Up Against The Wall Follows Commander Salamander

Exactly one week ago, I posted the sad news that long time Georgetown staple Commander Salamander would be shortly shutting its doors. The only glimmer of hope was that sister shop, Up Against The Wall, was still opened and right around the corner. Unfortunately, today’s posting by local DC-Georgetown blogger Carol Joynt, announces that Up Against The Wall will be closing as well.

No word yet on if this means the entire chain is going under.  I’m planning on swinging by the shop today and seeing if I can find out further details.

Metro Board Hears All The Options

Last night was your turn to talk back to the Metro board, and talk back DC did. The meeting was a standing room only affair, with many turned away who hadn’t signed up to come to the meeting, and more still turned away to the satellite viewing center. It wasn’t always the politest of audiences, we’re told that the loudest cheers and applause came from the commenter who suggested the whole board resign, but it was mostly a civil discourse at Metro HQ.

The best roundup we’ve seen so far has come from Unsuck DC Metro’s coverage, which said that though all choices were bad, but unequally so. Metro has a hard road ahead, and last night was just a preview before the budget for FY 2011 comes. Were you there? What did you see?

The news has just about come down from NBA Commissioner David Stern, Gilbert Arenas has been suspended for the rest of the season after pleading guilty to felony firearms charges. The official word from the Wizards isn’t expected for a while yet, but David Stern expected to face the press soon.

Here’s hoping the Wizards cut this joker loose.

Rhee Explains Controversial Remarks

‘I blame the post office’

The other day when Michelle Rhee was quoted by Fast Company suggesting that teachers laid off as part of the DCPS RIF were poor performing teachers including those who had sex with students, displayed excessive absenteeism and hit students, it made News. The Teachers Union threatened to sue Rhee for Libel. The Council chair threw a fit and demanded an explanation. Today we got it.

As it turns out, all of those things were true. Some of the RIF’d teachers were on suspension for sexual conduct with students, had served suspensions for striking students, and were absent for lengthy periods without explanation.

The letter to the Council Chair, released to the media today, also had the following damning line: “The progressive discipline procedures contained in the applicable collective bargaining agreements prescribed suspension, rather than terminations, for these situations.”

All of that outrage over teachers in the schools having been disciplined for serious offenses and returning to the classroom, and it’s all right there in the progressive discipline procedure that the contract with the Teachers Union demanded. Who’s supportive of the Union again?

Metrobus to Detour Around State of the Union

‘Metro’
courtesy of ‘mofo’

Tomorrow night is the State of the Union address, and as such, there’s a planned motorcade from the White House to the Capitol and back again, and heightened security in the area near the Capitol. In addition, there will be street closures. Metro has announced the following changes:

Metrobus routes 32, 36 (Pennsylvania Avenue Line), 34 (Naylor Road Line) and the 96 (East Capitol Street/Cardozo Line) will be rerouted from 7 p.m. until the President leaves the area.

So, if you’re heading in that direction on the bus tomorrow night, plan to go a little earlier, or a whole lot later. Streets are likely to be closed south of Louisiana and Mass Aves to the north, and north of Virginia Ave and North Carolina Ave to the south. Full closures will be announced likely this evening.

Update, 4:15p: As expected, the road closures are out, and match up largely with what we’re talking about above.

Fatal Accident on Metro Impacts Service on Red Line

This is not a repeat.

Overnight, two Metro employees were struck and killed by a Prime Mover, a diesel-powered equipment mover, on the Red line between Shady Grove and Rockville. Metro has stopped all service between Shady Grove and Rockville at this time, stopping the Red Line at Twinbrook for the time being. There is shuttle service between Twinbrook and the affected stations, and it’s unlikely the affected stations will re-open much before noon. The NTSB is on-site between Shady Grove and Rockville, investigating the incident.

It’s not clear what the two train operators were doing on the tracks, or why the Prime Mover did not see them, or stop in time. If you were hurt or a loved one died because of the same kind of accident, you will need a transit vehicle accident lawyer behind you to obtain the compensation you and your family needs to care for the injured.

Metro has released some transit options if you’re transiting near those two stations today. Take MARC, the Bus, anything except rail, it seems.

UPDATE: WaPo reports that the workers were installing new train control equipment in the tracks.

Hey DC, want another excuse to take your pants off? Did the No Pants Party on the Metro leave you wanting more? Your prayers have been answered in form of a pantless run around the Capitol scheduled for Feb. 13.

Registration for Cupid’s Undie Run (yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like) is now open and costs $30 to enter. The registration fee includes a commemorative event t-shirt, all day drink specials, post-race food, and the chance to run around DC in nothing but your skivvies.

The party starts at noon at Pourhouse (located at 319 Pennsylvania Ave, SE) and ends with a 1.75 mile jog around the Capitol. Who knows — you just might meet your future ball ‘n chain. It’d sure as hell make a good story for the grandkids!

National Archives to Ban Photography

This came to us as a special contribution of one of our photographers, Erin McCann

Via the Post comes word today that the National Archives has decided to ban photography. That means that after next month, unless you are a professional photographer, you’ll be forbidden from using a camera inside the building whose No. 1 purpose is to display the documents of freedom on which our country was founded.

Archives officials opened the issue for public comment last summer with an announcement in the Federal Register. (What? You don’t scour the register?) After two months, they had only three comments, all of which were against a change in policy. Despite this, David S. Ferriero, the chief archivist for the United States, wrote that the agency “does not believe that this rule will create problems for tourists. The agency believes this rule creates a better visitor experience.” Continue reading

Overtime Scandal in the Making at DPW?

