Live Metro Chat on Friday

WMATA is hosting a live chat with John Catoe this Friday from noon-1pm. This chat will be in the wake of the Thursday board meeting, during which general cuts to service are expected to be announced.  Metro is dealing with a $40 Million deficit, which the blame largely on decreased ridership due to the economic downturn, and in the wake to the train crash in June of last year.  Expect questions on how individual routes, particularly bus routes, will be effected by service downgrade.  You can join the chat here.

AG Nickles Wants Your Old Phone Card Balance

Sunday night Reuters reported that DC is suing AT&T over phone card balances. In essence, for all of those pre-paid phone cards out there in the world, some of them have balances that are never spent. DC is using a piece of law called Escheat that dates back well into feudal England. The concept is easy: If there is property, it must be owned by someone. If you abandon property long enough, it devolves back to someone after a period of time, usually the state.

Thus, as with dormant or abandoned bank accounts, AG Nickles wants to see the same done with phone cards. In specific, he’d like any card abandoned by someone with a billing address in the District, for more than three years, to devolve back to the City, and inserted into the General Fund. Sounds shady, but it turns out to have a lengthy history in the law. Got any old phone cards? Might want to use them all the way up. Call your mom, she hasn’t heard from you in a while.

Arenas Says The Guns Were a Joke

Gilbert Arenas released a statement this afternoon through his lawyer after meeting with the US Attorneys’ Office and MPD. Apparently Arenas moved the weapons as he was concerned about his children’s safety. Perhaps Mr. Arenas had not heard of gun safes before, which is entirely possible for someone trying badly to imitate Plaxico Burress.

While I’m pleased to hear the gun was not drawn in anger, that it was drawn at all suggests a lack of respect for the weapon, for his teammate, for the City of DC, and to the fans of the Wizards. While I would not like to see Mr. Arenas thrown into irons for this one, perhaps a little bit of extra community service and a hefty fine would be excellent reparations. Right after the Wizards terminate his contract.

A Third Crasher

The Washington Post has learned that there was a third party crasher at the State Dinner in November. The crasher, whose name has not been released, came in as part of the Indian Delegation, and it’s not clear what charges they are facing. They are, however, facing criminal charges and that’s why the privacy.

It would be a travesty if the Salahis went free and this was the dude that got arrested.

Georgetown’s American Eagle Outfitters Shuts. Tweens Left with Plenty of Options

Over the holidays, the Georgetown strip lost another retail shop with American Eagle Outfitters shuttering its flip flop, tank top, bikini laded aisles for good.  Luckily for those AE diehards, there are plenty of other substitutes to be found close by, like Vineyard Vines, Abercrombie & Fitch, Rugby, Tommy Hilfinger, Patagonia, etc…..

Like most commercial areas, Georgetown is an ever evolving strip with shops and restaurants opening and closing year round. Unfortunately, during this economic downturn, there have been more departures and less arrivals, and according to CarolJoynt.com there could be more casualties in the horizon.

Arenas in Drawn Gun Incident with Teammate on Christmas Eve

‘Introducing Gilbert Arenas’

I know, it’s New Years Day, the start of a brand new decade. It’s about fresh starts, and optimism. That is, unless you’re a Wizards fan. And then you wonder how this happens. Gilbert Arenas was reportedly in a dispute with drawn firearms with teammate Javaris Crittenton in the Wizards Lockerroom. On Christmas Eve. Over a Gambling Debt.

Fellas, be glad that Abe Pollin didn’t live to see this. Because this would’ve killed him from sheer embarrassment.

In addition, federal authorities and MPD are investigating the incident. I’m not sure why the feds are involved, as this would likely be an MPD investigation, but if the reports are corroborated, Arenas and Crittenton could face felony firearms charges.

The best comment so far is from abias, a commenter at DC Sports Bog: “Judging by the way they’ve been shooting on the court, was anybody really in danger?”

