Northside Social Now Inside Liberty Tavern

photo.jpg

Clarendon’s a perfect spot for me in the morning, as it’s on the way into the District if I’m headed that direction for client visits, or if I’m on my way out to the exurbs for other client visits. Since Murky’s demise, I’ve been jonesing for a good coffee shop in my neck of the woods. I tried Greenberry’s without any luck, I can’t do Starbucks, and that leaves me with hardly any good options.

No longer. Northside Social (Facebook for now), going into the old Murky space, is operating from the first level of Liberty Tavern for the next few weeks, serving up coffee and espresso (nothing too exotic, though, leave chai and flavor syrups on your wishlist for when they open back up across the street) as well as scones and muffins (today’s Frangelico muffin was extra delicious) and tomorrow they’ll add a tasty breakfast sandwich, with house-cured bacon and Polyface eggs on toasted bread. I’ll see you there.

Parade of Lights

PC120336

I took a quick overnight trip to Annapolis over the weekend to hang out, eat food, shop and to see the parade of lights. The parade of lights is a holiday parade where decked-out lit-up boats float along Naptown’s waterfront, blasting holiday music and causing a ruckus. I snapped a few pictures, and thought I’d share. It was obviously dark, and the boats were moving, so it gets a little artsy, but I still think it’s fun. Continue reading

Gonzaga upsets 10th ranked Mater Dei for DC Classic title

Saturday night’s Championship game of the Gonzaga DC Classic held at America University’s Bender Arena proved to be as exciting of a match up as its billing promised.

After two days of  tournament play, the final two teams, Mater Dei (CA) and Gonzaga College High School (DC,) both nationally ranked programs at 10th and 17th respectively, were set to face off.  Based on rankings alone Mater Dei was favored, but no one doubted that the talented Gonzaga squad would make this a tight, action packed game.

The first half was, literally, breathe taking. Court play swung back and forth at a rapid pace with both teams running the length of the court and holding stoppage time to a minimum. Fast breaks set the game’s pace, both defenses played tight, turnovers were abundant and perimeter shooting dominated the scoreboard. The half time score, a low 26-24 with Gonzaga leading Mater Dei, reflected the tight game play. Continue reading

To “the tall brunette with the near perfect body…”

I’m not going to say much about this because my mother reads this blog, but “even if you are a liar and fart like a Clydesdale, I’d love to meet up,” has to be the greatest pickup line of all time.  Tall brunette in Rockville, you’re on notice.  Maybe it’s time to start carrying a small dog to blame, or something.

Win some Peeps loot

If you’ve been anywhere near any source of media in the last 24 hours you’ve seen or heard some coverage of the new Peeps store in National Harbor. Who knew you could support a whole store based on one marshmallow creation?

Anyway, gift bags went out to muckity-mucks during the grand opening yesterday and the National Confectioner’s Association snagged one and is giving it away. Go take a guess at how long a peep took to make back in 1953 and you might win “a Mike and Ike mug, a plush stuffed Peep Bunny and plenty of candy.”

Ice Ice Baby

IMG_1498ICE! penguins by Corinne Whiting

I’ll be the first to admit that planned communities and “town center” mini-metropolises aren’t really my thing. I find them rather soulless and frankly a little creepy, so I tend to steer clear. But on a recent snowy Saturday, I was lured over to Maryland’s National Harbor—that relatively new complex of colossal convention centers and hotels, shops, eateries and a man-made “beach,” site of the relocated Awakening sculpture that I loved to crawl atop as a kid (at its former Hains Point home).

The draw this past visit? A mini-city of ice created by forty Chinese artisans flown over to sculpt 5,000 blocks that cumulatively weigh two million pounds. I was intrigued. Despite fears of rambunctious tots dominating this surreal ice world, the experience was a pleasant one. Visitors purchase timed tickets to enter Gaylord National’s ICE!, housed in a tent on the resort’s property that contains a 15,000-square-foot “cold room.” To combat the nine degree inside temps, guests borrow XXL blue parkas before entering, turning the masses into a sea of super-size Smurfs (wee ones shriek in horror as they attempt to wiggle free; adults belly laugh, delighted by the silly scene). Groups then get their photo snapped by staff as if about to board a cruise ship, before slipping beyond the warmth into the winter wonderland. The vibe’s a bit cheesy, but charming all the same.

