Road Trip Preview: The Western Swing

The Nationals finished up their most recent homestand with a big win yesterday afternoon, coming up huge against the dominant Phillies.  Over the three-game series, the Nationals did a lot to make the best 1/2/3 starting combo in baseball today look a lot more human and hittable. Heading out of town for almost two weeks, the Nationals had a bit of an uneven homestand. I’d expected them to handle the Padres with a little more discipline, instead of dropping two close games on lack of offense.

The Nats are headed on a westward swing starting today, and that means a lot of late nights for Nats fans. Click on through for some thoughts on the upcoming road trip, and how you’re going to cope with the sleep loss.

Serendipity

Hopefully you haven’t missed it in the Shake Shack, Pinkberry, Luke’s Lobster craze…but Serendipity 3 is now open in Georgetown. There’s no way you haven’t heard of the NY based shop and its signature oversized Frrrozen Hot Chocolate and Foot-Long Hot Dogs, BUT you can also have the President’s Lobster Pasta here, a dish exclusive to DC. For the best opening story and pics head to Revamp.

Power

Can’t wait to see what the Young & Hungry team puts out for its Of Edibles and Eminence: What Makes a Powerful Restaurant? list on June 10th. They write “Beyond the ‘power lunch’ and the often elusive ‘power breakfast,‘ the places where we eat wield influence in a variety of ways. Some restaurants change our behavior. Some change entire neighborhoods.” Send Y&H your suggestions!

Jack Rose

Metrocurean tells us that Jack Rose, the new whiskey bar and restaurant from the team behind Bourbon, could open any day now. So if you’re looking for a place for whiskey, you might want to start walking towards 18th and Florida. It’s about time — we’ve been talking about this place forever!

Zaytinya, Bezu, Pizzeria Orso

In one of my favorite features, Best Bites Blog takes “the pulse of three area restaurants” in The Needle.  Zaytinya and Pizzeria Orso do very well…Bezu not so much.

Happy Eating!

We Love Weekends – June 4 & 5

Marissa: I’ll be kicking off my weekend by seeing my friend’s band, Naylor Court, play at the Velvet Lounge. Show starts at 8 pm and it’s $8 at the door for some great original music and some good covers. Friday, I’ll try to show my face at and my love for all the food trucks at Truckeroo down at Half and M St. SE. Twenty trucks, live music and it’s free to get in? Done and done. Come Sunday, I’ll be picking strawberries out at Butler’s Orchard with some friends and promptly whipping up homemade strawberry ice cream.

Mosley: I really didn’t have any grand plans for this weekend, until I got my weekly e-mail from Cultural Tourism DC.  Two things jumped out at me: Friday night is looking kind of haunting, as in a walking tour of the most Haunted House in DC.  I’ve been wanting to try this tour for a few months now.  And on Saturday, there is a fascinating program at the Textile Musuem titled “Sounds of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani Students Dance Ensemble.”  The sound portion is what interests me, as the description reads “the audience will experience lyrical sounds found nowhere else in the world’s songbook.”  Sunday…well Sunday will be where ever the road takes me.

Fedward: Friday might be a good time to head up to see my friends at Forum Theatre in BOBRAUSCHENBERGAMERICA (Forum Artistic Director Michael Dove acting This I gotta see). Saturday the Social Chair and I have plans to hang out with Don and Darling Wife, maybe with some pizza, maybe with some different pizza and beer, maybe with some beer and pizza. Or who knows? Maybe we won’t even have pizza at all! Crazy! But since it’s SAVOR weekend it seems the beer part is non-negotiable. Sunday we’ll head over to Eventide for bourbon and BBQ, and if we haven’t had too much bourbon in the process we’ll stop by the Passenger for our usual Sunday nightcap.

Tiff: My Saturday is all about the JHOSH. I’m performing, with 199 of my BFFs, in Dhoonya Dance’s annual student and performance company show at the Duke Ellington Theater, and this year the theme is all about the Indian-American experience. So I’ll be spending my entire day rehearsing, fussing at my costume, and finally performing. Sunday is all about pretending I was born a hundred years earlier: strawberry picking at Butler’s Orchard and jam-making.

