Update as of 12:40 p.m. — The boundaries have been reduced to the following :

  • West Boundary: Western Avenue, NW
  • North Boundary: River Road, NW
  • East Boundary: Connecticut Avenue, NW
  • South Boundary Nebraska Avenue, NW

Original post as of 11:11 a.m. — Northwest Washington needs to watch what they drink today. According to WTOP, residents in parts of NW are being advised not to drink water from the tap due to a higher-than-normal chlorine concentration.

Officials from the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) say that the sudden rise in chlorine levels occurred at its unmanned Fort Reno facility early Tuesday while it was offline for routine maintenance disinfection.

So prompt those taste buds and make use of your sense of smell if you live in NW, there’s no use in crying over dirty water if you’re on the look out for it.

Nats Set Franchise-Low Attendance Record, Stammen Brings The Goods, Nats Win 5-2

The Nationals (7-6) set a franchise low at their home park  last night — the lowest attendance number for a single game (11,623). Those who missed the show due to Caps play-off hockey or chilled temperatures missed Craig Stammen notch his first win yesterday vs the Colorado Rockies (6-7) with a 5-2 game. Stammen threw 100 pitches, 65 for stirkes.

It gets better. Before last night’s victory, the Nats had lost nine straight against the Rockies dating back to August 15, 2008. This is the Nats first win against the Rockies in seven games played at Nationals Park. Good thing they broke the streak since We Love DC will be visiting section 237 Wednesday night.

Stammen wasn’t the only guy doing the dirty work to get the job done. Willie Harris knocked in four of the five runs scored last night, including a three run homer. Pudge has got soaring numbers that continue to grow. Forget his veteran status, the guy’s playing like a true pro. Last night he knocked a couple singles and safely hit in nine of ten games this season. Plus — he’s leading the club in batting average (.450), hits (18), doubles (7) and multi-hit games (6).

Matt Capps also got his sixth consecutive save, giving Washington fans another Caps to go crazy about.

Last year, the Nats didn’t get their seventh win of the season until May 4. So let’s remember, at least we’re off to a good start here. Scott Olsen (0-0, 6.35) and the Nationals take on Jorge De La Rosa (1-1, 2.77) and the Rockies at 7:05 tonight from Nationals Park.

Yesterday, things were kinda tense here on We Love DC. We’re not sure if it was the Armed Tea Party Protestors that are doing their thing over at Gravelly Point, or if it was the Armed Robbers on U Street doing their thing at Nellie’s, but something had people all a-twist yesterday. It’s been a pretty tense week, and I think we could all use a good chaser of cute.

Anyhow, while all that was happening, some cute fuzzy ducklings were being deeply, and abidingdly, cute over at the White House. The pool caught some amazingly cute video of the ducklings struggling to get up the stairs, so we’ve put that behind the cut here. We all need it.

Barber Shop by Give Me a Vote!

While I generally shy away from featuring photos with watermarks, I readily made an exception for this one.  This photo by Joshua Cogan depicts a lot more than an oddly placed giant hand in a barber’s chair.  It’s part of a creative project by Albus Cavus and DC Vote called “Give Me a Vote!”  If you’re a resident of the District then you should be well aware of the fact that we pay taxes just like every other “state” does, yet somehow we lack full congressional representation.  In a country founded on liberty and just for all, one full of promise and Hope, our leaders tend to look the other way when it comes our voting rights.  In an effort to raise awareness, Give Me a Vote! will be placing these big hands across the city to represent our lack of a “voting arm”.  To quote from their website:

“Give Me a Vote! comments on the lack of democratic process available to DC residents. The voting arms represent new hope, and symbolize DC residents requesting the opportunity to practice one of their basic rights as U.S. citizens.  We aim to attract the attention of and promote action from DC residents who support DC democracy.”

