Hair-Raisingly Expensive

I have paid a lot of money for a haircut in my time. In fact, once I grow out this mess on my head and need it to be styled into a wearable, professional stylish cut, I might even take Belle’s advice and hit up Molecule St. Germain in Penn Quarter, which would mean paying a hefty sum of money. But, like I always say, your hair is the one thing you wear every day, it’s the one quality wardrobe peice worth paying extra for.

AND THEN I READ THIS, an article from the Express that talks about the incoming “stylist to the celebrities” Ted Gibson, who is opening a salon in Chevy Chase. This was all good news to me, seeing as we can always use more style in DC, until I got to this point. “Well, my haircuts are $950. One of the reasons I charge that much is that, usually, when you go a high-profile hairdresser, you’re passed around through many different people. In my salon, you’re with me for the entire hour and a half.” I’m sorry, WHAT?! NINE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS. Let’s say that again. NINE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS. Yo, that’s like, more than what I pay in rent, plus utilities (yes I have a good deal, not the point) and I could probably, say, finance a car for that money.

What is happening here, people?! We are in the middle of a recession! Who in their RIGHT MIND is going to pay $950 for a hair cut? I’m dying to know who his customers are going to be, and if their hair cut will be able to make them dinner, pay their rent and buy them  new clothes. Otherwise, two words: rip off.

Six Flags: One Last Time?

Enjoy Six Flags America in Maryland this summer. It may be the last one they’re open.

Despite concerns the amusement park chain may drop into Chapter 11, the park over in Largo is still planning on opening on April 4. The company’s still struggling with a $300M debt-load from its former owners. However, PR Manager Julia Filz contacted me in order to make it clear to our readers that “the restructuring, while serious business, in no way affects our daily operations. Six Flags America is planning for an exciting season, with more concerts than ever, a new family train ride, a bigger daily show package than ever before, a new Johnny Rockets, a new Cold Stone Creamery, and a new three-point basketball challenge game.”

According to park officials, Six Flags will be hiring hundreds more people than in previous years, which is good news to many teens and college students looking for “fun summer work” in this tough economy.

ABC 7 News has a breakdown of the park’s debt problems, and there’s a piece in the New York Times to help put the whole situation in context. But for those of you who don’t care, better make your plans to enjoy the park this year. It may not be around after August.

The best Manchester Cosmetic Dentists in Town

I’ve been looking for a good dentist, and I’m getting frustrated, so I’m going to use my status as a blogger and call out – ya’ll, I need a recommendation for a dental supplement so check this Steel Bite Pro reviews.

I was reading some Steel Bite Pro reviews and this supplement can help you end the terrible, never-ending pulsating pain caused by tooth infections and gum disease. It can also stop your teeth from excessively moving or suddenly falling off.

Steel Bite Pro is also for people who wish to gain back their smiles. This supplement helps with developing better oral health, thus decreasing the sight of inflamed and bleeding gums. Experts recommend to combine this supplement with a professional dental whitening system like the one you can find at the link to get the best o it.

Nasty breath can also be prevented with invisalign clear braces, and you can smile with confidence once again. With Steel Bite Pro, you do not have to feel embarrassed about various oral conditions.

Ever since I moved up to DC, I’ve been looking for one until I found the soma beverly plastic surgery. The first one I went to here was shady, I won’t name names, but I got a weird vibe, and the office was more like a hospital waiting area with only sheets between the chairs than a dentist office with actual offices. So I started asking around – turns out none of my friends like their dentist, if they even HAVE a dentist at all!

So… fortunately I was able to find the best cosmetic dentist in town, book an appointment at www.360dentalcare.co.uk.

St. Patrick’s Day at the National Zoo

National Zoo St. Patricks Day Great Ape Enrichment
Originally uploaded by Smithsonian’s National Zoo

So, at your job, on St. Patrick’s Day, your coworkers probably wear that one green item from the back of their closet that doesn’t really fit them, or some shamrock-related accessory, and perhaps they get together after work for some green beer. Maybe there are sickly-green pastries in the break room.

