Nationals
Record: 3-3
Last Two Weeks: 3-3
Place: 4th in the NL East

After a rough start against Philly, the Nats have rebounded well, taking 2 of 3 from the Mets.  The Nats sent down Garrett Mock, and placed Mike Morse on the DL after rough starts for both of them.  Mock will spend the next several starts in AAA Syracuse being reminded that perhaps it’s a good idea not to walk five batters in your first 3 1/3. Scott Olsen will be coming up to take his spot in the rotation this week.

The Nats head down to Philadelphia for three games, and hopefully there will be some payback for the whupping we got in Washington to open the season. After that, it’s a 9-game homestand at Nats Park, including our outing on the 21st.

Down on the farm, Steven Strasburg had his first start against Altoona on Sunday. His final line, via Dave Sheinin of the Post: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. He threw 82 pitches, 55 for strikes. I’m told he kept his velocity up, and looked good in his professional regular season debut. Stras did pick up the win.

Bhangra Blowout 17 this weekend

Bhangra Blowout 17 is this Saturday night, 7PM at D.A.R. Constitution Hall. What’s Bhangra Blowout, you ask? It’s an intercollegiate dance-off between assorted South Asian dance teams, all trying to put on the biggest, baddest bhangra show. Bhangra itself is a traditional Punjabi folk style, but it’s also a common pop style in Bollywood movies, so modern performances are often influenced by other styles as well, including hip-hop. But really, there’s no point in trying to describe it. Behold last year’s winning performance, from Virginia Commonwealth University’s team, after the jump. Continue reading

The Hirshhorn Museum rocks.  I keep trying to think of a better description for the place, cause as writer – that is my job; however, no other term seems more fitting or more appropriate as a means to express my resulting state of euphoria that occurs following a visit to the Museum.

Whether it is the eclectic architecture of the building or an inspiring artist on display – I am consistently enamored.  And the Hirshhorn Museum’s After Hours party on Friday night, with its award-winning entertainment and international feel, just made it official.

Weekend Fire at Eastern High School

The beautiful weather this weekend was interrupted for part of the city with smoke clouds and sirens, as an accidental fire at the construction site at Eastern High School struck on their roof. Workers were adding a membrane to the roof when the fire broke out. Everyone made it out safely, but this will set the already-delayed project back a few weeks while they fix the fire damages on the roof and the “minimal” water damage.

The fire was a two-alarm incident which took just over 90 minutes to contain and douse.

Willingham Goes Long, Livo Returns, Nats Win 5-2

Josh Willingham ended the weekend on a high note for the Washington Nationals, knocking in all five of the Nats runs against the Mets at Citi Field for a 5-2 victory (including a first-inning grand slam).

Livo’s big return to the Nats was a seven shutout inning appearance was what Riggleman’s been waiting to see from his starting pitching staff – a bit of consistency on the mound.

And all the while, it was Johan Santana on the mound for the Mets. Poor Johan, but way to go Nats. This weekend was the first consecutive wins this season, leaving that Nationals at 3-3 as of today. The last time the Nationals finished a day at .500 or better was April 5, 2008.

Jason Marquis will face Cole Hamels in Philadelphia this afternoon at 3:05. Here’s to hoping Marquis can lower that 13.50 ERA by a few points today.

Boston Wins in Shootout, Holds Ovie Pointless

Yesterday’s showdown between the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals was everything NBC hoped it would be as their Game of the Week. There was grit, goals, and grudges – all good ratings boosters – despite the fact that neither team had much to play for. With the Caps ensconced in the number one seed and the Bruins in the sixth slot (after clinching earlier in the weekend), it was less about playoff implications and all about momentum-building and individual milestones. In the end, Boston emerged victorious from the shootout with a final score of 4-3 and a three-game win streak heading into the postseason.

Alexander Semin finally reached the 40 goal plateau with a soft shot under Bruins’ goalie Tim Thomas with just over 2 minutes gone in the first. With Semin’s accomplishment – 40 goals, 84 points in a career-high season, it seemed to the sellout crowd that Ovechkin wouldn’t be far behind in ratcheting a few more goals to claim the Maurice Richard Trophy.