Legal Analysis on the Jefferson Dance Restrictions

‘Jefferson Memorial’

Summer is a time for re-runs and apparently that goes for protest events too. Adam Kokesh and others have indicated their intention to show up at the Jefferson Memorial this Saturday at Noon for a repeat performance of last Saturday’s civil disobedience. There’s over 2500 folks RSVPed on Facebook, though that seems to include folks who are going to boogie remotely in solidarity.

I already weighed in with my opinion on how I thought the protesters should have responded during their arrest and a number of you weighed in with your position on me getting stuffed. I thought a more useful follow-up would be from someone with actual law knowledge so I reached out to Kevin M. Goldberg who has helped us out with speech law before.

Kevin is Special Counsel at Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth where his area of expertise is First Amendment, FOIA and IP issues, making him a good person to turn to about this. Plus he still takes my calls. He’s also a regular contributor to their CommLawBlog where you can find items like his recent piece about “copyright trolls” and the BitTorrenters who don’t so much love them. If you’re getting your Gaga or Hangover 2 fix via less-than-legit channels this might be the kind of thing you’re interested in reading about.

For the moment, though, let’s talk about doing the monument boogie. Take it away, Kevin.

Don first contacted me Sunday evening with the idea of a guest piece about the Oberwetter decision. That’s Oberwetter v. Hilliard, the case that Adam Kokesh and the other protestors were responding to when they had their Jefferson dance-in this weekend. His suggestion for a primary focus was the subject of that case’s odd-sounding finding: That the inside of the Jefferson Monument is not a public forum.

This isn’t a the first time Don and I have discussed this subject. I teach Journalism Law at George Mason University and talking about when, where, and how the government can and cannot legitimately restrict your speech gets sizable attention in my lesson plan. Not that long ago Don audited my class to make sure We Love DC can try to enjoy a long and lawsuit free existence. Ever since he’s been contacting me as his “expert” on speech law. (Note to self: update email filters)

This event was no exception and we exchanged a few emails about the details of the Oberwetter case and this more recent event. While I can assure you that nothing would make me happier than to show Mr. Whiteside up both publicly and violently, I have to say that I can’t. We’re in total agreement here on two counts: (a) it’s unfortunate that (b) the Court of Appeals probably got this right.

How can that be when anyone’s free to walk into the memorial any time of night or day? How do two people slightly left of Marx on speech rights come to a conclusion like that one? Well, let’s discuss.

Pepco Outage continues into 3rd Day

‘P.E.P.Co’

The power outage in the business and residential district just north of Union Station that is affecting 1,800 customers. It’s also affecting half a dozen or more DC Government agencies that make their homes in the office towers there.  The outage was caused by an “Underground Cable Fault,” which is Pepco’s fancy talk for “it done blowed up.”  The underground power cable runs overheated, which resulted in a failure of the system.  Because those lines are underground, it’s a bit of a bear to service.

Now, why it’s taken three days, well, that’s all on Pepco.  As Councilmember Yvette Alexander tweeted, starting next fiscal year, Pepco will be on the hook for $100,000 in fines for each “unreliable incident.”  It’s not exactly clear what that means yet, but this certainly sounds like it might be an unreliable incident.

Power’s expected back on at noon, but if you’re without power and getting hot today, there are cooling centers open.  Also, if you’re wondering which agencies are closed, there’s a list of that, too.

While a lot of us were off at the beach, visiting family, or at weddings this Memorial Day Weekend, Shea “DJ ReOffender” Mulcahy was busy turning a hobby into a professional freelance career.

ReOffender is a self-proclaimed “Man of Music.” When he’s not at his day job, he finds himself singing or at the keyboard writing songs. And him and his iPod? Well forget about it! If you saw him, you’d think they were permanently attached.

