Midnight Madness A Success for the Wizards

“It think it’s exactly what the team needed,” said the team’s new owner, Ted Leonsis. “Just kind of a jolt of adrenaline.” ~Associated Press, 9/28

Midnight Madness is a college thing. And not every university with a major basketball program does it, either. It’s reserved for the big time programs. It’s definitely not a pro hoops kind of event, though.

Try telling that to the 3,500+ who rolled into the Patriot Center last night to watch the Wizards kick off their 2010 training just a shade after the clock struck twelve. Announced last month, the concept was to rejuvenate a team base that had been fast asleep for years. Enter Ted Leonsis, John Wall and a convenient location on campus, and the idea to do something not normal to the NBA came to fruition. Continue reading

Southwest’s Acquistion of Airtran Means It Will Fly From DCA

Let the bargain airline battle begin at National. Earlier this year, JetBlue announced that it would start running shuttles from Reagan National to two cities – Boston and Orlando. For any who prefer the discount line, saving a trip out to Dulles was an automatic plus. Depending on your airline preference, though, that may not have solved your bargain hunting ways.

As noted yesterday in Patrick’s Twitter round-up, the first question many DCites had about Southwest’s acquisition of Airtran involved what the future would hold for the latter’s existing gates at DCA. Well, wonder no more: Southwest CEO Gary Kelly appeared on Good Morning America this morning and commented that his airline would assume service of those gates at Reagan. SeekingAlpha even highlighted this among reasons why Southwest was attracted to the airline in the first place.

Group A, you may now board without first trekking to Baltimore.

Update: This did in fact originally read ATA. Corrected thanks to our commenters.

100 Arrested at White House in Coal Protests

100 people were arrested at the White House this afternoon as part of a civil disobedience protest concerning coal mining.  They had protested at Freedom Plaza, and then headed from Freedom Plaza to the White House, stopping traffic and disobeying pedestrian restrictions, according to WAMU.  The group was given the chance to disperse before they were arrested by the US Park Police.

My favorite quote from the AP Release: “Jeremy Cherson, a senior at American University in Washington, had a mandolin around his neck and held a carrot and stick in his hand. He said the carrot was a plea for clean energy and the stick was actions like Monday’s rally. He said he skipped a class on critical social thought to attend the rally.”

We Love Music: Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2010 @ Merriweather Post Pavilion 9/25/10

Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2010 was just about as perfect a day as one could ask for. The weather was phenomenal, the crowds and lines were manageable, and the music was spectacular. An irresistible atmosphere of fun prevailed over Merriweather Post Pavilion as Virgin and I.M.P. presented three stages jam-packed with a variety of great musical acts. The one genre that eclipsed all others however was dance music; the day featured a killer line-up of electronic-inspired groups that kept a large portion of attendees in a near-constant state of dance-frenzy.

I split my FreeFest experience between the Dance Forest and the Main Stage. Although I intended to check it out, I did not venture over to the West Stage once all day; thanks in large part to the caliber of the performances I was already watching. From Will Eastman dropping some DJ science early in the day all the way through to LCD Soundsystem’s mega-finale, I had a fantastic time at Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2010.

Losing Count of DC’s Plagues? Now We Have Stink Bugs

Last month, we were talking about bed bugs as the creepy crawlies making you uncomfortable at night. This month, there’s now an even grosser phenomenon taking over the DMV: stink bugs. From NBC Washington’s report over the weekend:

Smelly, pesky bugs known as stink bugs have been swarming the Washington, D.C. area — and when you try to kill them, they just smell worse. “When you try to kill them, before death, they stink,” said Michael Raupp, an entomology professor at the University of Maryland. “They want to find a place to chill out for the winter. They’re not coming in for warmth, they’re coming in for refuge.

By no means is this an outstanding year for stink bug infestations, but in some of the surrounding areas that do rely on agriculture, they can actually lead to some issues. According to an article from this weekend’s article from the New York Times, the bugs have been taking over fields “in flocks” in some parts of Maryland.

