Metro Announces Two Safety Programs

Metro this morning announced two safety programs now approved by the board: rollback protection on 5000-series cars, and door control unit repairs to 500+ cars. The former repairs should be done by this summer, but the latter will take until Spring of 2011.

Interestingly, the repairs to the DCUs suggest that it may be awhile longer until we’re back on Automated Train Operations (ATO): “Metro will repair door control units on 546 rail cars, which will enhance passenger safety once Metro resumes automatic train operations”. That suggests they’re either going to wait until we’re back on ATO to do the repairs, or that the repairs can’t be started until we’re back on ATO. Metro has given no public timeline for the return to ATO and has refused all inquiries related to that subject. Dave Stroup from Why I Hate DC yesterday called for a return to ATO sooner rather than later, suggesting that Metro’s current safety regime is more like security theater than actual security. I’m inclined to agree that if Metro wants to justify their fare hike proposals, they’re going to have to return service to something approximating normal more quickly than they had planned.

The Cigarette Tax That Didn’t Work

‘This Is Gonna Kill Me (Again)’

Buried in today’s paper was the report by Natwar Gandhi that said the District’s increase in per-pack cigarette taxes was a dismal failure, causing DC smokers to head to MD and Organic CBD Nugs’ CBD Isolate store for their nic fix, and it ended up costing DC revenue.  Of course, since political theatre is always farce, let’s take a look at the new Tobacco-Free Kids report, which suggests that DC could raise another $6.8M just by raising the cigarette tax another dollar.

Now, I’m no math whiz, but it sounds like a $0.50 hike cost the city money, and now you’re trying to tell me that we could make more money only if we taxed them even more? Sorry, Charlie, that don’t fly with me.  I think the only way that would work is if all the surrounding states were to increase taxes at the same time, an outcome that is so unlikely, the DC Lottery should consider that as a new game on which to bet.

Nice job, Tobacco-Free Kids.  Apparently you’re not much for the mathematics here.

Local Blogger Fired For Her Blog

Local blogger Meg of 2birds1blog was this morning dismissed from her workplace for her blog, in which she kept her identity somewhat concealed, and her employer’s identity a mystery.  Worse than that, and the worst nightmare of pretty much every blogger is that they’re threatening her with a defamation lawsuit.  What a buzzkill.  Anyhow, Meg is one of our favorites around these parts and finding out she’s getting Dooced is pretty much unacceptable to us.

Meg’s likely to need a good lawyer in the coming months who’s willing to act on her behalf while these still-as-of-yet-unnamed employers decide to be foolish jerks and threaten her with defamation suits.  If you know anyone who fits the bill, make yourself known in the comments and we’ll try to help you out.  While we’re not lawyers here at We Love DC, and this next comment shouldn’t be construed as legal advice, posts like this one make me think she might have a good sexual harassment countersuit. Can you help?

While we’re on the subject, it’d be good for everyone both reading this blog, and especially so if they write one, to brush up on your rights at work. It’s not as clear a line as you’d think.

WMATA, Google Close to a Deal for Google Transit Info

For the last couple years, DC’s been a bit behind the times technologically when it came to public transportation participation in online transit services like NextBus and Google Maps for Transit, but it seems that’s about to come to an end, as Greater Greater Washington is reporting that WMATA and Google are now talking legal language of the deal, which is a major victory for the region.  DDOT announced earlier this week that the Circulator would appear in Google Transit this week, and Arlington is piggybacking on the announcement as well, to add ART buses to the system.

This is just about the best news that Metro’s seen in some time, and it’s a boon for riders who want to work on new ways to get a more efficient route through the system and don’t want to rely on the buggy Ride Guide on WMATA’s site.  Bring on the Future!  Er.  The Present.

His smiling face is certainly one you remember, and as of Friday night late, you may have to see it somewhere else.  Longtime NBC4 Weatherman Bob Ryan is leaving NBC4 for greener pastures.  It’s not clear if he’s headed to WJLA as was previously guessed, but it was clear he wasn’t willing to take the paycut that NBC4 wanted him to take.  Good on ya, Bob, and you’re better without those NBC jerks.  Besides, they tape delay the Olympics, how long before they do that with the weather?

If you thought getting tickets to last year’s White House Easter Egg Roll was hard, then imagine what’s going to happen with the addition of a performance by the cast of Fox’s Glee.

Yup, that’s right. They’ll be appearing and performing at the April 5 event, so you should start lining up for tickets today.

Apparently, Michelle, Malia and Sasha are among the shows 2038475 million fans and are super pumped. Wonder if Bo is into Glee.

It’s not often you find someone who makes the chilly Michelle Rhee look warm and fuzzy by comparison, but meet Central Falls, RI’s Dr. Gallo.  As part of a running dispute with the teachers and administrators at Central Falls’ high school, today she fired each and every teacher and administrator there, citing poor performance, significant social mismatch, and a 48% graduation rate.  Sadly, 48% is just about average in DC.  So.  Fire ’em all?

