane-swimming time at Turkey Thicket Rec Center, as well as a stock-up trip to the Wegmans, as our house is desperately short on standard provisions.

Marissa: So few summer weekends left, so much to accomplish. It’s the MidCity Dog Days this weekend, so I plan on checking out all the good sales that are happening over on 14th street, specifically the Studio Theatre Garage Sale. Then Saturday night I’m headed out to Clyde’s Willow Creek Farm for their 10th Annual Slow Food Dinner. No, that doesn’t mean waiters serve food in slow motion. Rather, the slow food movement pays homage to the heritage, traditions and culture behind good food. Come Sunday it’s time to take it easy before a whirlwind trip up north to New York City to see some of our best and brightest chefs cook at the James Beard House. Stay tuned for that post and a zillion photos that will accompany it!

Fedward: My big weekend plans are for the Rickey Month party at Jack Rose. Despite having eleven stamps on my passport I’ve only tried three of the finalists, so this will be a good chance for me to catch up.

Don: My weekend starts promptly after work on Friday. My darling wife and I are off to Arlington’s Lubber Run Amphitheater for one of their free Summer concert events. This Friday it’s Juniper Lane, the band that’s 20% We Love DC designer extraordinaire John Athayde and 99% awesome. (I’m inclined to say they’re 100% awesome but I want to leave them some room for aspiration, you know?) I’d like to finally get out to one of Studio Theater’s garage sales but we’ll see how that actually works out. Ditto for Sunday night’s Rickey shindig.

How can we be in the last weekend in July already? Who moved my clock forward? Surely that’s why this feature is showing up on a Friday, not because of heat-addled brain! Oh well. Here’s how we’re going to say goodbye to the 7th month. How about you?

Jenn: So close. This weekend marks the end of weeks of medication for my heart ailment (sounds so Victorian, swoon). The practical side of me will continue to take it easy out of the danger zone, but the virtual side would be out and about like crazy. There’s tons to do and I’ve missed so much already! Fringe wraps up over the next few days, with plenty drama yet to see (I’m hoping to head to The Extermination Machine at DCAC). Of course even with many bartenders out of town for Tales of the Cocktail in NOLA (damn, I wish), there are still drinks to toss back. The lively folks at Drink the District are bringing you over 40 beers in two sessions over on New York Avenue on Saturday ($30 online/$40 at the event/$10 designated driver). It’s geared towards millennials who love great beer but don’t have a lot of cash to get introduced to new brews. Full pours will be available for domestic beer, with tastings for craft beer. Saturday also sees the launch of Season of Discovery at the historic St. Elizabeth’s, with a farmers’ market and all sorts of fun entertainment. Sunday I’d enjoy some of the best local bellydancers in DC Tribal Cafe’s monthly event at Mellow Mushroom in Adams Morgan, before crossing the river to see We Love DC’s own Alexia perform with The Torches at the Galaxy Hut. Whew. Here’s to getting healthy again!

Marissa: I’ve got not one, but TWO old roommates in town, so my weekend plans will likely turn into catching up over cocktails. Friday after work, I’m hoping to unwind to a little country music at the South on South Capitol concert down at the Fairgrounds. Saturday night I’m heading to the Howard Theatre to catch chef Marcus Samuelsson speak about his new book, Yes, Chef. Come Sunday, it’s time for some R&R before gearing up for another busy week.

Tom: Weekend? Oh God, I get a weekend! This is the weekend I’m finally going to pull the trigger and go get a new a bicycle, so look for me out on the town riding like a fool. You’ll know me by the “wheeeeeeee” you hear as I cycle by. Add in some rug shopping and maybe a trip to Ikea for cheap furni, and you’ve got a pretty solid weekend. Also included will be a first trip to the Brixton.

Alexia: Weekend of rock, weekend of rock! If all goes according to plan I’ll be starting the rock tonight at Fort Reno to see Mobius Strip, More Humans, and Grammar. Friday night I hope to make it over to Comet Ping Pong for Natural ChildThe Doozies, and Birdcloud. Saturday hope to make it to an evening of music and poetry featuring the music of Chaim Rubenstein, at The Loft above City Bikes in Adams Morgan. Sunday I’m playing a show with my band The Torches and our labelmates A Lull at one of our very favorite haunts, Galaxy Hut! Come out and party with us!!