The Examiner got their hands on a draft report from the city this weekend that shows serious overtime fraud at the DPW in the garbage collection division. 2009 showed $3.45M in overtime paid out to city garbage collectors, several hundred thousand dollars over the proper cost. The Examiner reports that four employees are at the center of the report, in charge of managing some of the distribution of overtime to other employees.

The final report is due out in days, and AG Nickles has promised an investigation. This could undermine Mayor Fenty’s re-election efforts, but seeing as no one serious has the stones to challenge him, it’s hard to tell what effect it might have.

Caps 4, Coyotes 2: the Streak Continues

Perhaps this is a silly prejudice, but I feel like hockey teams from warm places have something to prove.  I know, I know, hockey teams don’t recruit from their localities and, like every other professional athlete, hockey players go to where the money is, but it doesn’t change the fact that I expect less from a hockey team from Arizona.  If the Phoenix Coyotes did have anything to prove, they’re certainly doing it this year.  With an impressive record, they came to DC, last night, as a very real threat to the Capitals five game winning streak.

The Capitals, with their aforementioned win streak and Ovechkin’s impressive scoring record, were definitely the team to beat and the Coyotes were determined to cut them down to size. The game opened with Phoenix playing aggressively and keeping the puck near the Capitals goal for most of the 1st period.  The Caps looked a bit tentative, early on, but managed to take advantage of their first power play, with Brooks Laich to scoring in the opening minutes.  The Coyotes answered in the 13th minute of the period, tying game. Populist Rage Comes to the Kojo Show

via the Kojo Nnamdi Show

Kojo Nnamdi had mayoral candidate Leo Alexander on the Politics Hour where he railed against poverty and unemployment, and, wait for it, illegal immigrants? He claims that 30,000 undocumented workers in the DC area are taking jobs that poor people in DC should be taking, and wants firmer job controls forced on DC employers of all kinds, specifically using the E-Verify system as a standard for all employers.

I don’t think that Alexander is all that viable a candidate as it stands, and this certainly won’t help his cause.

Peterson is also facing charges on the Eastern Shore related to the school’s day camp.

Mega Millions Comes to DC January 31st

The Mega Millions lottery draw is coming to DC starting the end of next week, giving DC two options for the big lottery jackpots. While the Lotto tends to be a tax on people who are bad at math, funding does return to the state lottery boards which then fund education budgets, so I tend not to feel too awful when I grab a $5 ticket once in a while when the jackpot hits $100M or so. Don’t worry, though, Powerball will be sticking around, so it’s likely you’ll get two shots at big jackpots here.

March For Life Tomorrow

Tomorrow marks the 37th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court Decision of Roe v. Wade which determined the legality of abortions in the United States. Every year, pro-life protestors gather in Washington and march on the Supreme Court in opposition to the decision. In past years, uninterested bystanders, pedestrians and drivers have been subject to large billboards and signs of grisly images of aborted fetuses on the drive to work, so if you’re sensitive to that kind of imagery, you might want to arrange not to come up 14th Street tomorrow, or be on the Metro first thing in the morning.

Expect heavy delays on Constitution and Independence near the protest, which will run from 7th Street NW to 1st Street NE at the Supreme Court, and also in the Penn Quarter area.

We’ve talked before about how it’s looking like no one will step up and challenge Mayor Adrian Fenty in his bid for re-election this year, and how unfortunate that is. Mike DeBonis of the City Paper has a list of draftable candidates that could make the District a far more interesting place to live. He suggests, amongst others, Kojo Nnamdi and Peggy Cooper Cafritz. It’s a good read, time to go dream.

Commander Salamander Closing

Georgetown shop, Commander Salamander, which surprisingly has its very own definition in the urbandictionary, will be shutting it’s Wisconsin Avenue doors shortly. The shop known for it’s puny t-shirts, colorful trucks and gag gifts has long been a staple of the Georgetown shopping scene. No word yet on why the shop is closing, but fortunately, sister shop Up Against The Wall, with a location in the Georgetown Mall on M Street across from J. Paul’s, will remain open.

DC, VA Apply for $450M in Schools Funding

DC and VA have applied for $450M in Race to the Top funding, hoping to garner a share of the funds available through a new federal program to add significant federal dollars to local schools as part of new programs. Maryland has decided to wait until the second round of grants in mid-2010.

The District’s proposal (PDF) went unsigned by the WTU, which may detract from its strength. WTU is currently in a protracted conflict with Chancellor Michelle Rhee over their labor agreement, current policies, current staffing, current control structures and what color the sky is (Rhee says Columbia blue, WTU says more of a Dodger blue) which lead to this situation. The proposal weighs in at 187 pages, and features sections on low-achieving schools, better programs for teachers, and using data to better inform instruction.

Winners for Phase I will be announced in April. Unselected bids will get feedback so they can reapply in June of 2010.

The parking meter conversion is scheduled to reach its completion today and DC residents must now be aware that  new enforcement hours and higher rates – including  Saturday enforcement and some meters running to 10 pm  — are in effect.

Not sure if these changes have anything to do with you? WTOP has the low-down on what you need to know.

But one thing’s for sure, it’s probably a good idea to start paying attention when parking on the street. You don’t want to go and get a ticket for forgetting to read a sign.