At the National Zoo, the great ape keepers paint shamrocks on the walls of the ape feeding area with green rice cereal, feed the apes green food (like broccoli and honeydew- food that is naturally green), and make goodie bags filled with kabobs made with melon and lime. And then they take pictures. They threw a party for the apes. In honor of one of the founding saints of the Celtic Christian Church.

Clearly I’m just jealous no one brought ME a lime kabob today.

How Do Members of Congress Celebrate St. Paddy’s?

With Jello Shots, apparently.

My housemate forwarded this image along to me. Those are Green Irish Whiskey Jello Shots– WARNING: Contains Alcohol — in the telltale Greenware of the Longworth House office building cafeteria.  I guess I would say they are more like a Jello Cup, than a shot, as they clearly dwarf the festive St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes on an adjacent tray.

What would I give to have a “spotted” of House members quietly enjoying their whiskey cups?

British Food For Under $10

But really, isn’t $10 all British food is worth? (Ouch, I guess I’m snarky today.) But whatever, point is: CommonWealth, the People’s Gastropub in Columbia Heights  now offers two affordable lunches perfect for the busy weekday. Available Monday through Friday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., The Local and The Ploughman’s Lunch specials feature Executive Chef Jamie Leeds British-inspired and American-bred classics.

Sigh, I love thrifty deals.

The Local includes a half of the daily sandwich, a mug of house-made soup or a house salad and half a pint, tea/coffee or soft drink for $10. The Ploughman’s Lunch is “inspired from the bygone era, when a ploughman packed his lunch with classic readily available items that would keep while he worked in the fields”. CommonWealth’s Ploughman’s Lunch includes surrey ham, wildflower cheddar, pickled cabbage, apple and freshly baked bread for $9. I don’t know when a plowman ever picked a pig out in the field, but I get the drift.

I’ve never been, personally, to Commonwealth but it’s on my ever-growing list. WLDC Author Jenn quite likes it, so I think you should be all set to spend time out on their patio this spring, enjoying your cheap lunch with a side of chess or checkers.

Hacking The Government (For Good, Not Evil)

The hackers and do-gooders at Sunlight Labs are coordinating their first ever Open Government hackathon from March 29th to March 31st. Although the event takes place in Chicago (at PyCon2009 at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare hotel) there will also be an online presence, so those of you interested in making that rather large DC employer known as the federal government more open and accessible can still take part.

The nature of the sprint will be fairly freeform, two Sunlight Labs members will be on hand guiding users that want to contribute to opening up the government. Users can come to the sprint without any background and we would help coordinate them and place them on a project where there skills would be useful (there is always a ton of scraping that needs to be done, building mini-web apps to showcase gov’t data, etc.)

Free Irish Books Tomorrow!

‘Day 93 – Reading, For Once’

If you happen to be around one of a handful of popular metro spots in town tomorrow beginning at 7 a.m., you may see some of the lovely individuals of Solas Nua, the only organization dedicated to contemporary Irish arts, handing out books. For free! For the 4th year running, Solas Nua will pass out contemporary Irish tomes to passers-by in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

It’s sort of a first-come first-serve, in that, when the books run out, that’s all folks. So keep an eye out if you happen to be around Metro Center, Tenleytown, the U St. Corridor, Dupont (north exit), Chinatown (7th street) or Archives/Navy Memorial.  Volunteers will be taking a wee break (see what I did there?) around 10 a.m., if you don’t see anyone out around that time.

Books and St. Paddy’s day – what could be better?? Well… maybe some Irish whisky…

Just when you thought there was no way you could possibly get more parking tickets in DC, along comes the “sweeper cam.” It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: street sweepers now have cameras mounted on them that take a picture of every car that is in the way during scheduled street cleanings.

You have some time to get your act together, though: street sweeping rules go back in effect March 23, with a one week warning period. Then come the $30 tickets, starting March 30.

Books Set in DC

courtesy of ‘erin m’

So… I read chick lit. It’s true, the sparkly pink kind, with high heels and cocktails on the front. The kinds of books my mother would call a brain snack, and I’m not afraid to admit it. As I’ve been devouring popular chick lit books lately, I’ve run across more and more set in DC – I just picked up Mindy Klasky’s Sorcery and the Single Girl and opened up the first page to find the story being set in a bakery in Georgetown.