Fedward: Friday we’re seeing Young Jean Lee’sChurch, produced by Forum Theatre as part of the Over the Line Festival (here’s Patrick’s review). Sunday features brunch at Brixton followed by … brunch at the Passenger, as long as the latter has reopened after the renovations happening during Tales of the Cocktail. In between, we’re spending Saturday afternoon with some friends in Virginia for ribs, and no, you’re not invited to that.

It’s the weekend again and this time we may not all feel like we’ve put under the broiler. Sure, it’s hard to wrap your head around the idea that a chance of showers and high of 80 is something to be excited about but that’s what we’ve come to. Gather ye rosebuds when ye may do so without heatstroke, I think that’s how it goes. What does our staff have planned? You’ll be shocked to know it includes some baseball and theater.

Mosley: Friday. Dark Knight Rises. Uptown Theater.  Enough said.  Saturday I’m hoping to get out of the apartment to finally get a day of street photography in; the heat has been keeping me in doors.  I’m use to hot summers around here, but this year is just killing any desire to be outside!  Don’t know where I’ll go but hopefully with a lot of people around.  And then on Sunday I’m going with my family to Nationals game against the Braves; we’re celebrating my dad’s birthday in style on the Club level!

The first is an open house at The Sphinx Club in DC and after a brief appearance there, Beautiful Girlfriend and I will go to a freind’s birthday party at the Ram’s Head Tavern Savage Mill. Saturday I will be catching up on some photography assignments and also have an appointment with someone who wants to be part of my tattoo photo project. I am looking forward to getting back into this project. I also hope to get together that afternoon with Wayan Vota so he can sample my homebrew, especially the kvass I made a few weeks ago. Sunday will be set aside as a day of rest. And gardening. I have lots of garden work to do.

It’s so hot we’re moving slower and you’re getting this entry on Friday instead of our usual Thursday. Addison, after last week’s hicksplosion, has not showed up for weekends. We can only assume he spontaneously combusted. You’re missed, Addison.

Joanna: After having no power for almost a week, I’m hoping to spend a good deal of my weekend sitting next to the air conditioner with a glass of ice and a wireless connection. If and when I venture outside, it will be to see some previews for the Fringe Festival (opening July 12!) and catch the opening of the uber-local exhibition Stocking the Fridge. Since my better half is finally back in town, we’ll also be hitting up The Arlington Civitan Open Air Market for some juice glasses and the Arlington Farmers’ Market for veggies with which to make said juice. It’s weekends time, when your humble managing editor whips pleads with the We Love DC authors to submit their list of trouble they’ll be up to over the weekend. Addison, sadly, was overcome at the prospect of the impending 100 degree heat and only sent in “ERMAHGERD HEATWAVE!”

(Probably said in the voice from the video above)

We presume he’ll be in the news shortly after his arrest for trying to move into one of those coolers full of ice in front of a 7-11. Everyone else put down their super-soakers long enough to turn in the following.

Marissa: I’m kicking off my weekend with a show at the 9:30 Club Friday night. One of my favorite (and not just cause they’re also GWU alums) bands, Jukebox the Ghost is playing and I’ve been listening to their new album, Safe Travels, on repeat for the past two weeks in anticipation. Saturday it’s time to pack up the car and hit the road to Harper’s Ferry Adventure Center where some friends and I are going to go tubing. Can’t wait to kick back and enjoy the lazy river before we head back to DC and grill up a ton of food. Sunday will be spent catching up on errands and maybe I’ll take a trip out to the Baltimore Farmer’s Market, since I’ve heard some good things about the vendors in Charm City.

Fedward: a short notice work trip means my Friday night will be spent on the Acela Express coming back from NYC. Saturday the Social Chair are being showered with booze, by which I mean both that we are receiving liquor and associated products at a stock-the-bar shower, and that there will be an ample supply of drinks at the party itself. I can’t wait to see what our friends have found with the assistance of Joe Riley at the fabulous Ace Beverage. Provided we can make it out of bed Sunday, we’re seeing “The Animals…” at Studio before heading to the Passenger for hangover brunch (which this week could be more aptly named than usual).

Ben R.: I’ll be immersed in hockey all weekend, as it’s time for the 2012 NHL Draft. I actually scored tickets to the draft up in Pittsburgh, so I’ll be perched in the CONSOL Energy Center analyzing the Washington Capitals’ draft choices. If I was in town, I’d make sure to hit NMAI’s Choctaw Days; every year has been spectacular and there’s no reason to think this year would be any less.