Worried you aren’t protected enough? WTOP has you covered with this guide on how to get rid of stink bugs.

And to think, all of this at the same time as Congress is finally back in session.

D.C.’s Cuisine Reigns Supreme

Last night, a couple of our hometown heroes made an appearance in Kitchen Stadium. Chefs Katsuya Fukushima (formerly of Minibar and Cafe Atlantico) and Ruben Garcia (culinary director of THINKfoodGROUP) went to battle against the newest Iron Chef, Jose Garces, in Battle Mahi-Mahi. Previously undefeated, Garces went down 55-50 with Fukushima and Garcia outscoring him on plating and originality. And with their first course complimented by the ubiquitous Minibar cotton candy, who is really surprised?

The Chairman was unfortunately unavailable for last night’s battle (I like to think he was somewhere handing out an employee of the month plaque or trying to work on the FY 2011 budget), but Alton Brown filled in with his best Chairman impression. He tried his hardest, but the impression ends up somewhere between the Chairman and a constipated gorilla. Eater National has the video here. Battle Mahi-Mahi will rerun this Thursday at 9pm on the Food Network.

Redskins
Record: 1-2
Last Two Weeks: 0-2
Place: Tied for second with Dallas & New York

Play not to lose, and you end up doing exactly that. The Redskins have played not to lose for the last three weeks, and their 1-2 record is reflective of a franchise that has yet to play to win a football game. The Skins’ on-field presence has been lackluster, and their off-field shenanigans, with the battle over Albert Haynesworth’s heart and “mind” still proceeding, and a number of player shakeups.

This is a team that is going to dominate the news cycle despite not deserving an iota of your attention, so get used to it, unless they can find a way to put together the will to win. I’m not saying that can’t happen, I’m saying that they don’t seem to have it at this point. Continue reading

Week 3 Recap: Skins vs. Rams

‘bale to the redskins’

Early on in this game the Redskins knew they would have a long day ahead of them. After allowing a 42-yard touchdown run by Stephen Jackson on the opening drive, the Skins fumbled the ball on their first possession and the Rams quickly responded with a touchdown pass by Sam Bradford to take a 14-0 lead after just six minutes elapsed in the first quarter. The Skins did score 13 unanswered points and Philip Daniels blocked a field goal to end the first half, but the rest of the game belonged to Bradford and the Rams defense. Donovan McNabb had a frustrating day because the Skins defense could not get off the field and they allowed the Rams to gain 133 rushing yards. The Skins also turned over the ball twice, had a punt blocked, and the offensive line looked disjointed partly due to Trent Williams’ injury. The 30-16 victory by the Rams is only their second in the last 19 games. While the 1-2 start should not cause panic at Ashburn, there are some major concerns about the Skins’ inability to stop opposing offenses and the lack of depth at key positions. Continue reading

Natwar Gandhi: We’re short $175M

‘Day 150 / 365 – Don’t Cut Our Budget’
courtesy of ‘anitakhart’

The figure has been hinted at a few times over the last few weeks, but now it’s here, and it’s worse than anyone thought.  According to District CFO Natwar Gandhi, DC is facing a $175M Deficit for Fiscal 2011 that starts Friday. Revenue from income and sales taxes are down $100M, and overruns from DCPS ($25M) and Medicaid ($33M) are factors as well.  Look for a lot of hand-wringing purse-string tightening, and new fees and taxes meant to make up the difference.

This is a good deal worse than anyone expected.  More detail as it’s available.

Hot Ticket: Film School @ DC9 9/28/10

San Francisco dream-pop/nu-gazers Film School have entered new territory on their latest album, “Fission”; switching gears from the dark and gloomy approach that has served them well for for almost a decade, on their latest they are looking on the bright side of life by offering up cheery gaze-pop tunes that almost border on being danceable. It is a shift that has injected new life into a band that had been settled into a routine. Not that their past tunes are anything to sneeze at; Film School’s trademark guitar swirls, heartbeat bass, and killer male/female vocals are still some of the best in the biz. It is just nice to see that they have more tricks up there sleeve in terms of tone.