Alas, it wasn’t to be. Continue reading

John Lannan out does his Opening Day appearance on Monday by throwing 99 pitches in a long five inning outing today against the Mets, ultimately getting the 4-3 win.

Game Highlights include:

Tyler Clippard ties his career high strikeout count in a game with seven K’s, no walks (the last time Clippard struck out seven in a game was  at San Francisco in 2009). Clippard also pitched a spectacular scoreless three inning set.

Willy Taveras shines in his first start today in right field knocking in a career high of  4 RBIs, including a two-run triple and a bases loaded single.

Matt Capps (2 for 2 in save opportunities this season) closed out the game with the basses loaded in the bottom of the 9th thanks to a wee Willie Harris who caught a sinking line drive for the win in left field.

Next game is Sunday at at 1:10 vs the Mets at Citi Field to close the series.

Desmond’s Bat Not Enough To Curb Mets, Mets Win 8-2

Young, hard-hitting Ian Desmond‘s two run triple in the top of the 2nd at Citi Field was no match for this Mets squad. For a team trite with troubles last season, the Mets are hoping to turn their playing around in 2010. The Nationals are feeling the burns of a Mets ball club ripe and ready to outplay the 2009 version of themselves (which isn’t too hard to do if they would just stay healthy), which should make for quite the NL East summer-long battle.

Mock went 3 1/3 innings on 4 hits, 5 walks, 2 K’s, and 2 earned runs. Bruney and Capps did not enter the game, allowing the rest of the Nats bullpen a night of work but also an opportunity for the Mets to score some runs. Mets Right Fielder Jeff Francoeur and Catcher Rod Barajas both went deep twice. Mets win 8-2.

The series continues at Citi Field today at 1:10 p.m. with Johnn Lannan facing Oliver Perez.

And here I thought our cell phones already did enough what with the invention of the iPhone, Blackberry, and all those darn apps and additions you can access via WiFi.

Alas, the future of cellular phone use in DC is set to change yet again now that DDOT has announced the Pay by Phone option.

That’s right — Pay by Phone. DDOT will launch the Pay by Phone meter pay option starting Monday at more than 700 parking spots in Dupont Circle, Union Station and downtown on K Street, I Street, and the 900 block of New York Avenue NW.

“We are going to take advantage of one of the most cutting-edge technology to improve the parking experience city-wide,” DDOT Director Gabe Klein told NBC Washington. He said one of the department’s goals is to update the “outdated inventory of parking meters.”

How’s it work? The total time gets charged to your credit card. Then, you can check out a history of charges anytime by logging into the online account you’ve set up.

Get started! Set up a free account at paybyphone.com or by calling (888) 510-PARK. Once you’re signed up you just call the toll-free number, enter the location number posted at the meter and time.

Some may say DC lacks a fashion presence.  However, with the onslaught of successful, local style blogs and publications in combination with the migration of young creative-types into the city – Washington is finally getting the makeover it has been desperately pleading for.

Helping our city make its mark is the new Worn Magazine.  The DC-born publication “is intended to bring greater awareness of local fashion and art to the District and to the nation”, combining the power of photography and creativity to “make DC a more art – and style-conscious city that is more accepting of various forms of personal expression”.

I had the unique opportunity to chat with Nicole Aguirre, Editor & Creative Director, about the magazine, fashion, and of course, DC.

So there’s this event coming up on July 17th at the Verizon Center called “Star Wars: In Concert.” It’ll feature live symphony performances of music from the films, narration by Anthony “C-3PO” Daniels, and an exhibit of costumes and props. Nerd paradise, right? (She says, fully embracing her own nerdiness.)

Tickets went on sale today, and to drum up interest (and to get dorks like me to blog about it), there will be costumed Storm Troopers, a Jawa, and Darth Vader walking around outside the Verizon Center tonight from 5-7PM while fans are arriving for the Caps/Thrashers game.

We Love Music: Serena Maneesh @ DC9 4/7/10

Serena Maneesh
courtesy of Serena Maneesh.