Mosley: I feel like a parent, only without any kids: I need a quiet weekend.  To that end, I’m planning on catching up with a bunch of things around my apartment.  But if I had the time to myself, I’d probably hit the wonderfully AC’d museums.  Specifically, the Portrait Gallery has a new exhibit on the War of 1812 (1812: A Nation Emerges), a little remembered war that I really enjoy learning things about.  Other than that, I would absolutely LOVE to go see the Nationals destroy the Orioles this weekend!  I’ve been wanting to go see a game against the O’s for-ev-er, so that I can boo Peter Angelos and show him the fan he lost (it’s the little things in life).  But sadly, getting up to Baltimore is a bridge too far for me.  But still: “GO NATS”!

Marissa: Feeding into my burgeoning shopping addiction, some friends and I are driving out to the Leesburg Outlets to spend an afternoon buying things we may or may not need (What’s that, Le Creuset outlet? I need that 7.5 quart pot in cobalt blue? And perhaps a Michael Kors clutch to match? OKAY!). Sunday morning I plan on getting up early and checking out a Farmer’s Market, though I’m not sure which one yet and am prepared for a little driving adventure. Sunday evening I’ll be getting glammed up and heading off to the RAMMY’s Awards Gala, honoring some of the best in the DC restaurant and bar scene. Follow me on Twitter @bonappetitfoodi for some live-tweeting throughout the awards ceremony.

Natalia: Finally, a weekend in DC for me. I’m going to kick it off by heading to Jazz in the Sculpture Garden on Friday, an ice cold beer and some live music, hello summa summa time. Saturday is scheduled to be beautiful, so headed to Harper’s Ferry for a day of tubing and kayaking. These full day stints require a chill night of good food, good company, and al fresco dining. I’m thinking the rooftop at Masa 14 or Cafe St. Ex patio. Sunday, the We Love DC family is gathering at none other than the Passenger, which means Ill finally get to try their hangover brunch, with a stiff drink in hand. A movie Sunday night at E Street Cinema to distract my thoughts from the imminent work week sounds about right too. All of this weekend activity of course only if I don’t melt along the way.

Huzzard: With the Nationals just up the road in Baltimore I am going to find baseball in a hopeless place as I visit Charm City for two of the three games. On Saturday a friend from out of town will be coming in and we will be making our yearly journey to Pickles Pub where we will drink many $2.50 beers before heading into Camden Yards. Since I got the cheapest possible tickets I could find I will enjoy my view of the warehouse. The fact that the stadium may stand the test of time doesn’t mean the sight lines are any good. Sunday’s game will be much more relaxed, but it may be full of even more excitement as Ross Detwiler will be back on the mound in a starting position for the Nats. All in all it could be a good weekend or a bad weekend, and it all depends on how the hometown nine play in the Old Line State.

Joanna: How much art can one woman see in three days before her brain sizzles and her eyes glue shut? That’s the question I’ll be answering this weekend, starting on Friday night at the Source Festival. As a judge for the 10-minute play category, I’m excited to see which 6 were chosen for the Rites of Passage series. Then I’m off to Artomatic for one last go-around before it closes on Saturday. I’ll also be getting homesick for Madrid at Flamenco Soul, here for one night at The Howard Theatre. It practically requires sangria beforehand on U Street. Sunday I’ll be biking around town, eventually winding up at The Passenger, where food and drink count as art in their own right.

Don: I think it’s home improvement weekend. Which is sort of a bummer since the Capital Weather Gang says the weekend will be less OH GROD OH GROD I’M BURNING PLEASE MAKE IT STOP than yesterday and today has been. But hey, duty calls… duty in this case being prep for hosting a certain couple’s wedding shower. Even if one half of the pair hasn’t written me any more wedding prep stories for the blog lately. *cough* Sunday I’ll spend the hottest part of the day in the dark coolness of the Passenger. We might take the little fuzzy boy to a dog park in-between if we can find one that’s got a good amount of shade.

Marissa: This weekend is a busy one for me. I’m kicking it off a little early with Kimpton’s 2012 Crave party tonight. Come Saturday afternoon, I’m heading to see the New York Yankees face the Washington Nationals. Nothing is more emblematic of summer than a baseball game with friends, chili dogs and some cold beer. Then Sunday it’s off to the Fancy Food Show with more than 180,000 food products from 2,400 exhibitors from 80 countries and regions (phew!). I’ll report back on how that goes next week, so stay tuned.

