Friday Happy Hour: Cool Hand Cuke

Welcome to the Friday Happy Hour, your single drink primer for the weekend.

Last month Samer and I were treated to a sneak peek of the incredibly refreshing cocktail Owen Thomson would mix up to inaugurate the “Farm to Glass” program in his new role at Cafe Atlantico. Beginning tonight, you can try it too. Called the Cool Hand Cuke, it has a beautiful green hue quirkily topped by a baby cucumber blossom. Perfectly balanced between vegetal and spice flavors, it features SubRosa Tarragon Infused Vodka, Black Rock Farms Baby Persian Cucumber Juice, black pepper and thyme juice and “Dr. Thomson’s” spiced liquor #2.

The “Farm to Glass” program is part of Cafe Atlantico’s Farmers’ Market Dinners, a three-course menu (priced at $45) sourced from the Penn Quarter FRESHFARM market by newly appointed head chef Richard Brandenburg and served every Friday evening during market season. The “Farm to Glass” cocktail program will complement the dinners and their seasonal ingredients.

A green cocktail for a green program. Sip up what Samer called “summer in a glass,” and don’t forget to eat the baby cucumber garnish too – it’s part of the fun!

Get Your Preak On?

Last year’s Preakness Stakes was one of the worst attended in the race’s history, largely attributed to the inability to bring in your own booze to the infield. This year’s Preakness hopes to solve that, but by providing $20 unlimited beer to patrons who can arrive as early as 8:30a for a 6:18p post time. This has shades of Ten Cent Beer Night to me, and could result in some hapless drunkard running onto the track during the race, but that might be me projecting memories from my misspent college days onto the race.

Tickets are still available ($65 after fees for the Mug club, $45 for just the infield at the Preakness), and Zac Brown Band and O.A.R. are both playing the infield that afternoon before the race. Tickets elsewhere on the track start at $70, and go up from there.

Good Lunch with a Great Purpose: The D.C. Lottery to Host the 3rd Annual “Taste of 12”

The third annual “Taste of 12” is sure to have you tasting a little bit of everything on Friday May 21st.  Hosted by the D.C. Lottery, the event allows you to sample food from area restaurants AND contribute to a great cause.  Proceeds will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank, and will go towards the Pollin family’s initiative to give one million meals to the less-fortunate.  For just twelve bucks, you can sample up to six of the participating restaurants, which include but are not limited to: Acadiana, Matchbox Vintage Pizza Bistro, and Rosa Mexicano.  Zaytinya, the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington’s 2010 RAMMY nominee for “Upscale Casual Restaurant of the Year,” will even be featured.

You might notice that all of these restaurants are located in the same vicinity, which is the common thread that brings them together every year.  The “Taste of 12” is always held at the Verizon Center, and was originally a celebration of the building’s tenth anniversary.  It also served as a thank you to local restaurants and businesses for their support.  The event was such a success that it evolved into a charitable tradition in our community.

The “Taste of 12” will be held between 11:30am and 1:30pm on the main concourse of the Verizon Center.  For more information, you can visit the Verizon Center’s website .  Get your tickets today!

Schadenfreude: DC’s Best Sports Moments of the Year?

Leave out the fact that the Nationals are currently leading the National League Wild Card race (yes, it’s early, but still, little victories down by the Navy Yard are always worth heralding): this hasn’t been a fantastic year for DC sports. The Caps saw a fantastic regular season amount to naught, the Redskins and Wizards struggled mightily, and it took United hundreds of minutes to net their first MLS goal this season. I mean, Steinberg reported that we live in only the 7th most miserable sports city, but it has certainly felt a little bit rougher than that.

Therefore, I hereby propose that the last two nights have offered some solace for District fans. Both Ovechkin’s NHL rival, a certain Canadian forward who plays in Pittsburgh,  and LeBron James, who’s Cavaliers had given the Wizards a fit throughout the last seven years, saw their respective seasons come to an end in playoff losses. Does it take away the sting of that Caps’ loss to the Canadiens or the dismal NBA season? Not completely. But maybe it’s a small amount of peace.

Now, if this could continue and DC could send some of that angst for Philadelphia and the Flyers to help out the Bruins tonight, I know at least one WLDC writer who’d be happy…

You, dear reader, are keyed in to all the social networks, on your bliggety-blogs, and your faceyspaces, and your tweetie pages, and that’s why you probably know at least one candidate for higher office with their own Twitter or Facebook page. Or do you? Perhaps that account you’re following is just a knockoff candidate. The Maryland Board of Elections is here to help save you. They want to require that candidates engaging in social media certify their social media accounts by including the Authority Line.

Georgetown Moby Dick’s Expanding

Moby Dick’s House of Kabob is tasty. Nom falafel. Nom Kebob-E Kubideh. Just Nom. Too bad their small, cramped Georgetown location at 1070 31th NW does not particularly invite sit down enjoyment of Moby’s tasty Mid-eastern fare.

Then comes word and construction permits that Moby’s is expanding the Georgetown location into the adjacent, now-defunct, laundry/dry cleaning shop.  This is a much welcomed development for those of us who wanted a dine-in experience to accompany our hummus.  Hopefully, construction will lead to a Moby’s similar to the Dupont Circle location at 1300 Connecticut Avenue.