Norwegian, neo-shoegazer, wunderkinds Serena Maneesh (finally!) returned to the DC area on Wednesday night when they played a painfully short but brilliant set at DC9. It has been four long years since Serena Maneesh first brought their mammoth live sound to our area; when they played to an embarrassingly small crowd at the State Theater in 2006. I was one of the lucky few in attendance that night and I have been a babbling fool about this band ever since; singing their praises every time the shoegazer revival is up for discussion and playing just about every track off their first self-titled debut at my DJ nights over the years. If you read my original review and then their #2 spot on my 2006 best shows list, it is obvious how taken I was by their My Bloody Valentine-esque approach to live performance. The State Theater show is one of the best shows I have ever attended. Hence my many years of agony awaiting their return.

Nats Win, Silence Phils

‘Doubled up.’
courtesy of ‘NDwas’

The Nats (1-2) silenced all Phillies (2-1) fans last night by beating the defending NL champions 6-5 at Nationals Park. Riggleman’s first four batters (Morgan, Guzman, Zimmerman, Dunn) ended up going a combined 7 for 14 in yesterday’s game. They got their offense started early in the bottom of the 1st with a three run lead, giving starting pitcher Craig Stammen a decent amount of wiggle-room to toy with.

Stress mounted as the game continued. The Nats bats stayed quiet again until the 4th, allowing the Phillies the opportunity to score  a run here and run there during the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th but the Nats didn’t stay silent. They answered back with a game total of five extra-base hits (three doubles, one triple, one homer) to win the game.

Zimmerman went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, including the game winning hit in the 7th and Willie Harris hit a two run long shot into the stands in the 4th, proving the Nats do have the ability to take ‘em to the yard.

Tyler Clippard gets the win, Matt Capps gets the save, and the Phillies Nelson Figueroa is charged with the loss.

Garrett Mock will make his regular season Nats debut tonight against Mike Pelfrey and his New York Mets (1-2) at 7:05 from Citi Field.

Metro Weekend Doors, Closing Early? Maybe.

‘Lotus #49’

It looks like Metro’s trying to get responsible, start saving money, and create more time to do track maintenance. I’d say, “Great! Hoorah! I’m proud of you,” but I can’t do that. Why? They’d have to eliminate late night train service on weekends to do it.

Director of Operations Planning at Metro, Jim Hughes, told WAMU-FM’s David Schultz that Metro carries less and less people that later in the night it gets. Well duh, Mr. Hughes. The earlier closure time would cost close to 800,000 riders a safe way home, but would save Metro more than $6 million a year.

If Metro goes through with the proposed change, DC area businesses would run the risk of losing a decent amount revenue previously brought in during those late weekend hours. Metro hot spots such as U Street, Chinatown, Dupont Circle, and Adam’s Morgan could all be hit hard by Metro’s actions.

I remember prom, I remember it all too well. My date cancelled on me a week before the event and I wore a plaid dress (yes, I looked like a Sandra Lee ‘tablescape’ for Spring). Needless-to-say, my prom experience was not like what you saw in the movies; however, it definitely was memorable.

No matter what your prom memories look like – good, bad, or non existent, Kissing Frogs’ Prom Dress Project should catch your eye. The Prom Dress Project hopes to give DC/MD/VA high school girls, who can’t afford their own prom dresses, the chance to make lovely prom memories in some fabulous dresses by designer Alfred Angelo.

Where We Live: Old Town Alexandria

‘View down King Street’

Alexandria is an independent city in Virginia that measures 15 square miles and includes over 100,000 residents (which is much larger than the typical neighborhood that we profile in Where We Live), and includes distinct neighborhoods like Arlandia, Rosemont, North Ridge, Del Ray, and West End.  This profile will mostly focus on the civic and commercial heart of Alexandria in Old Town, but it should be noted that Alexandria is made up of charming neighborhoods outside of that area that are definitely worth a visit.

History: This is a town with a lot of history.  Here’s the short version– Alexandria was originally a Native American settlement, then a major port, then part of DC in 1789 (only to be retroceded in 1846), then a quiet southern town frequented by tourists in the early twentieth century, then a growing suburb, and finally in the 1960’s the Old Town area was reborn as a commercial center and civic heart of the city (though many original historic buildings were demolished to make room for this ‘progress’).  The long version can be found on the Lyceum’s website about Alexandria history.