Don: Another year, another Flag Day party. A party celebrating it – not other things, dammit – is our big weekend event, though we’re going to preface it with playing hooky from work on Friday and floating down Gunpowder Falls. Which is poorly named, based on any of the tubing areas we’ve seen; the only falls are the ones we’ve taken trying to drag our tipsy selves back up the riverbank when we come to the end. Sunday it’s back to indoor activities and basically grown-up behavior with press night for STC’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. Before any of that, however, I’m off to the Black Cat tonight to see the And I Am Not Lying show. I’m a geezer and will be at the 8p show but they’ve added one at 10p if you want to make a last-minute jump for spoken word & burlesque glory.

Tom: This weekend, I’m off galavanting to Canada to commune with the maple leafs and the hockey hall of fame, but in my heart, I’ll be in DC for this weekend’s Tour de Fat at Yards Park with all my favorite New Belgium beers and bicycles, and Sunday is the DC Record Fair, which is always great people watching if you’re like me and don’t own a turntable. My garden has begun to take shape, but I need to get down to Frager’s for some more dirt & mulch, but since they deliver, maybe I can just call them?

Fedward: I’m with Don. Literally. Friday after the tubing adventure I plan to go see one of the best live bands in the world, Brave Combo, at The State Theatre. After Saturday’s Flag Day party I plan to head to the Destroyer show at the 9:30. And Sunday we’ll hit the Passenger for our usual hangover brunch.

Carl: Friday night I will be spending time with Beautiful Girlfriend and will probably take her to a nice dinner somewhere in downtown Silver Spring. Saturday I will be working on a nice amber ale I have been commissioned to make for an upcoming picnic and then will be bringing my Pants-Optional Pilsner to Don‘s house for his birthday. He and Darling Wife have insisted that the party not be pants-optional, though. Bummer. On Sunday my big mission is to sit in the sun and drink whatever Don doesn’t finish on Saturday.

Alexia: starting my weekend of rock (what else?) tonight, playing a show with my band The Torches at Rock & Roll Hotel. Also on the bill: Get a Tan, Shy Violet, and Recons. Come on out! Friday night heading to Artomatic (my 3rd trip there this season) for the amazing, soul-explosion that is Coup Sauvage & the Snips. They’re hosting a variety show, and if their dance-spectacle/extravaganza of a show at Comet Ping Pong a couple weeks ago is any indication, it’s gonna be a blast! Saturday night heading to one of the coolest venues in town, Comet Ping Pong, for Roanoke sweeties/dream-pop Eternal Summers. Oh yeah! Sunday, if I’m still standing, I’ll be heading over to the Black Cat for the Ladies-only intro to DJing workshop, hosted by K La Rock & Junebullet. What a weekend!!! Summer of rock!

If you’ve been lucky, like me, the week has flown by and you’re surprised to be thinking about your weekend already. If you’re unlucky and it seems like a decade since that lazy Sunday evening, well, at least you have something to look forward to. Eventually. Weather should be nice, if a bit warm – though Capital Weather points out that we’ve got nothing to complain about compared to this time last year – so maybe some outdoors are in your future. I know they are in mine.

Tom: I’m ready for summer! This week at BicycleSPACE I took the clipless plunge, so I’ll be giving my bike a workout this weekend, possibly up the Custis Trail through Arlington. It’s also the first week of CSA shares at our farm, so we’ll be trekking out to Bluemont for our first box. But, before we even get there, I have to find something special for Tiffany, whom I married 6 years ago this Monday. Happy Anniversary sweetie!

Huzzard: This weekend I could do something fun and exciting, but more than likely I will just lazy around and do a bunch of nothing. Those can be the best weekends but I do have some absurd streak of having watched live baseball every weekend this season so far and all of last season. With SoMd in town that can continue, or I can just go see Prometheus and call it a lazy summer weekend of relaxation.

Rebecca: My weekends continue to be about R&R, which involves sleeping, eating locally-sourced foods and trying to get some sort of sun-kissed base for my pasty anglo body. Friday I’m off to the Strathmore for a live-recording of NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! for a special show highlighting the quirks and embarrassments of political leaders throughout history. As I listen to this show pretty much every weekend I’m pumped to see it live. Tickets are still available! Saturday, I’ll hit up the Glover Park-Burleith Farmer’s Market, as I do every Saturday, to replenish my stores. My go-to this season has been Spriggs Delight Farm’s feta cheese which is NOM NOM in salads, scrambled eggs, etc. Sunday, I’ll be chilling out pool side Volta Park Pool.