“Basically, music is my life. I love that anybody could express themselves through music,” he said. That’s what got him hooked on learning to DJ. Continue reading

First Look: Luke’s Lobster

Luke’s Lobster isn’t a big space, and you could almost walk by it…that is if
it weren’t for the long line stretching out the door during lunch. The crustacean place is really all you would expect and more.

A New York import, Luke’s Lobster has done so well in its openening week that it already ran out of crab, but will be getting a delivery ASAP (so maybe by the time you read this Wednesday). You obviously can’t leave Luke’s without trying the famous lobster roll, but if you are hungry or with a friend, I would suggest going for the Taste of Maine. Logistically you place your order, get a ticket, wait and then pick it up from the Pick Up window.

Comedy in DC: Eli Sairs

Eli Sairs headshot

I spent last a nice weekend afternoon getting to know Eli Sairs who is a former DC comic and the producer of the upcoming 3 Chords Comedy Show that’s happening at the Velvet Lounge on June 3. We had a fun chat over at the Tastee Diner in Silver Spring. I got to say that that diner has what I call “Good Joo-Joo.” I trust a place has good food if they still have the same furniture from twenty years ago. It says to me, “Hey, I don’t have to change, because I’m fine the way I am.” An example of “Bad Joo Joo” is this other place I went to the day before that had over priced Mexican food. The furniture was modern and the place looked fancy; however, the food was not given as much care as the decorating. My stomach was killing me during our conversation. Anyway, I’m going to shut up now and let’s learn about Eli. Continue reading

Silverdocs 2011 Packed With Award Season Hopefuls

Summertime means movies, typically of the blockbuster variety. However it’s not all about scene-by-scene rehashes or nuptial catfights. June also marks the return of AFI-Discovery Channel’s annual Silverdocs Documentary Festival. I’ve had the chance to cover the festival in the past and it’s a great experience for cinephiles to see some great stories unfold without having to travel to Cannes, Tribeca, or Austin.

The slate of films for the 2011 festival has already been announced and as an avid Oscar Watcher, I’m especially excited to see several early Academy Awards frontrunners among the list.

Here’s what I’m looking forward to at this year’s Silverdocs.

Nats stomp Phils, 10-2

Marquis hurls a Gem

It’s been a hard season, so far, but nights like Tuesday night are the refuge of the hard-luck fan.

I could take no joy in the lead that the Nationals amassed over the Phillies in the third inning. Given the Nationals’ ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this season, especially over the last few weeks, it was a tough night to watch the team, despite the 10-2 win they amassed. Between the heat, the roving packs of Philly fans, and the lead-but-not-a-lead, this was definitely a night where I popped an extra omeprazole with my half smoke.

We Love Arts: Venus in Fur

Christian Conn and Erica Sullivan in Venus in Fur, directed by David Muse at the Studio Theatre. Photo credit: Scott Suchman.

The night I saw Venus in Fur, I had strange dreams. Given that the play is inspired by the infamous 1870’s novel that gave birth to the term sado-masochism, I’ll forgive you if your first thought was that my dreams were a dizzying melange of whips, dog collars and PVC boots. After all, Studio Theatre’s press teaser quotes the New York Times as saying this is “90 minutes of good, kinky fun.” However, David Ives’ remarkable play is more than a romp through a fetish wonderland. In its fast burning build-up to the final electrifying minute, it’s the embodiment of that haunting line from Yeats, about a “terrible beauty” being born.

Ok, there’s also whips, dog collars and PVC boots. But every successful seduction needs a hook, right?

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s book Venus in Furs supposes that behind every fetish there’s an “innocent incident,” something almost innocuous in the past that marked us on a primal level. For his protagonist, Severin Kushemski, it’s his childhood punishment by an imperious aunt as he writhes under her whip on her cast-off fur cape. As an adult, he will seek subjugation at the hands of his lover, Vanda Dunayev. We don’t know what the “innocent incident” is that drives David Ives’ protagonist, a playwright directing his own adaptation of Sacher-Masoch’s novel, but we know from the first minute that he’s an arrogant misogynist just begging for a beating. Something is slouching towards his Bethlehem, all right, coming to take vengeance, but he’s oblivious to the danger until it’s too late.