Hot Ticket: Spectrum @ Velvet Lounge – TONIGHT!

spectrum

DC music geeks are in for a very special treat tonight that almost slipped in under radar. Peter Kember aka Sonic Boom, a founder of the legendary Spacemen 3, is bringing his band Spectrum to town tonight for a rare states-side gig. They’ll be carefully crafting a a dense force field of sound with their vintage electronics, keyboards, and absurdly modified guitars along with DC area favs Screen Vinyl Image.

As far as I can recall, Spectrum has never played DC before. If they have, I missed it. I am ridiculously excited to catch this band tonight. I saw them at All Tomorrows Parties New York in 2008 and it was excellent but felt painfully short, as is the nature of great festival sets. Tonight’s full set should provide one of the true mind-bender sets of the year. For the curious, Spectrum does indeed unleash some Spacemen 3 classics through-out the set that blend perfectly with their own sound-as-drug approach.

Any fan of underground music within a hundred miles would be a fool to miss this rare opportunity to see Sonic Boom and Spectrum lay down the law.

The show is at Velvet Lounge, begins at 8:30 sharp, and only costs $12.

This year’s RAMMY awards mark the first time that there will be a Mixology category, which is great news for lovers of craft cocktails. To help celebrate, from now til June 3 every time you purchase one of the RAMMY cocktails at the five restaurants nominated for “Mixology/Beverage Program of the Year,” you’ll be entered in a contest to win two free tickets to the 2010 RAMMY awards gala on June 6. Just purchase one of the featured cocktails below, fill out an information card, and the winner will be chosen at random.

I don’t think you need more incentive than that, so I’ll skip my usual flowery language and just encourage you to head over and sample the following drinks (riffing on this year’s Casablanca theme, “We’ll Always Have… Restaurants”): Continue reading

Food Truck Regulatory Dancing

‘Setting up Shop’
courtesy of ‘M.V. Jantzen’

I learned 2 key points from Tim Carman’s article on DC food trucks generally, and a new food truck coming to DC from New York specifically.

1. I’m going to have to reconsider my earlier assertion that shellfish isn’t something I would buy from a truck, because the coming lobster roll truck sounds awesome.

2. While I knew that food trucks were increasing in popularity as a way around the completely unworkable DC site license requirements for carts, I did NOT know that the trade-off is that wherever the truck stops, there has to be a line of customers waiting. They can’t just park and wait. So announcing their comings-and-goings on Twitter is (essentially) a legal requirement, not just savvy social media use (though it’s that too).

Go read it. I dare you to not get hungry. I will just be sitting here on the far end of the Mall, wishing for the day when a food truck makes it all the way over here.

Keeping Track of the Taxes

Keeping track of all the different taxation proposals currently in front of the council, as they figure out the budget for next year, is not a job I’d want to have. Fortunately, Michael Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal is doing that for you. He’s got a summary of the different committee proposals for alteration of Mayor Fenty’s budget. According to Neibauer, the budget remains largely intact with spending at $5.2B.

Police Week in DC

Today is the first day of a four-day event for police departments all over the US to come and honor their fallen, participate in a conference, and have a good time in our fair city. Tonight, there will be a candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial at Judiciary Square. Friday and Sunday, there will be a National Police Survivors’ Conference, which might just be the very worst named conference ever, given the trend for Police across the country to militarize and conduct dog-killing drug raids. There will also be a Memorial Service at the US Capitol for Peace Officers on Saturday.

Be mindful that the Police are always welcome in our town, but it would be appreciated, officers, if maybe you wouldn’t pull the fire alarms and engage in drunken debauchery in our town? It would be a bummer to throw the country’s finest in our jails.

Mayor Fenty Shunting Bag Tax Money to Streetsweeping?

Is Mayor Fenty looking to go back on his word, regarding the bag tax? If you may recall, the 5-cent plastic bag tax was supposed to fund cleanup efforts on the Anacostia Waterfront, and only that. However, according to the Tax Foundation, Mayor Fenty wants to use that money for street-sweeping budgets, instead of the general fund.

C’mon now, Mr. Mayor, I’m pretty sure that’s not what you said the tax was for. I know that times are tight, budgetarily, but this is just silly.

The Sackler Gallery is gearing up to open a new exhibition called Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia on May 15th.  The exhibit will be featuring 36-plus examples of bronze castings, ranging from the prehistoric period all the through the post-Angkorian period (which, if you don’t know what this means – like I didn’t, it references third century BCE to to sixteenth century CE). The exhibition will continue till January 23 and is the result of an ongoing partnership between the Freer and Sackler Galleries and the National Museum of Cambodia.

So if you want to check out art from Cambodia, and save yourself a super long plane ride – this would be the perfect exhibit for you.

Democracy in Action: Anti-Soda Tax Coalition Emerges

Lead by approximately three dozen local restaurants, a new coalition against the Soda Tax has emerged in the wake of Mary Cheh’s proposal to the City Council. Members include Magruder’s, Au Bon Pain, Corner Bakery, Pizza Boli’s and pretty much every corner market in the city, as well as an unexpected member: United Medical Center. The tax would add a penny per ounce to every soda purchased, from single bottles, to multipacks.