Patrick: Besides a couple of parties this weekend (I’m so popular), I plan checking out Suicide, Inc over at No Rules Theatre on H Street tomorrow. I suspect I’ll do my usual routine of going out for all my meals. This weekend I have the urge for some crabs. I suspect a trip to The Quarterdeck maybe in the cards.

Addison: Since apparently a week in the Caribbean sun wasn’t enough time to get me some semblance of a tan, I shall have to head back out into the sunshine this weekend to remedy that situation. Friday is my buddy’s birthday and to celebrate we will be hanging out on the patio at Jay’s Saloon in Arlington. Saturday I will be out on the water in Baltimore rowing in the Charm City Sprints with Capital Rowing Club. Saturday night depends on how exhausted I am, but the Russian Machine Never Breaks party at Front Page in Ballston seems like a good option. More fun in the sun on Sunday as the spring kickball season winds down on the National Mall.

JCM: I’m starting off the weekend with a Guinness at Four Provinces in Arlington and ending the weekend with a Guinness at home on the roof. In between I’ll hit up the Arlington Farmer’s Market at Courthouse before I head out – way out – to Sterling, VA, for a BBQ with the fam. My goal is to purchase every bite for the week from the market, so hopefully I can resist spending my whole budget on cheese curds. On Sunday an iced coffee at Eastern Market should help with the predicted heat. Then after catching up on some work, I’ll be heading to Studio Theatre to expand my weirdness threshold with The Animals and Children Took to the Streets. And finally that second, long-awaited Guinness.

Don: My darling wife and I are getting a brief break in our visiting family parade so we’re going to do some couple things for as long as the peace and quiet lasts. Well, couple plus pup. Saturday will have some dog park and sidewalk cafe breakfast time at a to-be-determined location – anyone have a favorite pairing? Sunday evening has some BBQ time with some other couples. My most anticipated event is actually next Thursday evening, when the And I Am Not Lying show will be at the Black Cat. I missed it last year so I’m excited to take Jeff an iced espresso (Nobody tell Nick Cho) and see this combination of burlesque and spoken word.

Nicole: It’s Capital Pride weekend! I’ll be joining the throngs down by Dupont Circle for Saturday’s parade, then will visit the Capital Pride Festival on Sunday. My friends and I will retreat to Rock Creek Park to picnic before heading back downtown and wrapping up the weekend with Kristen Chenoweth’s concert at DAR Constitution Hall.

Mosley: Got a business trip to the West Coast this weekend, so no fun for me.  But if I were to have the time to myself, I’d go to Artomatic Saturday night for the Meet the Artist Night.  There is so much excellent work of artists that I’d love to meet, that I’m kinda bummed I’m going to miss it.  Also happening Saturday at Artomatic is the Art-to-Go Marketplace where you can buy some of the work.

Alexia: starting my weekend of rock off tonight with Typefighter and Ugly Purple Sweater at the Black Cat! Saturday hope to get some chill time at my friend’s pool during the day, and then heading over to Comet Ping Pong in the evening for some shaking of tailfeathers with Coup Sauvage & The Snips and Chain and The Gang. Sunday morning starting my day with a recording session at my friend Greg’s studio, and evening brings one of my favorite bands of all-time Radiohead to the Verizon Center!

Marissa: A regular, two-day weekend after a holiday weekend always leaves me feeling jipped. But aside from trying to make the most of my hours outside of a cubicle by lounging at the pool and barbecuing for some friends, I’m planning on taking advantage of the free summer Saturdays at the Corcoran. Then Sunday, it’s off to see Jiro Dreams of Sushi at West End Cinema, since so many friends have been raving about it. And if there’s time, I’ll try to sneak in a bowl of ramen at the newly opened Sakuramen in Adams Morgan.

Natalia: I am loving this weather, so plan on spending every waking moment in some kind of outdoor activity. On Friday, I want to check out the new rooftop at Masa 14– margaritas and bao buns galore. On Saturday Ill head over to Georgetown and check out this year’s Taste of Georgetown event- a food and wine festival to support the homeless, if it gets too hot head into the Blues Alley for some jazz and wine pairings. Sunday, some spring cleaning and then headed to The National Gallery to check out Joan Miro’s exhibit and Jose Andres’ Garden Cafe Catalonia.

Fedward: This weekend the Social Chair and I are babysitting her niecelets. That means for the bulk of the weekend we’re limited to activities appropriate for the under-6 crowd. Maybe a trip to the pool, possibly a trip up to Colesville for the National Capital Trolley Museum, maybe a standard diversion to Glen Echo Park, or possibly even just a walk from their home in Mt. Pleasant to the zoo. With the Social Chair’s schedule I’m going to be a single “uncle” for part of the weekend, so if you see a tall bald guy with two blond moppets, say hi.