At the end of a long day of auditioning to cast his own adaptation of Venus in Furs, Thomas (Christian Conn) is unloading his frustration over the phone about the paucity of truly sensual, powerful women to play his Vanda. It’s the kind of tirade an old-school Hollywood producer might have made, peppered with insulting assumptions made all the more comical by the fact that the shabby surroundings clearly indicate he’s not a power player. Describing strings of annoying actresses dressed as hookers, dragging bags of props, with voices that sound like “six-year-olds on helium,” he’s surprised when one last supplicant (Erica Sullivan) barges in from the rain with an obscenity-laced plea for an audition.

She’s exactly everything he’s just described. But he’s too blind to see the warning in that eerie similarity. And so begins a riveting game of domination and submission. By the end, Ives reveals in a shocking moment of divine retribution that the dice were loaded all along. Continue reading

The NHL’s Newest Southeast Division City: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

We discussed this in depth (and what it could mean for the Caps) a few weeks back, but the Atlanta Thrashers are officially on their way to Winnipeg. It sounds like in the first season, the team-we’ll-all-want-to-call-the-Jets-no-matter-what-they-get-called will still play in the Southeast Division (even if they are in Western Canadia) before conference and division realignment takes shape a year later – with Columbus, Nashville and Detroit as your clubhouse leaders for a move to the East.

What will this mean for the Caps next season? Three road games for a divisional rival that’s 1,233 miles (1,984 km for our Canadian readers) away.

Funny side note: The announcement came at around noon this morning. As of 11 a.m., though, the Thrashers were still selling season tickets. Might want to refund those.

Summer Fun :)....Hot Holiday Weekend For D.C., Scorching Heat By Tuesday
‘Summer Fun’ by Dan Dan the Binary Man

With the passing of Memorial Day comes the unofficial start of summer, and Dan Dan the Binary Man loses us into a child’s view of summer. The silhouettes give anonymity to the tikes and provide a wonderful compositional tool for black and white photography, as does the water in the middle, a natural reflector of light. The definition of the children’s forms is pronounced by the obscured figures in the right background, blending into day’s darkness and the surrounding landscape. The photo is a portrait of the innocence and adventure of youth and leaves us pondering: what is the child at the left looking at? His mother calling to him? Barking dogs? Sirens?

Catch a Striped Bass in Maryland, Win $10,000

‘Striped Bass Fishing Maryland’
courtesy of ‘HuntFishGuide’

Maryland’s Department of Fisheries released a number of tagged striped bass this weekend that are eligible for various bounties, starting at $500 per tagged fish.  One fished, nicknamed Diamond Jim (for Diamond Jim Brady, no not that Jim Brady, the other Jim Brady) is worth $10,000 to the lucky angler who brings him in.

Choosing the best bass fishing rod is a lot like going on a blind date. You can read reviews, listen to your buddies, and even hold it in your hands in the store but you never know what to expect until you show up and try it on the water. So, how do you make that decision? You’ve got a few different choices. One you could go to your local pro shop and play Russian Roulette with the salesman who hasn’t likely picked up a rod once in his life – or, you could let an expert offer you our honest opinions such as the best saltwater spinning reel under 100 based on experience, research, and years of trial and error.

The Striped Bass (aka Rockfish), in addition to being tasty in a lemon butter sauce, is the state fish of Maryland.  You can fish for them all through the Chesapeake Bay and out into the Atlantic.  You can get an annual fishing license through the state for $15 if you’re a Maryland resident, or $22.50 if you’re not. If you just want a week’s worth of fishing, that’s $6 or $12.  if you’re a Virginia resident with a saltwater fishing license, Maryland offers reciprocity, which means you don’t need to pay twice.