I gobbled up both of Kristin Gore’s Sammy series books, Sammy’s Hill and Sammy’s House.  Since Kristin Gore is Al Gore’s daughter, I bought her realistic viewpoint of both DC and Capitol Hill. Rebecca Flower’s Nice To Come Home To was a fun read since I was able to imagine exactly what her shop would look like set on upper Connecticut Ave. I’ve heard interesting things about Washingtonienne, and am looking for others – thoughts, dear readers?

What book set in DC has recently tickled your fancy? When you read them, do you find them mostly accurate or is it more a loosly-based 24 In DC translation of our city?

This Wednesday, while the Environmental Film Festival has DC thinking green, the French Embassy will hold a talk on Polar Deserts and their Secrets.

They’ll discuss research being done in Antarctica on climate change, biodiversity, and human adaptation. In fine French form, they’ll follow the 6 p.m. lecture with cocktails. (RSVP to deputy-cnrs@ambafrance-us.org)

That’s the spirit! Let’s hear more bad news about the planet, then steady our nerves with a drink.

Editor’s Note

I pulled a post here this evening, the first ever on We Love DC for content reasons. You might have seen it, it talked about the AIDS rate in the District of Columbia, news and media coverage of that rate, and it made some comments that I considered deeply harmful, ill-advised, and unacceptable to the level of quality that we try to hold ourselves to here at We Love DC.

If you were offended, either by the original piece, or by its disappearance, I apologize. If you want to talk about it, either here in the comments, or via email, I am absolutely glad to discuss it. My email is tom at we love dc dot com.

We’re serious about the AIDS epidemic, both here and abroad, and we’re serious about media criticism in a way that helps media grow and be held accountable for their writings. This post was serious about neither, and frankly represented some poor choices. That’s why I pulled it.

NBC Washington reports that a second man has been struck and killed by a Metro train this week, this time early Sunday morning.

NBC Washington: “The accident happened on the Orange Line at 1:54 a.m.  The train was going to New Carrollton; Metro was single tracking from Vienna to East Falls Church at the time.”

The death earlier this week occurred at McPherson Square.

ZOOMG. I’m a tad late to the party, but the National Zoo announced a new baby giant anteater. (Note as I’m typing that… Baby giant? isn’t that a bit oxymoronic?) Perusing the National Zoo’s pictures, I’m currently dying of cuteness, and fully expect FU Penguin to come to my rescue asap. (That FU Penguin link? SO NSFW, be warned.)

The National Zoo reports, “Anteaters also have sticky tongues that can extend up to two feet long and help collect insects—they can eat up to 30,000 ants a day!” And also, thanks to typing anteater a bunch of times in this post, I’ve got Nelly Furtado’s Man Eater in my head.

Sigh, I’m so happy it’s Saturday morning…

New Sweetgreen!

‘Sweetgreen Georgetown’

I just got word that come April, DC will have a second sweetgreen location, which will open April 1. The new digs are  at 1512 Connecticut Avenue, NW in Dupont.

The new location will focus on organic cuisine and sustainable practices, from non-processed ingredients on the menu to ‘green’ interior design elements and earth-friendly food containers – including ‘to go’ menus that are embedded with wildflowers for planting in the garden. Isn’t that just fancy?

And you know me, and how much I like free/cheap things (especially food!) so I’m happy to share that in celebration of the opening, sweetgreen be offering $1 food on Wednesday, April 1st from noon to 4 PM. You’ll get your choice of a featured salad, wrap or Sweetflow yogurt at a discounted price of just $1 each. HOLLER. Between the new Java Green and the new sweetgreen, Dupont’s going organic faster than uh… I have no end to that metaphor, but you get my point.

McPherson Square station closed

McPherson Square Station, by arvidbr (Creative Commons)

Update: Metro reports that the blue and orange lines are back to normal.  Just in time for the best part of rush hour.  Perhaps today isn’t so unlucky after all!

Dr. Gridlock, from the Washington Post, reported a few minutes ago that McPherson Square Metro Station is closed.  It is reported that a Blue Line train hit someone on the tracks at that station.

This means that all Blue and Orange line trains are turning around at this station.  There is “bus service” between Farragut West and Federal Triangle, but it might just be faster to walk.  No word yet on when the station will be reopened.