Win Tickets to Young Frankenstein at the Kennedy Center

Puttin' on the Ritz, from Young Frankenstein
Puttin’ on the Ritz, from Young Frankenstein, click to embiggen.

Being raised in a home where Mel Brooks is regarded as a National Treasure, one of my earliest media memories is of watching Young Frankenstein, particularly the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” scene. So I’m pretty excited that Young Frankenstein has been made into a stage musical, and will be coming to the Kennedy Center starting December 15th and running all the way to January 10th.

But I’m even MORE excited that we’ve got two pairs of tickets to give away. But it won’t be through blog comments this time… this is a Twitter contest.

Here’s the deal: Between now and December 28th, you need to follow both @welovedc and @YFTour, and tweet about the musical, mentioning both @welovedc, @YFTour, and the hashtag #ItsALIVE. The mentions and the hashtag make sure all the DC tweets get entered in the DC contest, and following both twitter accounts means we’ll be able to notify the winner by Twitter direct message, so all those steps are important. So for example:

I want @YFTour & @welovedc to send me to see ‘Young Frankenstein’ at the Kennedy Center! #ItsALIVE http://bit.ly/7zyfqN

Oh, Eco-Christmas Tree

‘The So-soes: Chrismas Tree’
courtesy of ‘ATKR’

Is it possible to make a tree more eco-friendly? Yes! A local organic farmer is growing Christmas trees without herbicides or pesticides, or artificial color sprays (wow, I never knew that color wasn’t real).

You can pick one up for $30 to $125, about what you’d find at the corner lot. For the greenest option, check out a live tree you can replant after the holidays (they’ll dig it or you can). Or choose a Colorado blue spruce, Douglas fir, Con-color fir, white pine, Canaan fir, or Charlie Brown tree that just needs love. Wreaths and roping are available, too. Want to give a tree to a teacher, limited-income family or community worker? You can get a discount.

Find yours at the Adams Morgan farmers market on Saturdays until Dec. 19, come to the farm, or arrange to pick it up in Takoma Park (twice weekly until Christmas). To order, call 301-587-2248 or email esiegel2@igc.org.

We Love Music: Arctic Monkeys @ 9:30 Club 12/8/09*

Arctic Monkeys Tickets
“My Arctic Monkeys Tickets” courtesy Greta Kauffman

Arctic Monkeys made their return to the 9:30 club in a rip-roaring fashion on Tuesday night with a set-list that mixed their trademark hyper-pop with their new album’s dedication to song-craft and musical exploration. The effect was at times lost on the sold-out crowd but the combination of their good-will towards these Brit-pop phenoms and the lads’ savvy use of radio hits peppered through-out kept the good times going for all. I was extremely pleased to see this young band so committed to their artistic development in a live show when so many other young acts fall back on crowd-pleasing when faced with sudden global levels of success.

I last saw Arctic Monkeys at the Coachella Music Festival in 2007 on the “Favourite Worst Nightmare” tour. The band in ’07 was confident and beaming, clean-cut in hair and dress. Their set then was a barn-burning bit of guitar-driven Brit-pop that left everyone smiling. A great time but somewhat disposable on an artistic level; really a reflection on their sophomore album which to this day feels like a minor offering compared to their blisteringly awesome debut. Since I last saw them play, Arctic Monkeys have gone on to become one of the biggest bands in Brit-pop and have toured the world several times over; lead singer and songwriter Alex Turner put out an excellent 60’s pop-inspired side-project (The Last of the Shadow Puppets); and the band has produced “Humbug“, easily their most adventurous and daring music yet. The lyrical risk-taking and musical development on “Humbug” is a breath-taking statement by the band that they are serious craftsmen and represents their evolution from being the latest Brit craze to being vital musicians in a landscape full of one-n-done, Ipod commercial composers.

Here’s a place you might not have thought of to look for a holiday gift — your local farmers market.

Last weekend, I went to two farmers markets and found lots of fun items, including organic coffee, beeswax candles and tree ornaments, local honey in various flavors, maple syrup, all-natural bath salts and soaks, jewelry, handmade cards, Virginia wine, Amish pastries and preserves and creamy local cheeses.

While you’re there, you can pick up things like homemade wreaths, pumpkin pies, breads and cookies, winter squash, apples, and local dairy products and meats (think turkey) for a holiday feast.

You’ll even escape the crowds. So bundle up and head out!