Tom: It’s a farm weekend! Sunday we’ll head out to the boonies to get our first week of CSA produce and sit on the deck at Bluemont Vineyards and plan something interesting. But before that we’ll head out Friday night, weather depending, to watch the Nationals face off with the Braves. Going into the weekend, they’re still the First Place Nationals, but the Braves will be looking for payback after the sweep.  I’m also planning to hit the H Street Farmers’ Market which is expanding this weekend after record demand. Just call me a gentrifier already, because I’m also planning to do some bike riding on Saturday morning, that is if I’m not headed for the Capital Jazzfest at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Don: I’m about ready to wander the streets looking for someone to piñata (hit till candy falls out) so I’m all about the unwinding this weekend. I’m going to find somewhere to sit with a cold beer and watch tomorrow’s ugly weather then it’s all up for grabs. A scheduling issue kept me from going to press night for the GenX-nostaligia-fest that is Signature Theater’s Xanadu (don’t laugh (or do, whatever, I loved that movie when I was 8)) so perhaps I’ll catch up with it or maybe Servant of Two Masters, based on Jenn’s recommendation. Artomatic is always a possibility, though I tend to prefer slightly less crowded weekday nights.

Rachel: I’ve been waiting for this weekend for what feels like forever and I AM STOKED! My weekend begins early with a Thursday night performance at Iota Club & Cafe in Arlington where I’ll be performing as part of “Fleetwood Mac” during the Classic Albums 1977 concert. We’ll be kicking off the entire show at 8:30 p.m. and admission will be $12 at the door. Can’t wait to sing “Songbird,” it’s one of my favorite songs of all-time. My little sister’s coming to town on Friday to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in the Nation’s Capital so it’ll be nice to show her around town. Then, Saturday night’s what I’ve been looking forward to all week. I’ll be playing DC9 for the first time with a full band while sharing the stage with DC’s own The Grey Area and my old friends Filligar. It’s an early show and music starts with my band at 8 p.m. sharp (admission is $8 at the door). This is Filligar’s last show before going on tour with Counting Crows in June (they’ll be at Wolf Trap on June 20, FYI), so if you wanna catch ’em before they make it big then I’d strongly suggest stopping by DC9 on Saturday night. The rest of the weekend will be rounded out with BBQ’s and time outside — just how it should be.

Marissa: The thought of the start of summer this weekend makes my limbs tingle in excitement (and anticipation of potential sunburns). Friday, I’ll be heading to the first of the Jazz in the Sculpture Garden. Afterwards, it’s over to New York Avenue Beach Bar, provided they’re fully open and operating. Litterbox, you say? Whatevs. Can’t a girl enjoy the feeling of sand between her toes while remaining in the city limits? Saturday will include lots of grilling with some friends and then Sunday I plan to catch some of Artomatic.

Don: Apparently job one will be sweating – a projected high of 91 is going to make for a muggy day, given how damp everything is after this week’s rain – but I will be out in it even if I have to sit under the hose. Which would be an ironic way to celebrate the end of the rain but I contain multitudes. For some indoor relief I might try to catch STC’s Servant of Two Masters (if I can take the pain from laughing which Joanna promises is part of the package) and perhaps a little late-Sunday funk at U St. Music Hall for Afrika Bambaataa and All Good Funk Alliance. If anyone’s gonna get funked up it may as well be me.

Fedward: I haven’t had a complete day off in a couple weeks, and this three day weekend will be no exception. This weekend is our last chance to see the Unbuilt Washington exhibit at the National Building Museum, and we’ve been talking about it since before it opened, so I guess that means we have to go there. Sunday night we’ll be at Studio Theatre for the opening of Bachelorette. After a Big Work Thing today and tomorrow, though, the highlight of my weekend will be the opening of the new New York Ave Beach Bar. Look for me there with my feet up and a can of cold beer in my hand.

If you needed more evidence that the rain has stopped and people have bolted out into the sunshine you could base it on the dearth of weekends entries our authors have submitted. (I’m not counting the fat-fingered “M OUT IN SUN & NOT COMIN BACK SUCKER THERE’S UR WEEKEND ENTRY LOL” smartphone-submitted messages as entries.) Some of us are stuck in the office, though, and have penned these expansive wishes for the sweet release of death Friday. Continue reading