Ever been bitten by the art bug? Need a way to scratch that itch? The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is starting a new one hour television show called Art(202) and they need your help!

Aid in the effort of DC arts promotion  by submitting a video feature idea to the commission for airtime. What are they looking for? Info-mercials about your respective arts organizations, artistic interpretations of any of your work, documentaries, animations, music videos, slides of visual art, and anything else your creative brain can throw together.

All you have to do is make sure your content is 100% DC related.

If you plan on submitting an idea for a feature to run on Art(202) there are a few guidelines you’re going to have to follow. They include: making sure your video is between 30 seconds to 5 minutes long, is burned to a data DVD with either a quick time or .mov, a link for online screening purposes (if available), all the contact information of the producer & organization being promoted, and a video release form.

Art(202) will be airing on Friday nights at 9 p.m. and Saturday nights at 11 p.m. on the Mayor’s Network (Channel 16).

The Road To Legalization: Will Congress Lay Down The Law?

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

The legalization of medical marijuana in DC continues to be an issue for those supporting the cause. According to the Washington Post, “Nine out of 13 council members are co-sponsoring the bill that would make the city the 15th jurisdiction in the country to offer the option to the chronically ill.”

There are two problems that need to find resolution before the District can take the fight for medical marijuana any further — logistics and Congress.

The amendment to Initiative 59 states that the legalization of medical marijuana in DC would require five dispensaries city-wide. Each dispensary would supply a months worth of marijuana to registered patients as prescribed by their respective physicians and insurance for dispensaries will also be made available.

But — no matter the logistical dilemmas or support weighing in on both the pro and con side of the bill — Congress will have the final word on the matter. WaPo says that advocates appear to be the most concerned about getting the bill passed and untouched by Congress.

This wouldn’t be the first time Congress put their foot down. Back in 1998, voters approved the initiative. It was Congress who blocked it.

Wemple Departing City Paper for New Local Venture

Congratulations to Erik Wemple, current editor of the City Paper, who will be heading up the new local DC media outlet owned by the folks at Politico.com.  Wemple has been at the City Paper since 2002, and has lead the paper through it’s hardest time to date.  Between the sale to Creative Loafing, and their eventual bankruptcy, the City Paper has remained an interesting part of DC’s media culture.  It’s hard to see what the road for the City Paper will be without Wemple, nor entirely what niche the new Albritton-backed as-of-yet-unnamed venture will fill.  DC already has six group-run high-quality hyper-local blogs (DCist, We Love DC, BYT, PoP, Famous DC, and one other), so it’s hard to see what potential role another outlet might have, but it will be fascinating to watch.

Two Big Hearings Today

‘Public hearing, 1957’

Two big hearings going on today.  First, we’ve got the first of three days worth of hearings related to this summer’s Metro accident that claimed 9 lives and injured 80.  Day one is all testimony from WMATA.  NTSB will be streaming these hearings live over the web, so you can jeer and throw popcorn at the appropriate moments.  We’ll have a summary up later, fret not.

The second is a bit more interesting.  Ten years ago, Washington DC took a vote and decided that the usage of marijuana for medicinal purposes was a perfectly legitimate use. Today, the Council listens to testimony regarding the use of marijuana for medical purposes, and how to properly control who has access, and from where it’s dispensed.  It’s not really clear how the city would handle dispensaries, in terms of locating them, or in terms of procedural identification of eligible patients.  Those details are coming, and they’re part of the hearing process, so stay tuned.

Big day for DC in the governmental processes that make this place so unlike any other.

Fares to Rise Again

‘Newspapers Newspapers Newspapers’

Kytja Weir from the Examiner has had a look at the FY2011 WMATA budget, and get ready to bend over, because here it comes again. Look for an increase up to $2.00 for peak rail fare minimums, with the new max at $5.10. There’s also a peak-of-the-peak period during the height of rush hour (7-8:30a and 4:30-6p) which will increase the peak fare by a dime each direction. Metrobus fares face a hike of a quarter each direction. Taking the shuttle to Dulles or BWI? That’ll be $6 instead of $3.10.

The increases are draconian, and will likely affect the commuting rider to the tune of $154 a year, with an additional $110 if they add bus legs each direction. Even worse? With these increases, Metro still has another $40M to make up in shortfall. No idea where that’s going to come from, but I’m hoping it’s not the ridership’s pockets. I suspect that’s a well they’ve gone to too much.

WMATA + FEMA = OK?