Hampton Roads Just Says No to Skins/Chargers

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach should be a no-brainer Redskins market, right? I mean, who else would you cheer for? Well, this weekend they pulled the Redskins game off the air so that WVBT could show the Dallas/Philly game that has actual consequences for the playoff picture. That’s just how bad the Redskins are this year. The sports director at WVBT said the Skins were “unwatchable,” and that emails after he read the decision on the air on Tuesday night were running 30:1 in favor of the Cowboys/Eagles game.

Yowch. Sorry Skins.

Population On The Rise

Good news! The DC population is at its highest in over 20 years … and it’s still growing!

The city’s population set to break 600,000 in 2010. How do we know that? The Census Bureau had a head count of 599,657 residents as of July 1 which means DC is on pace to pass the 1991 count at 601,000.

WaPo says that this surge in residency pertains to the recent recession and housing market crisis but I think that’s too easy of an answer. The real reason people are sticking around is simple — DC is hiring.

Three Caps on Russian Olympic Squad

‘Semin Reaches’

This kinda slipped under my hockey radar (sorry, been focused on the Winter Classic in two days), but better late than never, right? Three prominent Capitals players were announced to the Russian 2010 Olympic hockey squad on Christmas Day: Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, and Semyon Varlamov.

I know, not a huge surprise, these guys. They’ll be joined by several other NHL and KHL stars, including former Caps players Sergei Fedorov (now with Metallurg Magnitogorsk) and Viktor Kozlov (with Salavat Ufa).

It’s an interesting roster, with 9 players on the 23-man squad coming from Russia’s own Kontinental Hockey League. One wonders if the Russians are playing a bit of sports politics by trying to puff up the KHL, rather than build the best team possible. (Keep in mind, however, that the final-final roster won’t be announced until February 15.)

Still, it’s a team with massive firepower and will be highly entertaining to watch. Just like Caps hockey…

Redskins’ Orakpo Named to All-Pro Team

Congratulations to the Skins’ Outside Linebacker Brian Orakpo, who was named to the Pro Bowl 2010 Team today. He’ll be headed to Hawaii Miami for the only Postseason action any of the Redskins see this year (unless you count Shaun Suisham going with the Cowboys…) in the Pro Bowl. Orakpo’s 11 sacks share the team lead, and he remains the one good thing that Vinnie Cerrato did, so I suppose that’s something to be comforted by, Skins fans.

Say Goodbye To Free Street Parking On Saturdays

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

There once was a time when parking was free on the street — even if it was metered. That time comes to a close as the new year approaches. You can thank DDOT for that one.

Drivers are required to feed their Saturday parking meters starting Jan. 2 despite any disdain they might feel toward the subject.

WaPo says that this isn’t the only change facing DC drivers when it comes to street parking in 2010. DC is planning to finalize a premium parking program that would hike meter costs to $2 an hour while a couple thousand meters will charge 75 cents per hour.

Is there any positive here? Sunday parking is still free. I’d have to say that in this case — something is better than nothing.

DC No. 2 On 2009 List Of Most-Literate Cities

‘Reading Room’

A survey conducted by Central Connecticut State University was released, ranking DC No. 2 among the 75 most-literate major cities in the country.

This serves as the good news to last weeks “bad news” ranking DC 36th on the “happiness scale”. Our state of happiness is up for debate but at least we can read!

What was the goal of the CCSU survey? The attempt to, “[…} capture one critical index of our nation’s well-being — the literacy of its major cities,”  study author & CCSU President Jack Miller, said in a news release. “The information is compared against population rates in each city to develop a per capita profile of the city’s ‘long-term literacy’ — a set of factors measuring the ways people use their literacy — and thus presents a large-scale portrait of our nation’s cultural vitality.”

Other cities making the top 10 include: Seattle, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Portland, St. Paul, Boston, Cincinnati, and Denver.

Caps Welcome Chimera, Say Goodbye to Clark, Jurcina

‘Miller Robs Clark’

Welcome Jason Chimera to Caps country. The Columbus Blue Jackets left winger was traded to the team for Capitals captain Chris Clark and defenseman Milan Jurcina yesterday afternoon.

