Saturday Memorial Concert for Adam Hosinski and Rory Weichbrod

On October 9th, 2010, Adam Hosinski and Rory Weichbrod, were crossing Rockville Pike in North Bethesda, when they were struck and killed by a driver who was later arrested on DUI charges and convicted of manslaughter.

This Saturday, from 2-7pm, friends and family will gather at The Bullpen, across from Nationals Stadium, to celebrate the lives of these two men, with a memorial concert and fundraiser for two charities (The Special Olympics and Operation Once in a Lifetime) the two were closely involved with. The event was conceived and planned by several of Adam and Rory’s closest friends, specifically the band members of Midnight Spin, close childhood friends and classmates of Hosinski and Weichbrod. According to the victims’ close friend, Kevin Boyle, “The concert is a memorial, a charity fund raiser, and most of all a celebration of the lives of two of the best guys I was lucky enough to have as a part of my life.”

The weather for tomorrow will provide the perfect day to head over to The Bullpen for tons of fun, live music, cornhole, a fast pitch baseball machine, food and drink, but most importantly to remember two DCers taken far too soon.

The event will not require a cover charge.

Friday Happy Hour: 3 Stars Syndicate

With all the excitement about the recent launch of DC Brau you could be forgiven for missing the slightly-quieter drop of a second DC based beer company, Three Stars Brewing – but, if so, it is high time you found out.

Debuting with their Syndicate saison, brewed in collaboration with Evolution in Delaware, the seasonally-appropriate style is infused with red, white, and black peppercorns to create a spicy, floral, summer beer. It is quaffable and tasty, without being overbearing. (If you have tried the Green Peppercorn Tripel from Baltimore’s Brewer’s Art, this is a far lighter, more subtle pepper quality.)

If pressed, I would pick 3 Stars’ Syndicate over the DC Brau Public Ale – but they really are very different styles, so the comparison means little. The principal things they share are natures well-suited to drinking on the warm patios of their home city as the season carries on and a hint of more great things to come from both local breweries.

Food Tweet of the Week: Senart’s

S 005

Senart’s Oyster & Chop House is officially one month (and a week) old. So far the verdict is: huge success – just try getting a seat at the bar during happy hour.

But on Twitter, where you can follow the restaurant at @SenartsDC, it sadly only has 15 followers and has only tweeted 6 times! I guess this goes to show that a restaurant really can do well sans Twitter these days.

Their tweets, though few, are neighborhood-ish, informative, and fun. I wonder what they could do if they Tweeted more.

Hot Ticket: This Will Destroy You @ Rock and Roll Hotel, 6/5/11

This Will Destroy You - Tunnel Blanket
Just to get this out of the way – yes, they live up to their name. THIS WILL DESTROY YOU is one of the loudest bands I’ve seen live – the kind of loudness where you might go deaf if you don’t wear earplugs. I caught them last year at DC9, expecting a pleasant set of their older, gentler post-rock material, with the typical soft-loud dynamic I love. Instead, what I remember best was their last track, a ten-minute blast of droning noise, where each sound caused so much tension that every changing note was a huge relief. I never really knew the feeling of stillness until the concert ended and my bones finally stopped vibrating.

The optimism of their first album “Young Mountain” has largely disappeared. Since that show last year, This Will Destroy You have moved into more experimental, darker, noisier soundscapes. Maybe they wanted to differentiate themselves as much as possible from their fellow Texan post-rockers Explosions in the Sky? If so, mission accomplished. They really hate being labeled post-rock, and prefer the term “doomgaze” now. Scared yet?

So yeah, they’re coming to destroy the Rock and Roll Hotel this Sunday . If you’re looking for a band that stretches instrumental rock into evil territory, or looking for something heavy without quite being metal, make sure you catch this show.

Serendipity

Hopefully you haven’t missed it in the Shake Shack, Pinkberry, Luke’s Lobster craze…but Serendipity 3 is now open in Georgetown. There’s no way you haven’t heard of the NY based shop and its signature oversized Frrrozen Hot Chocolate and Foot-Long Hot Dogs, BUT you can also have the President’s Lobster Pasta here, a dish exclusive to DC. For the best opening story and pics head to Revamp.

Power

Can’t wait to see what the Young & Hungry team puts out for its Of Edibles and Eminence: What Makes a Powerful Restaurant? list on June 10th. They write “Beyond the ‘power lunch’ and the often elusive ‘power breakfast,‘ the places where we eat wield influence in a variety of ways. Some restaurants change our behavior. Some change entire neighborhoods.” Send Y&H your suggestions!

Jack Rose

Metrocurean tells us that Jack Rose, the new whiskey bar and restaurant from the team behind Bourbon, could open any day now. So if you’re looking for a place for whiskey, you might want to start walking towards 18th and Florida. It’s about time — we’ve been talking about this place forever!

Zaytinya, Bezu, Pizzeria Orso

In one of my favorite features, Best Bites Blog takes “the pulse of three area restaurants” in The Needle.  Zaytinya and Pizzeria Orso do very well…Bezu not so much.

In honor of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotels’ 25th anniversary of their chocolate chip cookie, they’ll be giving out free cookies from 10 am to 6 pm at Union Station. The Cookie CAREavan from the hotel is making a stop in DC as part of their 10-week, 10,000-mile and 50-city tour and will be giving out the same cookies they give to every guest who checks in to one of their hotels.

The Cookie CAREavan tour is hopping on the food truck bandwagon and is also a sponsor of the Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race.

So head over to Union Station today for a little sugar boost in your day or also as a perfect gift thanks to the holiday cookie delivery service they offer.

A small batch, handmade gift shows you care. Not just about the recipient, but about supporting small local businesses. We can work with you to customize so you don’t have to worry about someone not remembering who gave them the amazing cookies.

