Ever wonder what nun’s do in their spare time? Wonder no more! The International Gallery at the Smithsonian opened a new exhibit on Friday featuring the stories of 12 Catholic sisters who arrived in New Orleans in 1727.

The exhibit demonstrates the overall impact of Catholic nuns had in the shaping of our nation’s culture and the evolution of social service over the past 300 years.

A wide-range of displays are featured, including: a letter from President Thomas Jefferson assuring the women that their work could continue following the Louisiana Purchase, the role of the sisters in treating soldiers on the front lines in the Civil War, the founding of the Mayo Clinic and other historically documented events.

“Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America,” is on a three-year tour and will be open to the public until April 25.

Metro To Issue Rider Refunds To Those Experiencing Lengthy Delays

Frequent Metro riders have reason to jump for joy today. Metro Deputy General Manager for Finance and Administration Carol Kissal told the Washington Examiner that “it is time for the agency to give something back.”

(This of course being the time where the happy dance starts…)

With price hikes in the works for Metro this upcoming fiscal year (Kissal says any permanent fare increase will take place on or around July 1), it only seems fair that talks about refunding loyal riders take place.

There is no official course of action at the moment, but  in the mean time, refunds for those experiencing long wait times on Metrorail and Metrobus can browse the other options available on the Metro website.

Arenas Charged With Felony

Gilbert Arenas is now facing felony weapons charges related to the gun events in the Wizards locker room. The Post is reporting that Arenas is also seeking a plea deal related to the case.

Throw the book at ’em, DC.

Update: The max he’s facing is five years and a fine for his trouble, which would indicate it’s just a single charge instead of one charge per gun, which was initially bandied about. The Post has further detail about the incident which was previously not released:

The guns became an issue after Arenas and Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton got into an argument after a card game and Crittenton allegedly said he should shoot Arenas in his surgically repaired left knee, sources have said. Days later on Dec. 21, at Verizon Center, Arenas placed the guns on a chair next to Crittenton’s locker with a note that said “pick one.”

The End of the Sidewalk (Law)

‘Sidewalk Closed Signs’

Not every street in DC has a sidewalk. In fact, there are large swaths of the city where they’re a bit more rare than we’d like. DC City Council has been looking at a common sense law to add them in where they’re missing for the last two years, but haven’t come to any kind of conclusion over whether or not they’ll be in place anytime soon. At question are property-owners’ rights, many of whom without sidewalks are requesting that their right not to have them be granted. There’s $9M in stimulus funding for sidewalk creation and improvement in the District’s budget this year, and it’d be nice to see used before we lose it, Council.

BYT and DCist have passed along that the Gibson will be donating the proceeds from all the Sazeracs and Old Fashioneds that they sell tonight to the Red Cross to benefit the Haiti earthquake relief fund.  If you needed an excuse to drink excellent cocktails this evening, now you’ve got it. I’ll be doing my part, that’s for sure.

Catch a Circulator To Rosslyn? Maybe. River East? Nope.

DDOT’s Circulator buses are one of the best things happening in the District from a transit perspective. Short routes, yes, but reliable service and comfortable carriage make up for the fact that they don’t go everywhere. Ridership has proven strong along the five routes that go from business to entertainment districts and back. The City Council is hoping to expand service and add another route: Dupont to Rosslyn and back.

One small problem: The Circulator can’t leave the District unless there’s a change in the law. This route, which would replace the current Georgetown Connection buses, would require a change in the charter for Circulator buses. The council can vote to grant that, and is expected to do so after some public handwringing in the coming months. Councilman Kwame Brown was hoping that the Circulator’s sixth route might be a bit different, and run from Union Station to Southern Avenue. That plan was rejected out of hand for the time being.

Virginia Vs. DC

‘Walking Past a Fight’
courtesy of ‘Karon’

That’s how the new legislatural session looks to the Washington Post: A showdown between a State’s right to govern itself and the Federal Government’s right to make national policy. They have their eyes on three proposed bills in the Assembly which seek to start court fights to protect the rights of the States: one to remove the requirement of the Health Insurance Reform Act for all citizens to carry health insurance, one to prevent the federal interference in intrastate commerce, and one to prevent federal regulation of firearms that are made and sold within Virginia.

While it’s not clear how much support these bills have within their respective houses, it’s hard not to see each of these as a challenge to the Federal authority in Washington DC. These are court fights that would last years, but could protect the individual state’s sovereignty against the Federal Government. It’s also very possible that should Virginia succeed in the courts, that many other states would follow suit.

Contestant From Richmond, VA Makes Bachelor History

If you missed The Bachelor last night, then you missed TV history when contestant Rozlyn Papa, from Richmond VA, was kicked off the show for having an “inappropriate relationship” with one of the show’s staffers. Details on what defined an “inappropriate relationship” are unclear and Ms. Papa has since denied the accusations, but whatever happened it was heavy enough to have both parties’ relationships with the show terminated.