Film School will be bringing their brighter, happier selves to DC9 on Tuesday night for what I am sure will be a shoegazer highlight of 2010. Just because a band changes direction a bit, doesn’t mean that they’ve abandoned the things that made us love them. So I am expecting a well-balanced show of new tunes and Film School classics. As I type this I am listening to their albums “Hideout” and “Fission” on random and the two compliment each other in excellent and unexpected ways. Their bass playing strikes me even stronger when listening to songs from these albums back to back. Come out tomorrow night to hear how they compare for yourself.

PS – Opening band The Depreciation Guild are on the rise and this is a great chance to catch them before they hit it big.

Tour guide licenses restrict both free speech and misinformation

‘circling segways’

J. Freedom du Lac has an interesting article in today’s Post about DC’s tour guide licensing restrictions and the tour company operators who are contesting them on First Amendment grounds. I find myself torn on the issue- as a person who writes things for publication on the Internet, I’m a cranky First Amendment zealot. But as a person who writes things about DC for publication on the Internet, I find misinformation propagated by tour guides to be particularly maddening.

Despite leaning toward the side of the tour operators due to aforementioned zealotry, there was one quote in the article that really didn’t do much to endear the tour guides to me:

On a recent afternoon, Edwards was at the Segs in the City kiosk next to the Old Post Office Pavilion – “the second-tallest building in Washington,” she says in a lilting Australian accent.

Why did this annoy me? The Old Post Office Pavilion is NOT “the second-tallest building in Washington.” At 329 feet tall, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the second-tallest. The Old Post Office Pavilion is 315 feet tall, making it third.

Redskins Cheat Sheet: Week 3 @ St. Louis

All fall long – or at least until the Caps get going again – the Redskins tend to dominate Monday morning chatter in the offices around the District. Win or lose, the Cheat Sheet is here to help you fake your way through any awkward water cooler conversations that come up today.

So. That actually just happened. The Rams had lost 14 straight at home, were breaking in a rookie quarterback and hadn’t won in September since 2006. In come the Redskins, and the Rams shake off the cobwebs behind rookie QB Sam Bradford to pull down a W.

Instead of a bullet point guide this week, it may be easier to decide what kind of fan you want to be this Monday. Your guide, after the jump. Continue reading

Maya falls apart as Braves top Nats 5-0

Heyward hits Ramos

Before the game today, when asked about Yunesky Maya, Jim Riggleman said that he’d settled down.  Jim was right until the top of the sixth today.  The wheels came flying off Maya’s bus, as he gave up a walk, advanced the runner to second on a wild pitch, and gave up a double, a single and a 3-run homer before getting the hook.  The start of the game had been so promising, with Maya retiring the side in the first on just 11 pitches, 9 of them strikes.  After that dominant first inning, though, Maya would begin to lose his razor sharp placement, especially when the Braves had runners aboard.

The Nats Dominate Tim Hudson For Once

Atlanta Braves starter Tim Hudson is among the cream of the crop in this year’s National League Cy Young contenders. He is in shared company beside the Cardinals’ Adam Wainright, the Rockies’ Ubaldo Jimenez, and the Phillies’ Roy Halladay as some of the best in the game. Not only that but Hudson has dominated the Nationals previously going 10-1 with a 1.55 lifetime ERA against the club. But on Friday night, that was of no consequence in Washington.

It took nearly six months but the Nationals finally strung together a season-high four game win-streak in front of a crowd of 22,515. The 8-3 victory over a Braves squad fighting for a Wild Card berth was a direct result of some sizzling at-bats from the Nats likely suspects at the plate. Continue reading