Pepco Outage continues into 3rd Day

The power outage in the business and residential district just north of Union Station that is affecting 1,800 customers. It’s also affecting half a dozen or more DC Government agencies that make their homes in the office towers there.  The outage was caused by an “Underground Cable Fault,” which is Pepco’s fancy talk for “it done blowed up.”  The underground power cable runs overheated, which resulted in a failure of the system.  Because those lines are underground, it’s a bit of a bear to service.

Now, why it’s taken three days, well, that’s all on Pepco.  As Councilmember Yvette Alexander tweeted, starting next fiscal year, Pepco will be on the hook for $100,000 in fines for each “unreliable incident.”  It’s not exactly clear what that means yet, but this certainly sounds like it might be an unreliable incident.

Power’s expected back on at noon, but if you’re without power and getting hot today, there are cooling centers open.  Also, if you’re wondering which agencies are closed, there’s a list of that, too.

Nats stomp Phils, 10-2

Marquis hurls a Gem

It’s been a hard season, so far, but nights like Tuesday night are the refuge of the hard-luck fan.

I could take no joy in the lead that the Nationals amassed over the Phillies in the third inning. Given the Nationals’ ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this season, especially over the last few weeks, it was a tough night to watch the team, despite the 10-2 win they amassed. Between the heat, the roving packs of Philly fans, and the lead-but-not-a-lead, this was definitely a night where I popped an extra omeprazole with my half smoke.

The NHL’s Newest Southeast Division City: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

We discussed this in depth (and what it could mean for the Caps) a few weeks back, but the Atlanta Thrashers are officially on their way to Winnipeg. It sounds like in the first season, the team-we’ll-all-want-to-call-the-Jets-no-matter-what-they-get-called will still play in the Southeast Division (even if they are in Western Canadia) before conference and division realignment takes shape a year later – with Columbus, Nashville and Detroit as your clubhouse leaders for a move to the East.

What will this mean for the Caps next season? Three road games for a divisional rival that’s 1,233 miles (1,984 km for our Canadian readers) away.

Funny side note: The announcement came at around noon this morning. As of 11 a.m., though, the Thrashers were still selling season tickets. Might want to refund those.

Catch a Striped Bass in Maryland, Win $10,000

Maryland’s Department of Fisheries released a number of tagged striped bass this weekend that are eligible for various bounties, starting at $500 per tagged fish.  One fished, nicknamed Diamond Jim (for Diamond Jim Brady, no not that Jim Brady, the other Jim Brady) is worth $10,000 to the lucky angler who brings him in.

Choosing the best bass fishing rod is a lot like going on a blind date. You can read reviews, listen to your buddies, and even hold it in your hands in the store but you never know what to expect until you show up and try it on the water. So, how do you make that decision? You’ve got a few different choices. One you could go to your local pro shop and play Russian Roulette with the salesman who hasn’t likely picked up a rod once in his life – or, you could let an expert offer you our honest opinions such as the best saltwater spinning reel under 100 based on experience, research, and years of trial and error.

The Striped Bass (aka Rockfish), in addition to being tasty in a lemon butter sauce, is the state fish of Maryland.  You can fish for them all through the Chesapeake Bay and out into the Atlantic.  You can get an annual fishing license through the state for $15 if you’re a Maryland resident, or $22.50 if you’re not. If you just want a week’s worth of fishing, that’s $6 or $12.  if you’re a Virginia resident with a saltwater fishing license, Maryland offers reciprocity, which means you don’t need to pay twice.

Nats Drop One-Run Game to Philly on Memorial Day

The Nationals failed to secure a victory against Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies on Memorial Day despite a ten-hit game. Monday’s 5-4  loss is Washington’s third straight one-run loss during this homestand.

“It’s a loss. If we got six hits, it’s a loss. If we get fourteen, it’s the loss. Losses hurt and we completed very well,” manager Jim Riggleman said after the game.

“There’s no moral victories but you hope it seeps into people that we can do this. We can hit. We know we can hit. [There’s] a history of hitting and we’re going to hit.” Continue reading

Padres Small Ball Better Than Nats, Take Rubber Match 5-4

A scrappy game was played between two scrappy teams at Nats Ball Park on Sunday afternoon with the Padres proving to be the scrappiest of the bunch on the weekend, taking the rubber match 5-4 and the weekend series two games to one.

The Nats and the Padres are two teams that cannot hit. That became painfully apparent in the first two games of the series this weekend, with teams trading 2-1 wins on Friday and Saturday. Sunday degenerated in to a “get it done any way humanely possible” type of affair featuring bunts, sacrifices and small ball tactics to make any baseball statistician cringe.

The epitome came in the top of the ninth. Jorge Cantu pinch hit for the Padres’ pitcher slot and scraped a double down the right field line. He was brought home two batters later by an single from Ryan Ludwick that barely made it out of the infield, off the glove of shortstop Ian Desmond who whirled a throw to home that was a second too late.

Memorializing Endless War in DC: Is it Possible?

‘leaving the Senate’

There was a piece in the Outlook section of Sunday’s Washington Post entitled “How we memorialize endless war?” by public-monument scholar Kirk Savage. It’s an interesting read that sparks a legitimate question on this Memorial Day weekend.

In the wake of the U.S. Armed Forces catching Osama Bin Laden after a near ten year search, the American war on terror isn’t over. Our troops are still overseas and many more never made it home. And, a good amount of the men and women who did make it home are wounded soldiers in some capacity, be it mentally, emotionally or physically.

Savage’s article begs the question: “Will Washington ever memorialize the fights these men and women fought if there is no set end date to the on-going nature of the fight against terror?” Continue reading