Chimera, who has 8 goals and 17 points on the season, comes at a time when the Capitals are flying high as the top club in the Eastern Conference. With a glut of right wingers and defensemen, team GM George McPhee felt the time for a trade was right.

Columbus has to agree. With one of the worst records in the league this season, they’ve needed some serious help in team leadership and on the blue line; this trade seems to have addressed both issues for them.

While one of Columbus’ most popular players in the locker room and one of the team’s fastest skaters, Chimera hasn’t lived up to expectations in Ohio. He debuted in the 2005-06 season with 17 goals and 30 points and knocked out 15 goals in 36 points in 2007-08. But last year, injuries limited Chimera to only 49 games, with a production of 8 goals and 22 points overall. He does bring energy and edge to the ice, and the Capitals hope he can blossom in their more aggressive style of play.

Both Coach Bruce Boudreau and McPhee said the Capitals won’t select a new team captain immediately.

Merry Christmas From the Nationals

The Nats have had an active off-season that just got more active. This morning at 1am, approximately, they agreed to a 1-year deal with closer Matt Capps with undisclosed terms. Capps is the third pitcher the Nats have signed this week (Eddie Guardado and Jason Marquis being the others) and will take over the closer duties for the team in 2010. The Nats have been uncharacteristically active this off-season, and appear to be making a run at .500 baseball for 2010.

9:30 Club Says Fight the Merger

‘Sold Out’

Last night I got an email from the 9:30 club. Usually, their emails are about the sweet shows they get, and about DC Music, but this one was about something else entirely: the LiveNation/Ticketmaster merger that’s in the works. Specifically, they’re hoping that it won’t go through, because it would be bad for DC:

As a concertgoer you have already felt the pain, and if Ticketmaster and Live Nation get their way, it’ll get worse. In the last 12 years, since Live Nation and its predecessor started its widespread takeover of the concert industry, concert ticket prices have shot up 82% while the consumer price index has gone up just 17%*. We are concerned that if the two concert industry behemoths, Live Nation and Ticketmaster, are permitted to merge, the variety and quality of artists coming to local venues will be affected, and your costs could rise further and faster.

And it’s signed:

The 9:30 Club, I.M.P., Merriweather Post Pavilion, Jam Productions, Metropolitan Talent, Another Planet Entertainment, Frank Productions, Stone City Attractions, Rams Head Live, The Black Cat … and independent concert promoters and venue operators nationwide.

If you want to learn more, you can check out TicketDisaster.org and read up on the merger, and how to object as a concert-goer. Me, I think those bastards at TicketMaster can die in a fire, so I’m all for tanking this. “Convenience” Fees my ass…

DC To Make Public Office Building Energy Efficiency Levels

‘Peeking Through’

In 2010, DC will require owners of buildings with more than 200,000 square feet of office space to track their energy efficiency to be made part of a publicly available database of energy efficiency information. DC will be the first to require that this information be made publicly available starting in 2012. All office buildings of that size will be given Energy Star ratings that will be available to potential tenants and others.

Not Full strength, mind you, as Metro Access is closed today except for medical trips for dialysis, etc, but buses and trains are all running today, to all stations. They dug out 106 miles of track below the 8″ mark to let trains pass safely, and thanks to the works of the DDOT Plows, the bus routes are clear enough for passage. Be safe out there.

Why Milk and Bread?

‘Harris Teeter bread isle’

We’ve been reporting since yesterday that, in light of the storm, stores have been running out of “essentials” like milk and bread. Now, I’m not from DC originally, I’m from Maine, but I’ve lived in the south for most of my life. It’s always perplexed me that citizens of non-snow prone states, at the first whispers of a substantial storm, immediately flock to their local grocery and buy up all the milk and bread. Why milk and bread? Why would you need more milk and challah buns during a snow storm than you would on any other day? Up north, people stock up on salt and snow shovels, and make sure they’ve got enough of the food they’d normally eat to last for a day or two. Can a southern reader please explain to me to logic behind the milk and bread craze?