You can even take an active part in this project by designing and adopting a sculpture to display in your home or business.  Eventually our collective voice will be heard and one day we’ll have representation just like the rest of the country.  That said, I’m also a fan of the alternative, that is, you keep your vote and we’ll keep our taxes.

Nellie’s Robbed in Broad Daylight

This afternoon at around 1:15pm, a robbery took place at Nellie’s Sports Bar involving the use of a gun.  According to Borderstan, the number of robberies with guns in the area of 12th and U street NW has doubled in the past year.  (Note to self: don’t walk down U street with your camera in plain sight.)  According to the police alert, the robbery involved two black males in a white vehicle of unknown make.  If you have any tips, call 911, and don’t be afraid to Rock the Red tonight at Nellie’s.

Critical Exposure Celebrates 5 Years

One of my favorite DC organizations, Critical Exposure, is celebrating the amazing work that their kids have done since their founding in 2004.  By arming the youth of our city with cameras, we’re able to see our world through their eyes, which is always an enlightening experience.

By empowering young people to develop skills as documentary photographers and advocates, we expose citizens and policymakers to the realities of our current two-tiered education system as seen through the eyes of the students who confront those realities each day.  Through this approach Critical Exposure works to secure policy changes in order to ensure that all children have access to an excellent, equitable public education, fulfilling this nation’s promise of providing all children with an opportunity to succeed.

The exhibit, titled “5 Years, 5,000 Images”, is on display until April 30th at the Edison Place Gallery.  The organization would love your donation, and $35 buys you a ticket to the opening reception on Thursday April 22nd.  A small amount for such a great cause.

What is the best way to teach the daily struggles of family life and change to a modern generation: physical comedy or unadulterated sincerity? Harvey Fierstein’s Tevye does both. On the other hand … he has some competition what with the starlet vocals of his three daughters in-production. On the other hand … he’s Harvey Fierstein, part of the reason this run of Fiddler on the Roof at the National Theatre has been so successful.

Fierstein first starred as Tevye during the critically acclaimed Broadway revival, having previously won four Tony Awards, including Best Play and Best Actor in a Play for Torch Song Trilogy, with his most recent win in 2003 for Best Actor in a Musical for Hairspray. Now, he’s filling seats for sold-out crowds of all-ages at the National Theatre, reprising the role as Tevye and doing justice to the name while still maintaining his sense of self on stage. District takes over United Medical Center

DC Government announced last week that it is taking over United Medical Center in Southeast from Specialty Hospitals, the group that has run the hospital since 2007 under a combination of grant and loan from the District. While the hospital itself is economically viable after a series of facilities and equipment upgrades and changes to Medicaid reimbursements, Specialty Hospitals itself is in some financial troubles and hadn’t been making the payments to the District. So, it’s like a foreclosure except the hospital gets to stay open.

DC Omni 100: #71 Gazpacho

It’s time for another item on the DC Omnivore 100 list of the top one hundred foods every good omnivore should try at least once in their lives.

With warm weather hitting the area, palates and appetites turn from stews and comfort food to lighter, refreshing dishes in an effort to cool off during the summer. Gazpacho, a cold liquid salad, originating from Andalusia, the southern most region of Spain, is a thirst-quenching option that should definitely be on everyone’s mind.

Typically, Gazpacho includes hard bread, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, garlic, olive oil, vinegar of wine, onion and salt. However, there are many modern variations of gazpacho, often in different colors and omitting the tomatoes and bread in favor of avocados, cucumbers, parsley, watermelon, grapes, meat stock, seafood, and other ingredients.

A good gazpacho’s viscosity should be a tad short of a thick tomato sauce and the ingredients should be completely blended. And in my opinion, there’s nothing worse than getting a gazpacho that’s watery and filled with cubed peppers.  This should be a substantive, cold soup. Continue reading →

Funding for the Arts to See Cuts

When times are tough and governments start cutting their budgets, arts programs are often the first to feel the pain.  Case in point, Arlington County is planning on cutting arts grants by 36% next year, an equivalent of $100,000, while DC is proposing a 10% or $1 million cut (PDF) to its operating budget.  As a patron of the arts, this isn’t something I like to hear about, but understand that other spending generally takes precedence over the arts.  Susan Kalish of Arlington County’s parks and recreation department says, “Arts or cops? The county’s got to make a tough decision.”

