The Palace of Bro-nders

I’ve been kind of underground for the last week as the ol’ day job went into annual conference mode and I was working 12 hour days for a week and a half. But that’s over now and I’m catching up on all the stuff I missed on the Internet during [...]

Tiff: This weekend marks the first one in months where I will NOT be househunting! We’ve just gone under contract on a gorgeous house in Brookland (which means we’ll be the Brookland Bridges), so I will spend a chunk of my Sunday in my future neighborhood, not only for the home inspection but [...]
When is an Earmark not an Earmark?
”

One of the side effects of finally knowing where I’m going to live at the end of next month is that I’m now paying a lot more attention to news stories involving my future Council member, Harry Thomas of Ward 5. Mike DeBonis reports in the City Paper this [...]

Dhoonya Dance is hosting their popular BollyHipHop workshop this weekend in the Chevy Chase Athletic Club at 1:30. It’s 2 hours, $30 in advance/$35 at the door, and a really accessible way to try out Bollywood dancing in a context that won’t feel so unfamiliar before committing to a longer class. Also, [...]

Metro has just announced that the train operator involved in the February 12 post-Snowpocalypse train derailment at Farragut North has been fired for “failure to follow standard operating procedures.” She had been placed on administrative leave immediately following the accident, which is normal in such situations, but has been terminated effective today.

Congratulations to Greg Engert of Birch & Barley/Churchkey (who Kirk profiled in January) and John Wabeck of Inox in McLean (who we haven’t profiled yet but Katie and Cathy visited Inox for Capital Chefs) for making Food & Wine’s Sommeliers of the Year list. There are but [...]
Comedy in DC: Table Scraps Edition
These next couple of weeks are a little sparse on the comedy front, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. The Washington Improv Theater FIST competition continues apace, with round 1 finishing up this weekend. They’ve already got some highlight video posted, so you can see if competitive amateur improv looks like a fun [...]

Pentagon Metro Reopens
”
courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’
The Pentagon Metro station has reopened following last night’s shooting and is usable. Be aware, however, that it’s just the northern entrance that’s open- the southern entrance and the upper level of the Transit Center are both closed. So your Metrobus will be picking you up and dropping you [...]
Washington Improv Theater: FIST
Washington Improv Theater is hosting a fairly ambitious event for the next month or so: The Fighting Improv Smackdown Tournament (FIST) will see 44 teams of 3 improvisers each face off in a bracketed battle for comedy glory. (Which is totally an oxymoron, but whatever.)
The tournament will run Thursdays-Saturdays every week through April 10, but [...]

National Zoo’s New Octopus Makes Invertebrates Cool

I’m always fascinated to learn more about the other inhabitants of the planet that could totally kick my ass, so I’m pleased that the Zoo has a new Giant Pacific Octopus. It’s actually not so giant at the moment, weighing only 3 pounds, but it’s about to hit its growth spurt [...]

Rebecca: Friday I’m celebrating a friends birthday party with some sake bombs and hibachi at Matsutake Hibachi Steak & Sushi. Then we’ll head on back to the district for some drinkypoos at Martin’s. Saturday I’m on an early morning plane ride to California, so that’s where my DC weekend plans [...]

Welcome to an occasional-but-hopefully-more-frequent series where I drag myself out of bed early and read the local news so you don’t have to.
From the NTSB hearings on the June 22 Red Line Crash:
Yesterday’s testimony dealt with the crashworthiness of the 1000 series cars, and their impending replacement (if 2013 can be called [...]

Here at We Love DC we’ve avidly followed the saga of Nick Cho and Murky Coffee’s tax problems since back in the days of Dickpunchgate. So you may be interested to know that Cho will not have to serve any jail time for his failure to [...]
Comedy in DC: Flooded Basement Edition

I love it when all the pent-up Snowpocalypse comedic frustration is unleashed upon an unsuspecting region. There’s a lot going on, but here are my picks for the week:
Thursday night is BrightestYoungThings’ “Family Hemerlein Variety Show,” featuring music and comedy, MC’d by Seaton Smith (for whom my fandom is well-known) and [...]
About.com guide blatantly rips off DCist

While watching the @welovedc Twitter account yesterday, I saw what could have turned into an entertaining confrontation that sadly never seemed to go anywhere. @DCist_updates angrily demanded that @washingtondcist get an original name. Who is @washingtondcist? Karen M. Hart, the About.com DC Travel Guide.
Hart’s Twitter feed is full of retweets of more renowned DC [...]

Kirk: I’m leaving for the Olympics on Saturday, but I’m going to try to cram some weekend goodness in early, before I get out of town. Tonight, I’m going to SOVA for some bluegrass, a bi-weekly, Thursday tradition that a friend introduced me to, recently. Tomorrow, I’ll likely treat myself to [...]
Capitol Skyline Hotel’s Curious Event Clients

Twitter user @nikki_d brought this article from the Southern Poverty Law Center to our attention, about the Capitol Skyline Hotel and the multiple events by racist or anti-Semitic groups hosted there in recent months. This weekend, the American Renaissance (a white nationalist publication) conference was to be held there, but according to AR’s [...]
Robotic Snow Removal Even Better Than Flying Cars
Meet Yuki-taro. He’s a prototype Japanese snow removal robot with GPS positioning, obstacle avoidance through video cameras in the “eyes,” and, the best part… a compactor that takes the scooped up snow and presses it into compacted ice bricks, which then exit the rear of the robot and are stacked in back.
That’s right, my friends. [...]
