Be Exhibited At Arlington Arts Center

For all local artists out there, tomorrow is your last chance to enter for a spot to be featured in a solo exhibit at the Arlington Arts Center.

Artists who “produce cutting edge contemporary art in any/all media, and who live or work in Virginia; Washington, DC; Maryland; West Virginia; Delaware; or Pennsylvania” are eligible to submit exhibition proposals.  Furthermore, all work must have been completed within the last 3 years in order to be considered.

The Way We See It

Through their work, artists are able to convey and share their most personal thoughts and feelings with the public.  And the photography exhibit The Way We See It is the perfect example of young photographers doing just so.

The non-profit AED’s Idea: Exchange is a new effort dedicated solely to promote dialogue and communication on social and developmental issues. AED is inaugurating the Idea: Exchange with the photography exhibit The Way We See It: Young Photographers Examine, Define and Change Their World, showcasing the work created by youth from D.C. and around the world who use the art of photography to “reveal their lives, speak out about social issues, and advocate for better public policies”.

Now that is inspiring.

The exhibit will be open Wednesdays through Fridays, June 18th through September 3rd, from 2-7 PM.

The Idea: Exchange is located at the corner of Connecticut Ave and T St, NW.

All Female Art Exhibition

Would you like to support local artists and a local charity all in one night?  Sounds pretty awesome to me.

The Art Registry is hosting an art exhibition and fundraiser to benefit Dress for Success on Thursday evening.  The event will feature seven female artists (six are local) whose work will be up for sale at the event.  Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20, and the cost include hours d’ oeuvres, wine, and of course, the opportunity to help a great cause.

The artists to be featured are: Joey Manlapaz, Anne Marchand, Leah Matthews, Karen Smul, Sandy Wexler, Catherine White, and Shawn Yancy (Fox 5 News Anchor).

The event will be on Thursday from 6-9 PM at the the Kimpton’s Hotel Palomar in Dupont.  For more information call 703-798-8717.

Here’s another edition of our Farm Fresh feature where WeLoveDC authors Donna (greenie) and Katie (foodie) have paired up to tell you about local area restaurants that take on the challenge of being green. Donna explains the restaurant’s environmentally friendly efforts and Katie tells you if the food tastes any good. It’s a rough life, but someone has to do it, right?

Katie: Radius is one of those neighborhood gems that make you feel like you won the jackpot when you discover it. Tucked away on the second floor of an old row house on Mount Pleasant Street in Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant, the little pizzeria is one of my very favorite restaurants in the city. Last April, husband and wife team Todd and Nicole Wiss took over the former Italian eatery and turned it into one of the city’s most eco-conscious restaurants.

Donna: Chef Todd and his Nicole met while working at Poste Moderne Brassiere, which also has a commitment to local and sustainable food. It was there, while directing a James Beard Dinner that Todd became passionate about farm-to-table cooking. “Having eaten this way the majority of my life, I found it really important to make it our goal to create awareness to the diner that this is really important for the sustainability of our land, for future farming, and future generations,” said Todd. And then he shared that other reason: “It tastes a hell of a lot better!”

Activation 2719: Support Local Artists

If you are someone who can’t fathom staying indoors just because of a ‘little’ snow, then perhaps adventuring over to the pop-up gallery called Activation 2719 might just be your perfect excuse to break-out. Activation 2719 is presented by Ready Set DC and No Kings Collective, a DC artist collective that promotes the relationship between area artists and their city, and will be kicking off a two week exhibition on Saturday at 6 p.m. with food from CommonWealth Gastropub and music via DJ Fleg and DJ Tom Lim – with vocals by Sheena Alexis and Bullfight Academy.

The exhibit will continue through February 20th and features the following local artists: Anieken Udofia, Bryan Rojsuontikul, Brandon Hill, Francisco Esteban, Batool Al-Shomrani, Peter Chang, Emily Greene Liddle, Tim “CON” Conlon, DECOY, and James Walker.

Sprout Happy!

To be honest, I never thought of growing sprouts in my kitchen over the winter. But I like the name of this class – “Sprout Happy!” – that will be held in North Bethesda on Saturday morning. And they promise you’ll learn how to grow live, organic food inside for just pennies.

Hmm, houseplants that you (and not just your cat) can eat. This sounds simple and fun.

From Waves to Grain: New Green Flicks

Take a break. Right now, really, and watch the lush, smooth, curling waves on this trailer from BlueGreen. Ahhh, the beach! I can even feel the sand between my toes.

BlueGreen, they say, is a documentary about the human connection to the ocean. That sounds wonderful, and I think I vaguely heard people saying as such on the trailer. But mostly I was mesmerized by the waves and the surfers sliding along them, including stars Keith Malloy, Layne Beachley, and Robert August. Robert “Wingnut” Weaver narrates.

BlueGreen is one of three summer movies with an earth-friendly bent that have screenings around town in the next few days. The next few hot, dog days of summer, that is — days perfect for slipping inside a chilly theater.

Farm Fresh: Charlie Palmer Steak

Katie: Charlie Palmer Steak is situated on the bottom floor of the Carpenter’s Union building, facing the Capitol Reflecting Pool on the Senate side. I’d almost be tempted to call it DC stuffy, if I didn’t love it so much. And love it I do, Charlie Palmer Steak gets top marks in my foodie book. Not only is it gorgeous, the food is fantastic, and the service matches. The entire front of the restaurant is glass, and in the winter I’m sure it has a supurb view of the Capitol Building. An impressive walk-in wine cellar sits above a fountain and water pool full of stones. The servers are inconspicuously attentive. Candles flicker on the table. It is a quiet sort of posh, the perfect place for a business meeting, or a very impressive date. Honestly, it’s the type of place that you wouldn’t quite expect to do locovore meals. It’s a bit too conservative, too buttoned-up. But for all the month of August, through September 12, you can stop by Charlie Palmer to do an incredibly affordable “In the Loop” dinner – all food from within 150 miles of DC for $39 per person, excluding tax and gratuity. Sure, we know that farmers markets bring in fresh, healthy food and allow us to support local farms. But knowing what to buy when we get there is a different story.

How is a white peach different from a yellow one? (It’s sweeter, and sublime.) And what do you do with a rutabaga anyway? (Darned good question.)

Farm Fresh: Poste Moderne Brasserie

Katie: Tucked inside the courtyard of the Hotel Monaco in Penn Quarter, Poste Moderne Brasserie is like a little city oasis. Most of the restaurant activity, at least in the warmer months, revolves around the closed-in patio. Poste’s patio has lots of tables, its own drink bar, a raised stage patio, and then this a little partitioned subsection off to the side with a large marble table situated between rows of herbs. This is the chef’s table.  And Donna and I were at Poste for the exclusive “MARKET TO MARKET” dining experience.

Katie: The concept of the market dinners is simple. Guests take a walk through the Eighth Street Penn Quarter Farmers Market with executive Chef Robert Weland then take a seat at the Chef’s Garden table for a five course tasting menu showcasing local and artisanal products. Our week was a bit different, as Weland was out moving to a new house with his baby (I suppose that’s an acceptable excuse), we were in the capable hands of executive sous chef Jon Nickerson.