We’re receiving reports this morning that Pentagon City Metro is closed due to a suspicious package (is that you, Tiger Woods?) and that havoc is being wrought by a yellow line split in twain, and a blue line stopped near one of its choke points. Details are still forthcoming.

Update, 10:50a: Metro has also closed Crystal City as part of the investigation and has started shuttle service from Braddock Road to Pentagon. Full initial release after the break.

‘Tis the season to be jolly … and drown in holiday libations.

Fear not Holiday Season Partier — The Washington Regional Alocohol Program has got you covered! The program is offering free cab rides home on the off chance that you let loose with your bad self sometime in the next few weeks.

There is a catch though. Not all cabs are in on this free-ride train. Grab your phones NOW and enter the following number: 1-800-200-TAXI or #8294 (TAXI) on your AT&T wireless phone. Do it now or forever hold your peace … because that’s the only way to hail down this free fare.

Holiday Gifts: In Your Community

‘Our finest gifts we bring’
courtesy of ‘christaki’

Having spent some time in the last week coming up with ways for you use your gift-giving dollars to support local artists and businesses right here in your community, I wanted to take some more time to call attention to our neighbors who are also in need of some generosity this holiday season. I don’t need to remind you that this has been a terrible year, with the recession straining charity organizations’ resources on both sides in the form of reduced donations and increased demand for services.

So while you’re choosing that perfect gift for your mom or your brother or your spouse, I encourage you to leave some room in your gifting budget to donate to a worthy cause that’s close to your heart. The problem with writing a list like this is that there are far more worthy organizations who need help than I have time to track them all down. So this list is short and not even close to inclusive. If your favorite charity isn’t listed here, it wasn’t on purpose; so please add it to the list and give us all the widest range of organizations to choose from possible. Continue reading

Metro Management Shakeup Coming?

Some good news out of the Post this morning: Metro’s going to shakeup their management. It’s from Jim Graham himself that the word comes to the Post, so there’s a solid chance that it’s happening, but it’s not clear what a reorganized Metro would look like. It’s suspected that John Catoe will survive the maneuvers, which I think is a tremendous mistake.

Reorganizing Metro with Catoe at the helm is a classic example of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

Being single in DC… 100 years ago

‘Suffrage Hay wagon (LOC)’

Remember Karl’s post about DC’s “culture of single-ism?” Well, some things never change it seems. Nikolas Schiller, man of many talents, posted up a scan and transcription of a 1908 Washington Times article about unmarried women in the District.  It’s fantastic reading, both for its content and as a window into another time.

The overgrown country village by the Potomac lays claim to a possession of a higher percentage of women of marriageable age with a lower per cent of opportunity than any community over which floats the Stars and Stripes, not excepting the man-deserted sitting rooms of the high-browed and austere dame of the hub of the universe nor rural Virginia where the coy and clinging lass of the Southland has been left in solitude while her possible mate sought elsewhere realms of greater activity. To substantiate which claim, though she likes them not, the burg of the broad avenue and the bouqueted beauty quotes the figures.

A recently completed police census reveals the fact that there are 17,000 more women in the city than men, which is rather startling majority out of a total of less than 330,000. It signifies that for each 100 men there are 111 women in the running. These discouraging figures, however, are but a shadow of the real plight in which a woman in Washington finds herself, for the social conditions that surround men in the Government service who largely make up the lists of possible matrimonial candidates are such as to discourage marriage and where there is a tendency shown to fly in the face of this restraint the victim is picked so soon that the rank and file have little chance at him.

As an aside, the 1908 Times is not, in fact, the same times of Today – Rev Moon may have revived the name when he started the Times in the early 80s, but they have not been in continuous operation since that time the way the Washington Post has been.

Chimay Beer Dinner at Cafe Saint Ex

Remember that time I got excited about Truffles a few weeks ago? This is close to that level of excitement for me. I first was introduced to Chimay at Et Voila!, this lovely tiny Belgian place I’m seriously obsessed with in The Palisades. I fell right in love with the Red label Trappist beer. And I tweeted obsessively about it, and then today a friend of mine alerted me to the Chimay Beer and Food Pairing dinner at Cafe Saint Ex on Twitter. (That’s right, you guys keep me on top of my game, and I love you for it.) And then John, WLDC’s badass designer sent me the menu, cause he’s nice like that.

So let’s discuss, shall we? Continue reading