With the word out that Metro is short another $18M due to lost fares and extra expenses during the Snopocalypse and Snowmaggeddon, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton has requested some additional funds from FEMA to offset the loss.  Her letter to FEMA director Craig Fugate highlights unique challenges to Metro, including its status as a multi-state agency.  She wrote, “I understand that if the president declares Major Disasters or Emergencies that Metro likely will receive assistance separately through each of the states in which they operate.   However, considering how unusual it is to be faced with a tri-state local entity under the Stafford Act, I would ask that FEMA provide the greatest flexibility in its administrative requirements so as not to unnecessarily add to the operational burdens that Metro faces.”

It would be nice to see FEMA come through with some emergency funding for our beleaguered transit agency, especially with WMATA facing a $189M shortfall for next year, with likely service cuts on the block.  Isn’t a great time to ride Metro?

Wizards Conducting Fire Sale

‘fire sale’
courtesy of ‘it290’

The shouts from the Phone Booth tonight went something like, “Everything must go! No players reserved! WE WILL NOT BE UNDERSOLD!” and that resulted in the departure today of Antawn Jamison, as he was traded to the Cavaliers for Zydrunas Ilgauskas (whose name is just as fun to say as it is to spell!) and a first round draft pick.

That adds to the list of 2009/2010 Wizards who are no longer Wizards: Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood, Drew Gooden (even if he stayed just 3 days), and DeShawn Stevenson. If you add in Gilbert Arenas, who I think has seen last time in a Wizards uniforms, then you’ve got three of their five opening day starters who are gone, and several more reserves.

The addition of Ilgauskas as a big man in the middle for the Wizards is great, it’s just that there’s hardly anyone to throw the ball to at this point. You could say that the team has all the chemistry of an elementary school science textbook right now, and you’d probably be right. It’s going to be a rough, rough rest of the season for the Wiz.

Yelp wants you to get plastered. Well, okay, maybe not plastered, but they do want you to spend some time in March tipping back some cocktails. They’re sponsoring a week of great cocktails here in DC at area outfits like Co Co. Sala, Cedar, PS 7, Russia House and Urbana, and of course our favorite Wisdom (seriously, come have drinks with us next Tuesday, you won’t regret it, and the cost of your first drink is in the ticket!)

The drinks go on sale on the 1st of March and last through the 7th, location depending. Check the list to see if your favorite watering hole is doing something as part of the event.

We’re big fans of the folks over at Photowalk DC and this Sunday, they’re doing a great photowalk at National Archives and the Chinatown New Years Parade. They’ve got things scheduled out pretty well, so if you can’t make the whole thing, you can come out for part of it, and meet up with them according to the schedule. Get out with your camera, be it a point and shoot or the fanciest of SLRs, it’s worth it to go meet other shooters in your town.

Nats Grab Wang

It’s official, Chien-Ming Wang is now a Washington National. He’ll join the staff for Spring Training when pitchers and catchers report later this week. Wang is coming off two straight injury years where he had limited playing time, first in 2008 he missed half a season with a foot injury, and in 2009, he had arthroscopic surgery causing him to miss the Yankees’ World Series Run.

If you go further back in his career, though, he was 38-13 in 2006-7 with a 3.67 ERA. The Nats are taking a flyer on Wang here, whose post-injury career has been sketchier than a freshman art student’s notebook. They’re trusting that the Nats improved defense will back up a now-fully-recovered Wang.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but are guessed to be between $2M and 3M. Wang’s Lifetime record is 55-26 with a 4.16 ERA. If he’s close to that sort of statistic in DC, he’ll do just fine.

Marion Barry Benefitted from City Contract with Mistress, Report Says

In a report delivered before the City Council, Marion Barry was implicated in personally benefitting from the city contract made with his then-mistress Donna Watts-Brighthaupt, the Post reported today. (see, WaPo, we don’t see the problem in linking to you, perhaps you could repay the favor when you cite us, but don’t name us?)

The audit released to the council today by special counsel Bob Bennett suggests that Hizzoner received direct financial benefit from the contract with Watts-Brighthaupt, and that it was just a part of $47M that was given to non-profits, both above board and below, during the last year. It’s been suggested that Barry face criminal prosecution for his actions, and the AG’s office US Attorney’s office has been contacted regarding prosecution.

As always, Marion Barry flaunts DC laws and DC rules to award funds to his cronies, all with the support of his constituency. Way to go, Ward 8. Way to go.

Unless you paid special attention to this weekend’s Washington Post magazine, you probably missed the opening of the 2010 Peeps Diorama Contest. This will be the contest’s 4th year, and I can’t wait to see all of this year’s entries.

If you’re interested in entering, the first step is to brainstorm ideas and come up with a historic, current, or future occurrence and/or a pop culture related concept. You know an idea that is comprehensible by more than just you and your tight knit group of friends.

Then construct your diorama, keeping to the shoebox sized regulations, snap two high-resolution JPEG photos and send them to peeps@washpost.com by Monday, March 1, at 11:59 p.m. Continue reading