My hope is that as the economy improves in the years to come, arts funding will go back up.  If you’d like to speak your mind about the arts budget cuts in DC, stop by to testify at the budget hearing for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities on April 27th at 10AM.

Sean Taylor’s Locker Moves to FedEx Field

The memory of Sean Taylor will continue to be preserved by the Washington Redskins.

It was announced on Friday that Taylor’s locker will be removed from the Redskins Park training facility to FedEx Field where it will be put on public display. General manager Bruce Allen told The Washington Times that he realizes how much Taylor meant to the fans and that the team is “happy to be able to share this with them.”

There is only one foreseen problem with the move: fan access to the display. It appears that the Redskins will be placing the display to the Club A tower of FedEx Field, where club-level only ticket holders will be able to view the locker on game days, and not the everyday-fan.

Team officials say that fans will be able to visit the locker during other events and during stadium tours. This might be something that fans bring up to the Redskins front office about preserving Taylor’s memory.

National Day of Service and Remembrance for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing and President Obama called on Americans to “pause to remember victims of terrorism both at home and abroad, we honor the heroes who have supported them, and we redouble our efforts to build the kind of world that is worthy of their legacy.”

Flags across the nation will be flying at half-staff and in his proclamation, the President reminds us to “observe this solemn day of remembrance with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and acts of community service in memory of the victims and survivors of terrorism worldwide.”

Star and Shamrock Opens to Fulfill Both Your Irish Pub And Kosher Deli Needs

Perhaps there has been a moment in these last few weeks when you’ve though, “Where in this fair town can I grab both a pint of Guinness at a nice pub as well as a bowl of Matzo Ball soup?” Sure, there are more than a fair share of Irish bars in most of the District neighborhoods; similarly, while maybe a little more challenging to find, there is good deli somewhere that will quench your thirst for some Jewish penicillin. Tackling both at the same time? Definitely a challenge.

The good news is that your quest will no longer take multiple visits, thanks to the The Star and The Shamrock Tavern and Deli, H. St’s newest addition. The menu reads like that of a New York deli – fresh sandwiches on rye bread, knishes, wursts and Chicken Liver – with the added joy of a full Irish beer list to meet your pub drinking needs. Like any good kosher deli, you can grab a Doc Brown’s Soda with your Reuben, or you could pick from any of 12 drafts and 22 bottled beers (including the wonderfully punny He’brew line).

Whether you haunt the pub circuit or just want a little taste of that New York deli tradition, it sounds like you can’t go wrong at Star and Shamrock.

Armed Protesters

If you happen to see a group of armed Tea Baggers in Virginia tomorrow, don’t be alarmed! It’s merely a group of patriots(tm) attempting to make some sort of statement against big government by carrying firearms, which symbolizes something. A coalition of militias and gun rights groups that are ticked about, amongst other things, health care reform and bailouts, are strapping on and gathering tomorrow at Gravelly Point on the Virginia side of the Potomac, the closest place to DC that they can openly carry. They aim to make history by holding the first armed protest in a national park, and are in no way attempting intimidate political opponents by brandishing weapons as they protest the “erosion of the Constitution.”  In fact, they see bearing arms as a form of mainstream political dialogue, a right granted to them by the Constitution, along with the right to peaceably assemble. Why you’d need weapons at a peaceful protest hasn’t quite been hashed out, but supposedly the group has a rationale.  But really, I’m not here to tell you about it.  I just don’t want you to freak out if you see guys with guns shouting angrily in the direction of the Capitol. They’re just fighting for our rights.