The disruptive incident was reported, even before the series aired, but exactly which contestant it was or what exactly they did was a secret. Up until being asked to leave by host Chris Harrison, Rozlyn had already been given a rose by pilot Jake Pavelka, and was definitely a top contender for the bachelor’s heart.

Personally, I’m not a viewer of the show, but I HAD to tune in for this. I can’t wait to see if Rozlyn is invited to the show’s reunion. That would be epic.

30 Days Started Last Week

photo.jpg

Tomorrow, when Congress gavels itself back from recess, the 30-day clock on a number of important DC legal measures begins. If you’ve not been following along, you may need to be reminded: Every law passed by the City Council and signed by the Mayor must in turn be reviewed by Congress. Now the 30-day clock is session days, and not calendar days, but best guess would be that the bill would pass out of Congress’ authority by the end of February.

Update: We received an update from the Congresswoman’s office: The 30-day calendar actually began on January 5th with a Pro-Forma session, meaning we’re five legislative days closer than initially reported.

Another Cuddling Incident

Has the “Georgetown Cuddler” returned?  Police report that a woman in Glover Park awoke on Sunday morning to find a stranger spooning her in bed. Upon discovery, the man fled without stealing anything, or otherwise causing any property damage.  This crime bears striking resemblance to a spate of sexual assaults that occurred in Georgetown, last year.  In all cases, women asleep in their homes awoke to find a stranger fondling them. This is first such incident since August.

Verizon Center Takes Down Arenas Banner

NBC Washington has the video of Verizon Center personnel removing Arenas banner from the side of the building this afternoon. It’s not clear if this is a deliberate move by the Wizards, or by the Verizon Center management, but either way, Agent Zero’s profile is a bit smaller right now.

Another Near Metro Disaster & Potential Price Hike

As if WMATA hasn’t been in the news enough, today comes word that on December 10, 2009, a team of independent safety inspectors were nearly struck by a metro train at the Braddock Road Station. According to the Tri-State Oversight Committee, the inspectors “were forced to quickly scramble out of the way to avoid being struck.” Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The incident occurred shortly after Metro lifted a six-month ban on monitors accessing live subway tracks, and was only one of a long list of safety violations reported by the committee.  A summary of the report by The Washington Post stated that “Metro’s safety training was inadequate and that the transit agency needed to take “immediate, short-term corrective action” to ensure worker safety.” The Post also reported that WMATA is taking action to correct the situation and will hold a safety session with multiple transit agencies.

Additionally, we hear that the Metro Board will hold public hearings (to take place before a Jan. 28 vote) on adding a 10 cent surcharge to Metro fares. The increase in fares (from March to June 2009) would be an attempt to cover a $40 million dollar shortfall and to prevent significant cuts to both metro and metrobus service. Continue reading

A man shivvied out of his clothes yesterday, over near the White House at 5pm, to go for a jog around the White House. The Secret Service were rather upset that the man just left his clothes in a bag, which had to be deemed as a suspicious package, at the corner of 15th and E Street to run around, and for his troubles they took him in for indecent exposure, but he has not yet been charged.

No word on how badly 25 degree windchill affected the jogger’s suspicious package.

Much of the western part of DC is a traffic jam this morning thanks to a smoking power line at the Rock Creek Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue that closed both the Parkway, in both directions, and Pennsylvania Avenue, and impacted the Key Bridge as well.

Police and Fire are waiting for Pepco at this time to shut off the power so they can make the repairs and restore traffic flow.

Northface Store Robbed, Handgun Involved

Yesterday afternoon thieves entered The Northface Clothing Store on M Street in Georgetown, stole a large amount of merchandise and held the pursuing security officer at gunpoint before making their getaway.

At around 1:45pm, five suspects entered the store, removed a significant amount of merchandise, exited the store without paying and got into an awaiting dark colored, 4 door, Mercury Marquis parked on 36th and Prospect Streets. Then, according to Lieutenant John M. Hedgecock of the MPD, “The [Northface] security officer confronted the suspects within the vehicle. At this time, the driver of the vehicle pointed a silver handgun at the security officer and stated ‘back up’.” Fortunately, the  security guard, employees and passersby were not hurt during the incident. A description of the suspects is pending further MPD updates.

The theft is interesting considering October reports by My Fox DC and DCist that undercover MPD officers would be donning Northface apparel in an attempt to nab thieves. Wonder if the two are in any way connected. Continue reading

One Less Challenger for Fenty

The word came down late yesterday: R. Donahue Peebles will not challenge Mayor Fenty in 2010. For a while, it looked like we might have several challengers for Mayor Fenty, whose popularity is on a bit of a slide after a few scandals and miscues, but no one, it seems wants to make a serious effort to run. Kwame Brown? Staying Mum. Vincent Gray? Quiet like the Sphinx. Is it part of some grand plan to let the mayor keep screwing up by the numbers, and not to give him any competition for that part of the negative spotlight? Very possibly.

When will a real challenger emerge?

Shanahan will also have some control over the roster under the deal, something that only Coach Gibbs was given before. The deal will pay Shanahan $7M per year.
